In the verse beginning dharma, the eligible candidate (adhikāri), the subject matter (viṣaya), and the fruit (phala) are stated.
'धर्म' इत्यादि पद से अधिकारी, विषय और फल कहे जाते हैं।
It is projjhita-kaitava in that all deceit is wholly cast off through indifference to the fruit, and parama (supreme) in that it is offered to the Lord (Īśvara).
फल की अपेक्षा न रखने के कारण यह धर्म कपट से सर्वथा रहित है, और ईश्वर को अर्पित किए जाने से परम है।
The mark of the saintly (sat) is given in such verses as: "Forbearing, compassionate, well-wishers of all embodied beings, having no one as an enemy, peaceful, saintly, and ornamented by saintly conduct; they render unto Me firm devotion with an undivided disposition fixed on Me" [Bhā.Pu. 3.25.21–22]. Yet envy among the saintly is sometimes seen, as in the case of Arjuna toward Ekalavya; this is to be avoided toward those who are superior by one who seeks knowledge. So too the Mahā-saṁhitā: "One should always wholly abandon envy toward those who are superior; that toward which one harbors envy is lost to that very person."
Thus "real" (vāstava) means that which is full of eternally-removed faults and full of good qualities. So too the Nitya-saṁhitā: "That which has all faults cast off, which possesses the great qualities of bliss and the rest, the supreme Brahman at all times — therefore it is declared real (vāstava)." A "real thing" (vastu) is unobstructed and eternal. And so the Skānda: "Because of dwelling (vasana) and of causing to dwell (vāsana), the real thing (vastu) is eternal and unobstructed; and because this is caused to dwell by it, by that name it is termed Brahman."
What use, then, are other discourses on artha, kāma, and the like? So too the Gāruḍa: "Since dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa have one and the same abode — the indwelling of the Lord within the heart — I shall not declare them separately."
अर्थ, काम आदि के अन्य कथनों से क्या प्रयोजन? गारुड में भी कहा गया है - 'चूँकि धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष का एक ही पद है, अर्थात् हृदय में ईश्वर का अवरोध (अन्तर्निवास), इसलिए मैं उन्हें पृथक् नहीं कहूँगा।'
The word "at once" (sadyaḥ) is what is intended: it means "in that very moment" (tat-kṣaṇāt). For candidates who are not fully qualified it is not attained in that very moment — and hence the word "at once."
यहाँ 'सद्यः' शब्द अपेक्षित है, जिसका अर्थ है उसी क्षण। और जो अधिकारी असम्पूर्ण हैं उनके लिए उसी क्षण वह प्राप्त नहीं होता - इसी कारण 'सद्यः' शब्द दिया गया है।
From the remembrance of the candidate, the subject matter, and the fruit, an increase of the fruit comes about. So too the Vāmana: "Having remembered the eligibility, the fruit, what is to be expounded, and the real thing (vastu), the Lord who begins a treatise produces a great fruit."
अधिकारी, विषय और फल के स्मरण से फल की अधिकता होती है। वामन में भी कहा गया है - 'अधिकार, फल, प्रतिपाद्य और जो वस्तु है, इन्हें स्मरण करके जो ईश्वर ग्रन्थ का आरम्भ करता है, वह महान् फल उत्पन्न करता है।'
Now, in order to set the hearer in motion, Śrīdhara shows in the verse beginning dharmaḥ the supremacy of the Śrī Bhāgavata over all the śāstras, which concern the three sections (kāṇḍas).
अब श्रोता को प्रवृत्त करने के लिए, तीनों काण्डों को विषय करने वाले समस्त शास्त्रों की अपेक्षा श्रीभागवत की श्रेष्ठता को 'धर्मः' इत्यादि से दिखाते हैं।
Here, in this glorious, beautiful Bhāgavata, the supreme dharma is set forth. The cause of its being supreme is that it is the dharma in which deceit — characterized by the desire for fruit — is thoroughly cast off: pra- (thoroughly), ujjhitam (cast off), kaitavam (deceit); and by the word pra- even the desire for liberation is excluded. The dharma set forth here is solely characterized by the worship of the Lord; thus, with regard to its qualified practitioner too, he states this dharma's supremacy. Nirmatsarāṇām means "of those free from matsara," matsara being the inability to bear another's excellence; and satām means "of the good," who are compassionate to all beings. In this way the supremacy over the śāstras concerned with the karma section has been stated.
