Another question now begins, with the words "O Sūta, you know," and it continues for five verses.
'सूत जानासि' से आरम्भ होकर पाँच श्लोकों तक दूसरा प्रश्न है।
The words "bhadraṁ te" are a blessing spoken out of eagerness. Because a fuller blessing would interrupt the narration of Viṣṇu's deeds, it is expressed only briefly.
'भद्रं ते' इस पद में उत्सुकता से दिया हुआ आशीर्वाद है। यदि आशीर्वाद को विस्तार से कहा जाए तो विष्णु-कथा में विघ्न हो; इसलिए उसे संक्षेप में ही कहा गया है।
For indeed, as it is said, that is loss, that is a great breach, that is delusion, and that is confusion—if one does not think of Vāsudeva even for a moment or an instant.
क्योंकि वास्तव में वही हानि है, वही बड़ा छिद्र है, वही मोह है और वही भ्रम है—जब कोई एक मुहूर्त या एक क्षण भी वासुदेव का चिन्तन नहीं करता।
Bhagavān is one possessed of unsurpassed sovereignty and the other such qualities. The Sātvatas are the devotees for whom the Lord—indicated by the word sat, the very embodiment of sattva—is known as the object of worship.
'भगवान्' वे हैं जिनमें अनुत्तम ऐश्वर्य आदि गुण हों। 'सात्वत' में 'सत्' शब्द से सत्त्वमूर्ति भगवान् का ग्रहण होता है; अतः सात्वत वे भक्त हैं जिनके लिए वह सत्त्वमूर्ति भगवान् उपास्य रूप से जाने जाते हैं।
Here the affix is used in the reflexive sense, as in words like rākṣasa and vāyasa, and its omission is an accepted archaic usage. In this way the form sātvanta—that is, Sātvata—is obtained.
यहाँ प्रत्यय स्वार्थ में है, जैसे 'राक्षस', 'वायस' आदि शब्दों में; और उसका श्रवण न होना, अर्थात् उसका लोप, आर्ष-प्रयोग माना गया है। इस प्रकार 'सात्वत' रूप सिद्ध होता है।
Their pati is their protector. He was born from Devakī, the wife of Vasudeva, in order to accomplish a particular purpose of His own.
उनके 'पति' अर्थात् पालक। वे वसुदेव की पत्नी देवकी में अपनी किसी विशेष इच्छा की पूर्ति के लिए प्रकट हुए।
The section beginning "O Sūta" consists of nine statements. Although there are many avatāras and many sources of avatāras, right at the opening of this Mahāpurāṇa Śaunaka and the others show that their sole focus is Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Earlier they had asked in a general way about the supreme good, the essence of all scripture, and that which brings peace to the self; now they turn toward this specific topic with the words "O Sūta."
The words "bhadraṁ te" are a blessing born from the eagerness that accompanies their question about Śrī Kṛṣṇa's pastimes.
'भद्रं ते' इस पद में श्रीकृष्ण-लीला के प्रश्न के साथ ही उत्पन्न उत्सुकता से दिया हुआ आशीर्वाद है।
Bhagavān is the original source of all avatāras, endowed with complete sovereignty and all the other opulences. Sātvatām, with the elision of the consonant, is an archaic form meaning "of the Yādavas." And He became visible to the world.
'भगवान्' स्वयं अवतारी, सम्पूर्ण ऐश्वर्य आदि से युक्त हैं। 'सात्वताम्' में नुड् का अभाव आर्ष-प्रयोग है; इसका अर्थ है—यादवों के। वे जगत् के देखने योग्य रूप में प्रकट हुए।
This is drawn from Śrī Kṛṣṇa-sandarbha 64.
[श्रीकृष्ण-संदर्भ ६४]
To make them speak further on the essence of all practice—which is the hearing and chanting of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's glories—they ask again, with the words "O Sūta."
उस साधन-सार को, जो श्रीकृष्ण-यश के श्रवण-कीर्तन आदि में है, और अधिक कहलवाने के लिए वे फिर पूछते हैं—'हे सूत!'
The words "bhadraṁ te" are a blessing spoken out of eagerness.
'भद्रं ते' इस पद में उत्सुकता से दिया हुआ आशीर्वाद है।
The Sātvatas are those for whom Viṣṇu—in whose opulence the saints and devotees themselves abide—is the one to be worshiped; they are the Vaiṣṇavas, and He is their pati, their protector.
वे जिनके लिए विष्णु—जिनकी विभूति में सन्त और भक्त भी स्थित हैं—उपास्य हैं, वे 'सात्वत' कहलाते हैं। सात्वत अर्थात् वैष्णव; और वे उनके स्वामी हैं।
The absence of the consonant here is an accepted archaic usage.
नुड् का अभाव आर्ष-प्रयोग है।
Or else: sati may be taken in the sense of happiness, and by the grammatical rule governing the causative derivation from the root su, the form may be derived in that way. On this reading the meaning is that the devotees are those for whom the Supreme Self exists as the object of service, and He is their lord.
अथवा, 'साति' का अर्थ सुख है, और उस व्याकरण-विधि से यह रूप बनता है। तब अर्थ यह होगा कि जिनके लिए परमात्मा सेवा के विषय रूप से स्थित हैं, वे भक्त 'सात्वत' हैं, और वे उनके स्वामी हैं।
He was born from Vasudeva, in Devakī his wife, in order to accomplish His purpose.
वे वसुदेव की पत्नी देवकी में अपनी इच्छा की पूर्ति के लिए प्रकट हुए।
And that purpose was truly just the manifesting of His own glory, and not in reality the removing of the earth's burden and the like.
और वास्तव में उनकी वह इच्छा अपने ही यश का प्रकाश करना थी, केवल पृथ्वी का भार उतारना आदि नहीं।
That essence is the hearing, chanting, and the like that concern Śrī Kṛṣṇa; therefore he says, "O Sūta."
वह सार श्रीकृष्ण-विषयक श्रवण, कीर्तन आदि ही है; इसलिए वे कहते हैं—'हे सूत'।
The words "bhadraṁ te" are a blessing arising from eagerness.
'भद्रं ते' इस पद में उत्सुकता से दिया हुआ आशीर्वाद है।
As for "of the Sātvatas": if sati is taken in the sense of happiness, then by the grammatical derivation the meaning is that their happiness is Vāsudeva. Thus the word refers to the devotees—those for whom He exists as the object of worship—and He is their pati, born to accomplish His purpose.
'सात्वताम्' का अर्थ यह है कि यदि 'साति' का अर्थ सुख लिया जाए, तो व्याकरण-विधि के अनुसार जिनका सुख वासुदेव हैं वे भक्त हैं, और वे उनके स्वामी हैं।
