Even when the fruit is already known, prompt engagement arises through praise and injunction; therefore, praising it, he enjoins it.
On the verse beginning nigama-kalpa-taror galitam: galitam means "made to flow, made liquid," by Bhagavān Śuka.
And the Brahmāṇḍa confirms this. The Veda is declared to be a tree whose flower is dharma, whose leaves are artha, which bears the tender shoots of kāma, and whose fruit is the great liberation. Here those fruits which Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana let drop upon the earth—the Bhārata and the rest, and likewise the Bhāgavata—were held in honour by people such as Śuka, who, proclaiming the meanings of the Veda spoken by the guru and fixed firmly in the text, displayed some of the fruits at the very top of the tree; for Bhagavān, worshipped by the world, was expounding the meaning of the Veda. "O good people, drink the juices of these or of those; while I look on, O wonder, may there be for me great satisfaction, even up to liberation."
Now, however, the hearing of this work is enjoined not merely because it is the best of all śāstras, but because it is the very fruit of all śāstra. It is therefore to be served with the utmost reverence—and this he says in the verse beginning nigama.
Nigama is the Veda; that very Veda is the wish-fulfilling tree (kalpa-taru), since it is the means to every human aim, and its fruit is named Bhāgavata. That fruit, situated in Vaikuṇṭha, was brought down by Nārada and given to me, and by me it was placed in the mouth of Śuka. From his mouth, fallen to the earth, it descended gradually and wholly intact through the succession of disciples, disciples' disciples, and the like—in the form of sprouting shoots—and was not burst open by any violent fall: this is the meaning. And although this is yet to come, it is spoken of as though it had already occurred, because this śāstra proceeds precisely by narrating what is yet to come.
For this very reason it is joined with a liquid in the form of nectar: in the world it is well known that a fruit touched by a parrot's beak becomes sweet like nectar. Here Śuka is the sage. The nectar is supreme bliss, and that very bliss is the liquid, the rasa, for He indeed is rasa—as the śruti says, "For having obtained this very rasa one becomes blissful" [Tai.U. 2.7]. Therefore: "O relishers! O knowers of rasa! and among them, O feeling ones! O you skilled in savoring the particular rasa!"—and "ah, it has fallen to the earth" is an utterance about the gaining of what is hard to gain. Drink again and again this fruit named Bhāgavata.
Now, one might object: setting aside the skin, the stone, and so on, it is the rasa that is drunk from a fruit—how then can the fruit itself be drunk? To this he replies with rasam, that is, having the form of rasa. Therefore, since there is no rejectable portion such as skin or stone, drink the fruit entirely.
And here, since the wish is to express identity with rasa rather than the mere possession of rasa, and since the suffix matup (which would express possession) is not available with the word rasa, even without it "the fruit is rasa" stands as a co-referential predication. For were one to say only "fruit," the impossibility of drinking and the entailment of a rejectable portion would arise, and to remove that, "rasa" was said; while were one to say only "rasa," since rasa once fallen away cannot be drunk, "fruit" is to be understood.
And the drinking of that nectar of feeling is not to be abandoned even in liberation—so he says. Laya is dissolution, liberation; the prefix ā is in the sense of inclusion, so the phrase means "pervading up to dissolution." For this is not disregarded by the liberated as the happiness of heaven and the like is disregarded; rather, it is indeed served. As he will say: "Even sages who delight in the self and are free of all bonds offer unmotivated devotion to Urukrama; such are the qualities of Hari."
Removing a possible fault while establishing this work's supremacy even over the three Vedas—by indicating that it is the essence of their own parts—he adduces a further cause and states its distinction even over what precedes, in the passage beginning nigama.
O sensitive ones! O abodes of supreme auspiciousness! That is, you who are connoisseurs, knowers of the rasa of love for Bhagavān—even while remaining on the earth, drink, that is, make inwardly relished, that fruit which is of the form of rasa, named the Śrī-Bhāgavata: the fruit of the Veda-tree, the wish-fulfilling tree of the nigama, the ground from which all fruits arise, which by its branches and sub-branches has climbed up to Vaikuṇṭha and has trickled down by stages onto the very earth from Vaikuṇṭha.
