By another method, to remove the doubt about the puruṣārtha, there is also a narrative (ākhyāyikā) given in the Pādma:
एक अन्य प्रकार से, पुरुषार्थ-सम्बन्धी शंका की निवृत्ति के लिए, पाद्म में भी एक आख्यायिका है—
Narratives (ākhyāyikā) are set forth in all the Vedas, in every way; they illumine the purport for the great ones in every place. "There is no attainment of the puruṣārtha apart from the meaning already stated"—thus, O great king, the narratives serve for illumination and for the increase of faith.
Thus, by these three verses, having first remembered the particular chosen deity, and having made the hearers favorably disposed toward the śāstra he is about to begin—through the distinction of its subject, purpose, and the rest, and through its being easy to practice—he now begins the śāstra in the verse "naimiśe."
इस प्रकार, इन तीन श्लोकों के द्वारा, विशिष्ट इष्टदेवता के अनुस्मरण के साथ, जिस शास्त्र का आरम्भ करना अभीष्ट है उसके विषय, प्रयोजन आदि की विशिष्टता से तथा सुखपूर्वक सेवनीय होने से श्रोताओं को अभिमुख करके, वह 'नैमिशे' इस श्लोक से शास्त्र का आरम्भ करते हैं।
The place where the rim (nemi) of the mind-made wheel released by Brahmā wears away and becomes blunted is nemiśa; and nemiśa itself is naimiśa. So the Vāyavīya states: "This mind-made wheel, created by me, is released; the place where its rim wears away—that region is auspicious for austerity." Having spoken thus, having created a mind-made wheel resembling the sun, and having bowed down to Mahādeva, the Grandsire released it. The most delighted brāhmaṇas too, having bowed to the Lord of the worlds, went to the place where the rim of that wheel wore away; on that account that forest became renowned as Naimiśa, honored by the sages. In the alternative reading "naimiṣa," what is stated in the Varāha-purāṇa should be consulted: namely the Lord's words to the ṛṣi Gauramukha—"Having done thus, the Lord then said to the sage Gauramukha: 'In an instant (nimiṣa) this dānava Vala has been slain. Thereafter this forest will become known as Naimiṣāraṇya, truly fitting to its meaning, a distinguishing mark for the brāhmaṇas.'"
Animiṣa is Śrī Viṣṇu, because His seeing is never interrupted; the verse refers to His field. And so right here there is the statement of Śaunaka and the others: "in this Vaiṣṇava field, we…"
अनिमिष श्री विष्णु हैं, क्योंकि उनकी दृष्टि कभी लुप्त नहीं होती; 'तस्य क्षेत्रे' अर्थात् उनके क्षेत्र में। और इसी विषय में यहीं शौनक आदि का वचन है: 'इस वैष्णव क्षेत्र में, हम…'
Hari is svargya because He is sung in svar, that is, in heaven. That very world is the dwelling-place of the devotees; so the phrase "to that" means: for the attaining of that.
स्वर् अर्थात् स्वर्ग में जिनका गान होता है—इस प्रकार हरि स्वर्ग्य हैं; और वही लोक भक्तों का निवास-स्थान है। 'तस्मै' का अर्थ यह है: उसकी प्राप्ति के लिए।
A satra is that whose time of performance is a thousand years; intending the rite called satra, they sat (āsata)—that is, they took their seats.
सत्र वह है जिसके अनुष्ठान का काल एक हजार वर्ष होता है; सत्र नामक कर्म के उद्देश्य से वे बैठे, अर्थात् उन्होंने उपवेशन किया।
Or else the meaning is that "āsata" signifies "they performed." For, like the forms "ālabheta," "nirvapati," and "upayanti," the root "as" here serves merely to convey the pronouncing of the verbal affix, the meaning of the verbal root itself not being intended.
अथवा, 'आसत' का अर्थ है: उन्होंने किया। क्योंकि 'आलभेत', 'निर्वपति', 'उपयन्ति' आदि की भाँति, यहाँ 'अस्' धातु केवल प्रत्यय के उच्चारण मात्र के अर्थ में है, धातु के अपने अर्थ की विवक्षा न होने से।
Here too, in order to show through question and answer that this Mahā-purāṇa has Śrī Kṛṣṇa alone as its purport, he speaks the passage beginning "oṁ naimiṣe."
