Vivaśa means helpless on account of much practice.
This is confirmed in the Brahma-vaivarta: bodily practice becomes verbal practice, and verbal practice becomes mental practice; and from mental practice one is released even helplessly, for liberation is not accepted in any other way.
Describing His power, they reveal their eagerness to hear His fame, in the three verses beginning āpannaḥ ("one fallen").
Āpannaḥ means one who has attained or fallen into saṁsṛti. Such a one, even though helpless (vivaśaḥ), chants (gṛṇan); and tataḥ means "from that saṁsṛti."
The reason given here is that even fear itself fears that name.
Moreover, the sages (munayaḥ) are those for whom His feet are the shelter and for whom perfect peace (praśama) is the path or refuge; when approached, served merely by their presence, they purify at once. The Svardhunī is the Gaṅgā; its waters issue from His feet but do not remain there, and so, though they purify by that connection, they purify only through repeated service, not immediately. This states the superiority of the sages.
His fame (yaśaḥ) is the fame of Him whose deeds are praiseworthy and lauded by sacred verses; it removes the impurity of Kali and pacifies the suffering of saṁsāra.
The Kaivalya-dīpikā, on the verse beginning āpannaḥ, glosses gṛṇan as chanting or praising; cites Mukunda-phala 8.26, "these verses are indeed spoken by one eager to hear"; takes ślokaḥ in the sense of fame; and glosses īḍyam as praiseworthy.
Again citing Mukunda-phala (8.6), Sanātana Gosvāmī in Hari-bhakti-vilāsa 11.425 takes saṁsṛtim āpannaḥ to mean one who has reached saṁsṛti: even while helpless, simply by chanting he is at once freed from that saṁsṛti, and thus living liberation (jīvan-mukti) is stated. The reason given here is that fear itself fears that name.
Vivaśaḥ means even while especially dependent and not self-controlled.
The name is that of Śrī Kṛṣṇa; since He is the source of all avatāras, the names of the avatāras too culminate in Him alone. Therefore, even apart from Śrī Kṛṣṇa directly, another mode of the activity of those names is heard of in the Śrī Viṣṇu Purāṇa, in the prose passage (4.15.7): "There arose the causes of all the names of Bhagavān." This should be understood as referring to names such as Vāsudeva, Dāmodara, Govinda, and Keśava.
(Śrī Kṛṣṇa-sandarbha 66) The feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa are the complete shelter of those sages; therefore they are praśamāyanāḥ. Śama is the state of intelligence fixed on Bhagavān; by Śrī Bhagavān's own words, "śama is the mind's being fixed on Me" (Bhāgavata 11.19.36), that alone is the exalted śama, praśama. The meaning is that, being related to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the directly complete Bhagavān, their hearts are drawn by Śrī Kṛṣṇa's līlā. The sages (munayaḥ) are Śrī Śukadeva and others. They purify at once, cleansing one of sins together with their latent impressions.
The Svardhunī is the Gaṅgā, and its waters are as described: "That stainless Lord, Janārdana, whose nature is consciousness, is Himself the water of the Gaṅgā in liquid form; of this there is no doubt."
Although the water is itself of such a nature, having issued directly from Śrī Vāmana-deva's foot it purifies in that way only by direct, habitual service, not by mere proximity. Since even by direct service it does not purify immediately, this shows the excellence of those sheltered by Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and thereby His own excellence.
In the same way the greater power of His fame is described further on: "O king, what appeared among the Yadus made the heavenly river, the washing of His feet, into a lesser tīrtha." The commentary on this says: previously the heavenly river alone was held to be the greatest tīrtha of all, but now the tīrtha that appeared among the Yadus, namely Śrī Kṛṣṇa's fame, made that tīrtha which is the heavenly river and the washing of His feet seem small.
(Śrī Kṛṣṇa-sandarbha 67) He makes clear the agreement of this very Tenth Canto verse with the verse beginning ko vā. Even one desiring purification should hear it, because it removes even the impurity of Kali-yuga. (Śrī Kṛṣṇa-sandarbha 68)
Tataḥ means "from that saṁsṛti": by the three words "terrible" (ghorām), "helpless" (vivaśaḥ), and "at once" (sadyaḥ), persons such as Ajāmila are indicated. Because of even one name, fear itself, like Bhagavān Himself, fears the primal fear, Mahākāla; what then of death and Yama, and still more of the servants of Yama? Such is the import.
It should be explained thus: those who abide simply by taking shelter of His feet purify at once, by mere remembrance, cleansing the impurities of ignorance — how much more when they are seen, touched, or served — as in the verse, "By the remembrance of such persons, people's homes are indeed purified at once; what then by seeing them, touching them, washing their feet, offering them seats, and the like?" For the same meaning is obtained from this very statement.
In the phrase "the waters of the heavenly Gaṅgā," it should likewise be understood that they have been carried far away from her source — otherwise it would contradict the statement, "Liberation comes simply by seeing you; I do not know the fruit born of bathing." Moreover, liberation comes merely by seeing the heavenly Gaṅgā and even by remembering sādhus; even so, the superiority of the sādhus should be understood. Thus those waters, having issued from His feet and purifying through that connection, purify when touched from above.
The particle nu is used in the sense of an option. "By service, such as bowing," or "when honored" — the compound svardhuny-āpaḥ takes the sense of a final compound formation, in an ārṣa (archaic Vedic) usage.
Śuddha means the joy of the self, because it was said earlier, "by which the self becomes fully pleased." Yaśaḥ means His fame, such as conquering Brahmā, Rudra, and Indra, and especially the rāsa-krīḍā, which is unique here. This covers verses 14–16.
A person fallen into terrible saṁsṛti, and therefore helpless like Ajāmila, who chants His name and qualities, is at once freed from that saṁsṛti; for if Time, fear itself, fears even a single name, what then of Yama, who is Time's manifestation, or of Yama's servant?
In the passage beginning yat: the saints, being sheltered at His feet, purify at once by mere remembrance, cleansing one of the mud of ignorance — as in "by the remembrance of such persons, people's homes are purified at once" — how much more, then, when they are approached and served? The waters of the heavenly Gaṅgā, by contrast, when carried far away, purify only by repeated service; and no suffix appears here because the rule for final compounds is not invariable.
When seen and entered for bathing, those waters may grant liberation and an excess of bliss, for it is said, "Liberation comes simply by seeing Him; I do not know the fruit born of bathing." The waters issued from His feet and purify by repeated service and the like; but the saints are sheltered at His feet, and therefore, by the word "at once," their superiority over those waters is shown.
They are those whose shelter is such a path, because from it comes exalted śama, defined as having intelligence fixed on Bhagavān; for He has said, "Śama is the mind's being fixed on Me."
In the verse beginning ko vā: this is the fame, in the form of His celebrated virtues, of that Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa whose deeds are praised by holy persons such as Nārada — His childhood acts such as freeing Pūtanā, His boyhood acts such as conquering Indra, and His youthful acts such as the rāsa sports. Śuddhi-kāmaḥ means one who desires the removal of ignorance.