Aho suggests the obtaining of what is hard to obtain. That scripture named the Bhāgavata, although it possesses rasa, is designated by the word rasa with the intent of expressing that it consists of rasa alone. And by the very word bhāgavata, the belonging of that rasa to another is excluded, for since the Bhāgavata belongs to Him, the rasa too is implied to belong to Him; through the double meaning of the word, it is understood to be the rasa connected with Bhagavān. And that rasa consists of nothing but love for Bhagavān—as shown by the statement of result, "in which, indeed, while being heard" [Bhā.Pu. 1.7.7] and so on, and because, precisely as consisting of that, the word rasa is applied to Śrī Bhagavān in the śruti, "He, truly, is rasa" [Tai.U. 2.7.1], and He alone is praised in "Having obtained this rasa, one becomes filled with bliss."
By the word rasikāḥ it is shown that knowership of that rasa belongs only to those whose purificatory impressions are ancient and recent. By the word galitam, having stated in the fruit-sense its greater sweetness from being well-ripened, in the scripture-sense its greater relishability from its meaning being well-accomplished is shown. By the word rasam, in the fruit-sense the absence of skin, seed, and the like is suggested, and in this sense too the absence of any rejectable portion is shown. Likewise, by the word bhāgavatam, having stated that even when other fruits exist the nigama's supreme fruit is this, its being the supreme human aim is shown.
Thus, while this fruit, which is of the nature of rasa, has distinction even in its own essential form, in order to convey its supreme excellence he states a further distinction, in the passage beginning śuka. Here, in the fruit-sense, because the fruit is perfumed by the wish-fulfilling tree, owing to its supramundane nature even the parrot (śuka) is intended as one whose mouth is nectar. Then, just as a fruit, having reached that mouth, becomes especially sweet, so too is the description of Bhagavān when connected with the mouth of a supreme devotee (parama-bhāgavata)—and how much more, then, when connected with the mouth of Śrī Śukadeva, the great Indra among the host of such supreme devotees: this is the import. For this very reason, because it has attained the highest pinnacle of supreme relish, since satisfaction will arise neither from itself nor from another, the word "drink" is used, pervading even the bliss of liberation, right up to the abode (ā-layam). And so it will be said: "even one who is fully established" [Bhā.Pu. 2.1.9] and so on. By this it is also shown that, unlike any other relishable thing, this will not be exhausted even at another time and even when there is a multitude of relishers.
Or else: there, although that rasa consists of love for Bhagavān, it is of two kinds—being a means useful to His love, and being a transformation of His love. As stated in the Twelfth Canto: "These narrations of yours, O mighty one, have been recounted to the glorious ones who, spreading their fame throughout the worlds, have departed; with the intent of teaching realized knowledge and renunciation, they are displays of speech, but not the ultimate reality. But that recounting of the qualities of Uttamaḥśloka, which, ever sung, destroys the inauspicious—that alone one should constantly hear, again and again, desiring spotless devotion to Kṛṣṇa."
Then, having stated rasa-ness in general, he states it specifically as well, in the passage beginning amṛta. The nectar is the rasa of His pastimes—because of the description of the Śrī Bhāgavata in the Twelfth Canto, "which delights the holy gods with the nectar of the host of narrations of Hari's pastimes" [Bhā.Pu. 12.13.11], and because that very thing is designated as rasa in "the relishing of the rasa of the narrations of His pastimes" [Bhā.Pu. 12.4.40]. In sat-suram, the "saints" (santaḥ) are those who delight in the self (ātmārāmāḥ)—as in "thus, of the saints, through the experience of the bliss of Brahman" [Bhā.Pu. 10.12.11] and so on; they themselves are the "gods" (surāḥ), because they relish nectar alone. But here, by the word "liquid nectar" (amṛta-drava), the very essence of the rasa of the pastimes is spoken of.