यहाँ भी, प्रश्न और उत्तर के द्वारा यह दिखाने के लिए कि इस महापुराण का तात्पर्य केवल श्रीकृष्ण में है, वे 'ॐ नैमिषे' इत्यादि वचन कहते हैं।
Regarding the word "āsata" in the commentary, this is to be understood with respect to the alternative explanation. Since the several verbal roots' meanings are not possible in each instance, and since uttering a bare affix without a verbal root is not proper, the meaning of an affix is that which has tiv and the rest as its purpose; for in this way, the root-meaning not being intended, the action-meaning of the root kṛñ is conveyed instead through an agent-denoting affix that follows the meaning of kṛñ.
Having bowed again to the blessed guru and to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the ocean of compassion, I take refuge in that Śrī Śuka, the Lord of the world, the eye of the universe. Those compassionate ones by whom, for our sake whose vision is veiled by darkness, the Bhāvārtha-dīpikā was composed—Śrīdhara Svāmī is here our recourse. That commentary of his which is to be written, which gladdens the hearts of the devotees, draws some of its substance from the great ones and some from the mercy of the blessed guru.
Thus, having turned the listeners toward Him, at the beginning of the recitation of the Śrī Bhāgavata he performs an auspicious invocation once more, with the word "om." As has been said: "The syllable oṁ and the word atha—these two of old burst forth from the throat of Brahmā, having pierced it; therefore both are auspicious."
इस प्रकार श्रोताओं को अभिमुख करके, श्री भागवत की कथा के आरम्भ में वे 'ओम्' इस शब्द से पुनः मंगलाचरण करते हैं, जैसा कि कहा गया है: 'ओंकार और अथ-शब्द—ये दोनों प्राचीन काल में ब्रह्मा के कण्ठ को भेदकर निकले; इसलिए दोनों ही मांगलिक हैं।'
By the word naimiṣa he indicates that this śāstra is of the nature of an exposition of the meaning of praṇava (oṁ). The place where the rim (nemi) of the mind-made wheel created by Brahmā is shattered is nemiśa; and nemiśa itself is naimiśa. So it is said to Vāyu: "This mind-made wheel, created by me, is being released; the place where its rim is shattered is the spot auspicious for austerity." Having spoken thus, having created the mind-made wheel resembling the sun, the Grandsire (Brahmā), having bowed to the great god (Mahādeva), released it. Those brāhmaṇas too, exceedingly delighted, having bowed to the Lord of the worlds, went to that place of the wheel where its rim was shattered; that forest became renowned thereby as Naimiṣa, worshipped by the sages.
Among people endowed with various devotional dispositions, in whatever place the mind of each one—its momentum subsiding—becomes steady, there itself, for each one, by immersion in the meaning of the Śrīmad Bhāgavata, what he himself desires is accomplished. It is by intending just this much that the placement of the word naimiṣa—a word that conveys its own meaning—for the śāstra at the very outset is to be understood.
In the reading ending in the cerebral ṣa-kāra, what is stated in the Varāha Purāṇa is to be consulted; to that effect, the Lord's words to the sage Gaura-mukha: "Having done thus, the god then said this to the sage Gaura-mukha: 'In an instant (nimiṣa) this army of demons has been slain. Therefore this forest will rightly become known as Naimiṣāraṇya, a distinguishing mark of the brāhmaṇas.'" In this reading too, the intended sense is that one should dwell in that very place where one would be able to slay quickly the enemies beginning with lust.
By the word svargāya (for heaven), at first there was on the part of Śaunaka and the others an absorption only in action accompanied by desire. Then, through association with Romaharṣaṇa, by hearing and reflecting upon the various Purāṇas and other śāstras, there came about in them a desire to inquire—so it is well known. And thereafter, through association with the saintly Ugraśravas, there arose a longing for the rasa of devotion, as has been said: "When this action gives no relief, your honor causes those whose selves are smoke-grimed to drink the sweet, the nectar-wine of Govinda's lotus feet." And thereafter, as their very inquisitiveness slackened while they were entering into devotion, the sacrifice aimed at heaven became merely a pretext (miṣa)—as stated in the passage about "the narration accompanied by Hari's glance" [bhā.pu. 1.1.21]. And this is, among those ritualists who are listeners of the Śrī Bhāgavata, a manifestation of the power of devotion across the interval of their fixity in karma; likewise, in the speaker of the Śrī Bhāgavata, the blessed guru-deva too, this is shown across the interval of fixity in Brahman, by passages such as "though firmly fixed in the qualityless" [bhā.pu. 2.1.9] and the rest.