Therefore it should be explained thus: although the rasa consisting of love is indeed superior, still there is a distinction here. For the experiencers of rasa here are of two kinds: those to be instructed by "drink," and the associates of the pastimes, who experience it of themselves. Among these, the associates, who experience the rasa of the pastimes, alone experience its essence, because they are internal (antaraṅga), while the others experience only something or other, because they are external (bahiraṅga). Although this is so, still, having contemplated the essence of rasa consisting of their experience as one with the rasa consisting of your own experience, drink—because, being of such a nature, it is trickled down from the mouth of such a Śuka, flowing in the form of a stream; this is the meaning.
Thus the attainment of the supreme rasa-ness of love for Bhagavān is itself grasped by the word. And elsewhere too, in the passage beginning "for it is the essence of all the Vedānta" [Bhā.Pu. 12.13.15], there is "of one satisfied by the nectar of that rasa" and so on. Intending precisely this, the commentary glosses bhāvukāḥ here as "those skilled in contemplating the particular rasa." Likewise: "remembering the embrace of Mukunda's feet, a person who has grasped that rasa would not wish to abandon it again" [Bhā.Pu. 1.5.19] and so on.
And here, that the fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree situated in Vaikuṇṭha is of the nature of rasa alone is as in the Hayaśīrṣa-pañcarātra, in the determination of the five principles: "Hear the truth of substance, O brāhmaṇa; I shall declare it in brief. There the trees that bestow all enjoyments are wish-fulfilling trees; and whatever substance is of the form of fragrance or of sweet taste, flowers and the like—because of the absence of rejectable portions, that becomes of the form of rasa indeed; while whatever skin and seed there might be is a rejectable, hard portion. Know all that to be material, for it is not made of the non-elemental; a material substance that has rasa would here be of the form of rasa." Here "in Vaikuṇṭha" is obtained from that context.
Thus, by the first verse the śāstra's meaning was declared to be a limb of the Supreme Person; by the second verse, the śāstra's being a means that depends on the Supreme Person. That the śāstra itself is the supreme human goal he states by the third verse, with the words beginning nigama.
Nigama means the Veda; that very Veda is the wish-fulfilling tree, because it has many branches and because it bestows all the human goals. Its fruit is its essence. Bhāgavata is the Purāṇa that, in a manner unshared by others, sets forth Bhagavān; because it was composed after reflecting on the Veda again and again, it has the fruit-status of the Veda—that is, it is the gathered rasa of the meaning of all the Vedas. And so he will say: "Bhagavān, having repeatedly examined Brahman in its entirety through his intellect, the immovable one ascertained that by which love toward the self might arise." Since devotion to Bhagavān is the essence of the meaning of all the Vedas, this Bhāgavata, which sets that forth, is the essence above all.
Pibata (drink): for the pacifying of the thirst that is the burning of saṁsāra, make everything enter the heart through the cups of the ears. O rasikas: those who deal in rasa in a manner unshared by others. And of what further sort? Bhāvukā: skilled at bringing to bear the elements such as vibhāva and anubhāva (and even in the reading bhāvakā the meaning is the same). For even if one were a rasika merely by possessing the stable emotion (sthāyibhāva), if there were an inability to bring to bear the vibhāva and the rest, there would be no relishing; and bringing to bear the vibhāva and the rest is equally fruitless if the stable emotion is absent. Thus, by this pair of qualifiers, an excellence of skill is suggested: the meaning is that if such a rasa is not relished, your being rasikas would be quite fruitless.
How is there drinking of a fruit? Therefore he says rasam (the juice): because there is no pithless portion such as the skin and stones, and since it is of the nature of juice alone, drinking is possible—that is the meaning.
Even though it is juice, because there is no excess of sweetness, the fruit would be unrelishable—thus an objection. Therefore he says amṛta-drava-saṁyutam (joined with the flowing of nectar). Amṛta is liberation; its drava is its course, its attainment; and the fruit is joined with that. Thus, because the fruit of the supreme-goal wish-fulfilling tree is well known as having the taste of nectar, it has the state of being joined with the flowing of nectar. Even of such a thing there is no directly drinkable state—hence its state of being juice was stated; and even though it is juice, in the absence of excess of sweetness there is no drinkable state—hence both were stated.
Ālayam (up to dissolution): laya is liberation, and the sense is "pervading that." Because this very drinking is the cause of liberation, liberation will come about effortlessly—and this was hinted at in amṛta-drava-saṁyutam. By this, the absence of obstruction such as disease and the like is also explained, since otherwise liberation-while-living (jīvanmukti) would not be possible.
But the fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree is enjoyable by the gods; how could it be obtained by us? Therefore he says śuka-mukhād bhuvi galitam (fallen to the earth from the mouth of Śuka). Aho is an exclamation at the gaining of the ungainable. It was taught by the sage Śuka to Parīkṣit; having heard that, Sūta related it to Śaunaka and the others, and from that it spread into the world—this is the meaning.
Alternatively, nigama means "a great hook"—for the lexicon says "a hook is called nigama." Of that hook the kalpa-taru is a lofty tree like the heavenly tree, such as a mango; its fruit, the juice, abundant in juice through full ripeness, joined with a nectar-like flowing, is enjoyable by a lord of the earth endowed with special opulence (bhāgavata): because it had fallen from the mouth of Śuka, a bird, then, although hard to obtain, it was come by; and some meritorious person, through the force of a special merit, drinks it up to ālaya, the dissolution of the senses—in that manner. Thus, with the nigama, Śuka, and the rest as what is implied, it is a simile-figure (upamālaṅkāra).
Or, rasamā means a wealth of rasa, and its ālaya is rasamālaya—so it may be a single word. But on the flowed-down reading (nirgalitā): O rasikas, you bhāvakas, drink—relish—the bhāgavata, that is, the rasa concerning Bhagavān, called devotion to Bhagavān, up to ālaya, the dissolution of the mind; because the rasa of devotion to Bhagavān is the cause of the dissolution of the mind.
He states its extreme rarity with the word phalam (fruit): it is the fruit of all meritorious actions. And so he will say: "By charity, vows, austerity, fire-oblation, recitation, study of scripture, and self-restraint, and by various other auspicious means, devotion to Kṛṣṇa is indeed accomplished."
He states the seen means for the attainment of even such a thing with nigama-kalpa-pataroḥ (of the nigama wish-fulfilling tree). Here nigama is the fifth Veda, called the Bhāgavata; that very Veda is the wish-fulfilling tree, because it is adorned with many cantos (skandhas). Galitam means "fallen from it," that is, made manifest as a great poem (mahākāvya) in the form of the Bhāgavata—this is the meaning. Since it is seen that a tree manifests its juice only through some one passage, for that purpose he qualifies the tree: śuka-mukhāt (from the mouth of Śuka). Here Śuka is Bādarāyaṇi, and mukha is that of which the gate is the mouth; from that nigama wish-fulfilling tree. Without the lineage-flow that has the form of the dialogue of Śuka and Parīkṣit, there would be no experience of rasa in it—this is the meaning. And of what further sort? Amṛta-drava-sam (cutting the flowing of nectar): amṛta-drava is the juice enjoyable by the gods and the course to liberation; "sam" means that it cuts—breaks, brings to a lower state—that flowing of nectar, in that manner; because in the experience of the rasa of devotion no desire for heaven or liberation arises.