Or: "svaḥ" means "it is sung in heaven," so Hari is svargāya—like the word urugāya; His world is Vaikuṇṭha, and the verse is "for that."
अथवा: 'स्वः' अर्थात् 'स्वर्ग में गाया जाता है', इसलिए हरि स्वर्गाय हैं—उरुगाय शब्द की भाँति; उनका लोक वैकुण्ठ है, उसके लिए।
Animiṣa is Viṣṇu. In this field of his, which belongs to Viṣṇu (vaiṣṇava)—since they say "we"—they sat (āsata), that is, they sat down, aiming at the rite called satra, that whose period of performance is a thousand years.
अनिमिष विष्णु हैं। उनके इस क्षेत्र में, जो वैष्णव है—क्योंकि वे 'वयम्' ऐसा कहते हैं—जिसका अनुष्ठान-काल एक सहस्र वर्ष अर्थात् संवत्सर है, वह सत्र नामक कर्म है; उसे उद्दिष्ट करके वे 'आसत' अर्थात् बैठ गए।
Or: "they sat" (āsata) means "they performed" (akurvata)—as one performs (ālabhate) the slaughter of the victim-beast for the agniṣṭoma, as on the new-moon day one offers (nirvapati) the śrāddha to the ancestors, and as in "one takes (upayanti) the hand of an eight-year-old maiden in marriage." In these cases, since the meaning of the verbal root is set aside in favor of its general "doing" (kṛ) sense, here a root not denoting that sense (an-as-dhātu) operates in the place of the verb.
In the first chapter of the First Canto, six questions, having the highest good and so forth as their subjects, were put by the delighted sages headed by Śaunaka. Thus, having turned the listeners toward it by declaring the eminence of the śāstra, in order to introduce the dialogue of Sūta and Śaunaka set in the mouth of those listeners, he shows the place fitting for it, in the words beginning "oṁ naimiṣe" (om, in Naimiṣa).
The syllable "om" is for auspiciousness, and also to make known that this śāstra is of the nature of the meaning of the praṇava. "In Naimiṣa," that is, in the forest of that name, the sages headed by Śaunaka sat at a satra (sacrificial session). That sacrifice in which the sponsors are themselves the officiating priests is called a satra. The meaning is "they performed it," since it is accepted that verbal roots have many meanings.
Where the felly (nemi) of the mind-formed wheel created by Brahmā became shattered, that is naimiśa: by the rule "it is seen in other cases too," the affix ḍa applies, and the augment aṇ by the prajñādi class—that very thing is naimiśa. So it is stated in the Vāyavīya: "This mind-formed wheel created by me is being released. The place where its felly shatters is the spot auspicious for austerity. Having spoken thus, having created the mind-formed wheel resembling the sun, the Grandsire (Pitāmaha), having bowed to Mahādeva, released it. Those brāhmaṇas too, exceedingly delighted, having bowed to the Lord of the worlds, went to where the felly of that wheel shatters; by that the forest became renowned as Naimiṣa, worshipped by the sages." In the reading ending in the cerebral letter (ṣ), the Vārāhī statement of the Lord is to be seen: "Having done so, the god then said this to the sage Gauramukha: by a mere instant (nimiṣa) this host of demons has been slain. Therefore this forest shall hereafter bear the name Naimiṣāraṇya, fittingly indeed, as a distinguishing mark of the brāhmaṇas."
And thus it is implied (vyaṅgya): where the mind's velocity would cease, where lust and the rest would perish, one should dwell there and meditate upon Hari. And such is that forest. To the question "of what kind?" he replies: it is in the field (kṣetra) of Viṣṇu, the Unblinking One (animiṣa), whose sight is unceasing. To the question "for what purpose did they sit there?" he replies: because He is sung even in heaven (svarga), Viṣṇu is svarga—the affix ghañ being in the sense of action; and He alone, being the dwelling resorted to by those who take shelter of Him, is the loka (abode), so the meaning is "in order to attain Him." Because the satra, through purification of the heart and through providing an occasion for the narrations, is the means of attaining Him; and that of which the years number a thousand is the satra, performed over a period of a thousand years.