And so Dhruva will say: "That cessation which would arise for embodied beings from meditation on Your lotus feet or from hearing the narrations of Your devotees—let that, O Lord, not be for me in Brahman, even though it be Your own glory—what then of those falling from a heavenly chariot shattered by the sword of Time, the ender?" And the serpents' wives say: "Neither the surface of heaven, nor universal sovereignty, nor the rank of Brahmā, nor lordship over the lower regions, nor the perfections of yoga, nor freedom from rebirth do those who have taken refuge in the dust of Your feet desire."
How could such a thing be obtained by us? Therefore he says bhuvi yutam (joined on the earth). Aho is an utterance of supreme good fortune. And here, because the Bhāgavata is the uncommon cause of the experience of the rasa of devotion, with the intention of stating the Bhāgavata's identity with the rasa, there is grammatical co-reference (sāmānādhikaraṇya). Through the rasa's identity with that, the intention is that the Purāṇa called Bhāgavata too is the supreme human goal; hence no separate effort need be made for engagement in it.
Thus the commentary on the first three verses of the First Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavata, composed by Śrīman Madhusūdana Sarasvatī—disciple of the venerable Viśveśvara Sarasvatī, the worshipful paramahaṁsa-parivrājakācārya—is complete. Hari Oṁ Tat Sat.
Thus, having stated the majesty (aiśvarya) of this crest-jewel of all śāstras—consisting of such powers as the Lord's restraining capacity—he now states its sweetness (mādhurya) in the verse beginning nigama.
Nigama means the Veda; that very Veda is the wish-fulfilling tree (kalpa-taru). Although that tree bestows upon those who take shelter of it the fruit consisting of the various desired human aims (puruṣārthas), still, because it is a tree, the fruit natural to it is this Bhāgavata. By śleṣa (double meaning), this fruit, which possesses the relish of Bhagavān and the like, was given by Him alone to His own devotees; hence, apart from them, no one else has the power to attribute praise here—such is the import. Galitam (dropped) means fallen of itself through the tree's own ripeness, not made to fall by force, which indicates its complete sweetness.
And it is not split open by being thrown down from a height, nor is it less than supremely sweet—this he states in the passage beginning śuka. From the supremely lofty crest—from Śrī Nārāyaṇa—onto the branch that is Brahmā, and from there reaching the mouth of Śuka, it is like honey ripened by the sun, joined with the flowing nectar of immortality; and by Śuka himself, with his own beak, a door too was made for the nectar to pour out. Further, because it was relished by him it is supremely sweet; and because it descends slowly and gradually from the branch that is Suta and the rest, it is unbroken. By this, eagerness for drinking is indicated, together with the brokenness of Śrī Bhāgavata when it is relished by the strength of one's own intellect, without the lineage of gurus (guru-paramparā).
Now, how is only the fruit to be drunk? To this he replies in the passage beginning rasam: this fruit is of the very nature of rasa; there is no rejectable portion here, such as skin, seed, and the like—such is the import.
Laya means liberation (mokṣa), or the state of being liberated-in-life such as sālokya and so on; having pervaded that—because therein the singing of the Lord's pastimes (līlā) is well established.
Or else: laya is the eighth sāttvika reaction, the dissolution (pralaya) born of relishing rasa; "drink" up to that point—by this it is to be understood that in the drinking, the sāttvika reactions such as stupefaction (stambha) and the rest arise.
When that dissolution (pralaya) occurs, although there is a pause because the drinking is then indistinct, still, when there is reawakening again, let him drink once more up to dissolution, but not abandon it—this is the sense of the word muhur (again and again).
Or else, muhur means that even of what has been drunk, in drinking again there is only an increase of sweetness.
Aho is used in the sense of intense astonishment. Rasikāḥ means "O you who know rasa!"—since rati arises only in devotees, since rati alone is the abiding emotion (sthāyi-bhāva), and since the abiding emotion alone is what is being relished, here there is no share whatsoever for the jñānī, the karmī, or the yogī—such is the import. And "O bhāvukas!"—therefore you alone are the auspicious ones, while others are simply inauspicious—such is the import.
In the reading bhāvakāḥ, it means those who possess the activity of bhāvaka-hood (causing to be experienced).
To explain: through the activity of bhāvaka-hood, the abiding emotion (sthāyī), being caused to be experienced, is enjoyed—this is the view of Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka. Therein, by śleṣa, the very nature (svarūpa) of Bhagavān is itself rasa.
To explain: in the Taittirīya Upaniṣad, having said "the knower of Brahman attains the Supreme" [Taittirīya 1], and having described the creation proceeding upward from Brahman by the sequence of ether and so on, up to the Virāṭ-puruṣa, and then by the sequence of what is innermost within that—through passages beginning "than that, indeed, than this, there is another, inner"—the sheaths made of food (anna-maya), of vital air (prāṇa-maya), of mind (mano-maya), of cognition (vijñāna-maya), and of bliss (ānanda-maya) are taught; and among these, the brahman-hood of the bliss-sheath alone is established by "the bliss-sheath, by reason of repetition" [Vedānta-sūtra 1.1.13]. And in the differing view, by "its tail is bliss, the self, Brahman; the tail is the support" [Taittirīya 5], the brahman-hood of that tail alone, and its being the very support of Brahman, are established. And immediately after that comes the śruti "He is indeed rasa; for having obtained this rasa, this one becomes blissful" [Taittirīya 7]. In that śruti, by the word sa (he), neither the bliss-sheath that was begun nor its tail, Brahman, is referred to separately, since taking each separately would entail breaking the progressive sequence of ever-higher meaning. Therefore its meaning is this: that well-known one is certainly rasa alone, which is inner—that is, more excellent—even than the bliss-sheath and than Brahman. By "For I am the support of Brahman" [Gītā 14.27], the being-the-support-of-Brahman of Śrī Kṛṣṇa alone is established. And in "the thunderbolt to the wrestlers" [Bhā.Pu. 10.43.17], because in Him alone all rasas are directly perceived simultaneously, and because there Bhagavān, the embodiment of the whole assembly of all rasas such as śṛṅgāra and the rest, also for the most part appeared so—from the explanation of the revered feet of Śrī Svāmin—His alone is the nature of being all rasas; hence, by Śrī Gītā and Śrī Bhāgavata themselves, by the word rasa Śrī Kṛṣṇa alone is explained. "Having obtained Him alone, this cognition-sheath attains the topmost limit of bliss"—because by the subsequent śruti "this very inquiry into bliss takes place" [Taittirīya 8], it is made known that the inquiry into bliss culminates in rasa alone with respect to Him.
Or else: this bliss-sheath too—from such passages as "the twice-born woman's sons, by Me, desiring to see you two" [Bhā.Pu. 10.89.50], which expresses astonishment, and "and of one's own abundance of fortune" [Bhā.Pu. 3] and the like—having obtained Him alone, becomes blissful.
And therefore that rasa, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the fruit, has dropped from that wish-fulfilling tree which is the nigama—it is not directly situated there. For that purpose the nigama is not to be searched out; rather, only the mouth of Śuka—this he states in the passage beginning śuka-mukhāt. It is to be supposed that Vyāsa, knowing this fruit to be supremely sweet, having drawn it down and brought it out of affection, placed it in the very mouth of his own son—such is the import.
Or else, śuka-mukhāt is a fifth-case (ablative) in the sense of cause—because of the authority of Śuka's statement, "they to whom I am dear, the very self" [Bhā.Pu. …] and so on.
Having been born on the earth, in the land of Vraja—O bhāvukas, rasikas, beloved ones who are true—drink the Bhāgavata, the sweetness of rasa which is the very nature of Bhagavān.
Or else: the rasa of Bhagavān, of Śrī Kṛṣṇa—ālayaṁ, laya here meaning śleṣa, that is, embrace—having pervaded that. Amṛta means imperishable; the drava (flowing) is the melting of mind and eyes; "drink" in such a way that it is joined with that—by this, the drinking of the lips (adhara-pāna) is indicated. This very thing—the ripe fruit dropped from the wish-fulfilling tree which is the nigama—is, as a fruit, the devotion called rāgānugā, consisting of following after the gopīs, which is here enjoined. For the nigama too, out of greed for that very thing, having performed such devotion as is seen in the Bṛhad-vāmana, and having been born in the land of Vraja and become gopīs by the hundreds of thousands, drank the nectar-rasa of His lips. This is seen in the Veda-stuti—a most secret meaning.
Now, some explain this "For I am the support of Brahman" otherwise. True; but because their reading is unsupported by context and is a mere postulation, it should be regarded as simply unsound, whereas this very way alone is sound. To explain:
"And he who serves Me with unswerving devotional service (bhakti-yoga), transcending these guṇas, becomes fit for becoming Brahman. For I am the support of Brahman, of the immortal and the imperishable, of the eternal dharma, and of absolute happiness."
The meaning of these two verses: Now, how, by devotion to Him, is there attainment of the attributeless Brahman (nirguṇa-brahma)? That would come about only through the experience of Him alone, the one without a second. To this he speaks in the passage beginning brahmaṇo hi. "Hi" means "because": of that Brahman which is well known in śruti as the supreme support, of that too I am the support—that wherein it is established (pratiṣṭhīyate); thus pratiṣṭhā means the shelter (āśraya), since the word pratiṣṭhā has that meaning everywhere, in all the śrutis on the food-sheath and the rest. Therefore I am the support of the immortal, of liberation (mokṣa) too; and by avyaya (imperishable) he wards off, by secondary indication (lakṣaṇā), its being taken in the sense of heaven and the like. Just as I am the support of the eternal dharma called bhakti, which abides in both the states of practice (sādhana) and result (phala), likewise I am the support of the absolute (ekāntika) happiness attainable through that, and of prema. Therefore, since everything is dependent on Me, one who, through worship of Me performed with the desire for kaivalya, is being dissolved into Brahman attains brahman-hood as well.
Here the Śrī Viṣṇu Purāṇa too is authority: "He is the auspicious refuge of the all-pervading mind and likewise of the self" [Viṣṇu Purāṇa 6.7.76]. And there too it has been explained by the revered feet of Svāmin: He is the refuge, the support, of the all-pervading self, of the supreme Brahman too. That is what was stated by Bhagavān in "For I am the support of Brahman."
Likewise in the Viṣṇu-dharma too, in the context of the Naraka-dvādaśī: "In prakṛti, in the puruṣa, and in Brahman too, He is the Lord; just as the one and only Puruṣa, Vāsudeva, stands established." There itself, in the context of the worship on the lunar-month asterism: "Just as You, Acyuta, are higher than the highest, beyond even that which has become Brahman, the supreme Self—so, O Acyuta, fulfill that desire of mine, and take away my distress, O immeasurable one." Likewise in the Hari-vaṁśa too, in the context of bringing back the brāhmaṇa's sons, the words of Śrī Bhagavān to Arjuna: "That supreme, highest Brahman divides this entire world; that dense effulgence is Mine alone—you ought to know it, O Bhārata" [Hari-vaṁśa 2.114.11-12]. And in the Brahma-saṁhitā too: "That Brahman—undivided, infinite, all-comprising—which is the effulgence of the powerful one, differentiated as the boundless wealth such as the earths and the rest among the millions upon millions of universe-spheres: that Govinda, the primeval Person, Him I worship." For this very reason the śruti too, the Gopāla-tāpanī [2.95]: "He who, having transcended waking, dream, and deep sleep, is beyond the turīya—the Gopāla… to Him indeed, obeisance upon obeisance."
Having now arrived at the verse's intrinsic subject, the commentator takes it up in the words beginning nigama.
O connoisseurs (rasikas), drink the Bhāgavata, the fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree that is the Veda. The nigama is the Veda; that it is the Lord's own breath is shown by the Bṛhad-āraṇyaka, where the Ṛg-veda, the Yajur-veda, the Sāma-veda, the Atharvāṅgirasa, history, the Purāṇa, and the rest are called the out-breath of that great Being, and by the Chāndogya, where one says, 'I have studied the Ṛg-veda, sir, the Yajur-veda, the Sāma-veda, the Atharvaṇa as the fourth, and history and Purāṇa as the fifth, the Veda of the Vedas.' This nigama, the Veda established in sixteen [parts], is itself the wish-fulfilling tree because it grants every fruit. As to what its fruit is like, he says it has 'fallen to earth' — that is, it was attained on the earth through the lineage beginning with Brahmā and Nārada; thus dependence on a disciplic succession (sampradāya) is shown.
The word 'aho' conveys the gaining of something hard to obtain. Now, how is the fruit to be drunk? To this he answers with 'rasa': accordingly it is in the form of juice, like sweet substances such as nectar-balls and the like, free from skin and the rest; and therefore it is drinkable. Even there it is said to come 'from Śuka's mouth' — like honey from the sun, from his mouth: joined with the nectarous liquid obtained from him, made surpassingly sweet by his tone swelling with love and by the sweetness of his discourse arising out of disinterestedness. It should be understood, moreover, that this Bhāgavata, although yet to come, was nonetheless spoken beforehand by Dvaipāyana through his omniscience — just as the work composed by Vālmīki concerning the Lord of the Raghus was spoken beforehand. Now, up to what limit is it to be drunk? To this he says, 'until dissolution.' 'Dissolution' (laya) is the merging into the Lord's feet, and 'pervading that' means even in liberation. This is because, as in passages such as 'singing this Sāma he abides' and 'the wise ever behold that supreme abode of Viṣṇu,' even there the devotion of glorification and the like, being supremely sweet through hearing, is impossible to abandon.
Thus the author of the sūtras says that even there it continues up to departure, for otherwise there would be fault.
This is to be understood here: although the whole nigama, being the breath of the Lord, is an entire mass of syllables of the nature of consciousness and bliss, nevertheless, because of the slightness of what is denoted, that character remains hidden in it; whereas in this portion, because of the greatness of what is denoted, its character of being a fruit composed of rasa shines forth manifestly. And whatever conduct of kings of holy fame is serviceable here is likewise to be known as being of that same form, by the maxim of a drop falling into a mine of salt.
By the address 'O tasteful ones (bhāvukas), being of auspicious garb,' ritualists who slaughter animals are excluded. Although this work is in the form of Veda, in this portion which is history and Purāṇa the eligibility of śūdras and the rest holds by the very force of statements such as 'for women, śūdras, and the unworthy among the twice-born.' It is just as, by the force of the injunction 'in the rainy season the chariot-maker should set up his fires,' even the chariot-maker of mixed birth has a place in the mantra that is a member of the kindling of the sacrificial fires — so it is here likewise.
Thus by these three, the scripture's subject-matter, its relation, its purpose, and its qualified person have been shown. Among them, 'the supreme truth' is the subject-matter. 'The real entity is here to be known' — so the relation is that of the denoted and the denoter. 'Bestowing auspiciousness' is the uprooting of the threefold misery, and 'until dissolution' indicates the purpose: such a liberation in which devotion continues throughout. 'To be known by the saintly who are free from envy' indicates the qualified person; and so the set of four prerequisites (anubandha-catuṣṭaya) is complete.
The qualified person is of three kinds: the one firmly established, the one fully established, and the one free from dependence. Among them, the first is one who performs his prescribed duties with the intention of worshipping Hari and who wishes to behold the variety of the world. The second is one who, performing those duties out of a wish to benefit the world, is absorbed in devotion to Hari. The third is one who, purified by truthfulness, austerity, and recitation, is devoted to Hari alone. The first and the middle one possess an āśrama, and their works are precisely those free from defect, whereas the last is precisely without an āśrama — as will become clear in its proper place.