He states the supremacy over the śāstras concerned with the jñāna section too, in the passage beginning vedyam. The real entity, the thing that is the supreme reality, is what is to be known — not a thing in the form of substance, quality, and so forth, as with the Vaiśeṣikas.
ज्ञान-काण्ड को विषय करने वाले शास्त्रों की अपेक्षा भी श्रेष्ठता को 'वेद्यम्' इत्यादि से कहते हैं। वास्तविक, परमार्थ-भूत वस्तु जानने योग्य है - न कि वैशेषिकों के मत की भाँति द्रव्य, गुण आदि के रूप वाली।
Or else, taking the word vāstava: the jīva is a part of the entity, māyā is its power, and the world is its effect — all that is the entity alone, not separate from it; thus it is "to be known," meaning it can be known with no effort at all.
अथवा 'वास्तव' शब्द से यह अर्थ है - जीव वस्तु का अंश है, माया वस्तु की शक्ति है, और जगत् वस्तु का कार्य है; वह सब वस्तु ही है, उससे पृथक् नहीं। इस प्रकार वह 'वेद्य' अर्थात् बिना ही प्रयत्न के जाना जा सकता है।
What then comes of this? In answer he says śivadam — bestowing supreme happiness; and moreover it is the uprooting of the three miseries, the bodily and the rest. By this, the supremacy over the śāstras concerned with the jñāna section has been shown.
उससे क्या होता है? इसके उत्तर में कहते हैं - 'शिवदम्' अर्थात् परम सुख देने वाला। और भी, यह आध्यात्मिक आदि तीनों तापों का उन्मूलन है। इससे ज्ञान-काण्ड को विषय करने वाले शास्त्रों की अपेक्षा श्रेष्ठता दिखायी गयी।
He states the supremacy as regards its author too: the great sage (mahā-muni) is Śrī Nārāyaṇa, and the work was first composed in brief by him (kṛte).
कर्ता की दृष्टि से भी श्रेष्ठता को कहते हैं - महामुनि श्रीनारायण हैं, और उनके द्वारा प्रथम संक्षेप से इसे रचा गया।
He states the supremacy pertaining to the subject matter of the devatā section, in the passage beginning kiṁ vā. Paraiḥ means "by other śāstras, or by the means stated in them." Or rather — is the Lord made firm (avarudhyate) in the heart at once by those? The word vā here carries a sense of disparagement.
देवता-काण्ड के विषय में स्थित श्रेष्ठता को 'किं वा' इत्यादि से कहते हैं। 'परैः' अर्थात् अन्य शास्त्रों से, अथवा उनमें कहे गये साधनों से। अथवा क्या ईश्वर हृदय में सद्यः ही 'अवरुध्यते' अर्थात् स्थिर किया जाता है? यहाँ 'वा' शब्द कटाक्ष के अर्थ में है।
Rather, by those other means He is attained only after delay and only somehow; but here He is made firm at that very moment, by those who are eager — who simply wish to hear.
अन्यत्र तो वह विलम्ब से और किसी प्रकार ही स्थिर होता है; किन्तु यहाँ तो सुनने की इच्छा वाले शुश्रूषुओं के द्वारा उसी क्षण से वह स्थिर कर लिया जाता है।
But if this is so, then why do not all hear it? In answer to that he says kṛtibhiḥ: the meaning is that the desire to hear does not arise without merits.
यदि ऐसा ही है, तो सब क्यों नहीं सुनते? इस पर कहते हैं - 'कृतिभिः'; अर्थात् श्रवण की इच्छा पुण्यों के बिना उत्पन्न नहीं होती।
Therefore, because the meaning of all three sections too is here expounded just as it is, this very work is supreme over all the śāstras; hence this alone is ever to be heard — such is the purport.
इसलिए, यहाँ तीनों काण्डों के अर्थ का भी यथावत् प्रतिपादन होने के कारण यही समस्त शास्त्रों की अपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ है; अतः सदा यही श्रवण करने योग्य है - ऐसा भाव है।
Showing the distinction of this śāstra that is about to be taught from the śāstras of the three sections (kāṇḍas) — which expound karma, jñāna, and bhakti — Jīva states its superiority in order, in the passage beginning dharma.
अब जिस शास्त्र का कथन किया जाने वाला है, उसकी कर्म, ज्ञान और भक्ति का प्रतिपादन करने वाले तीन काण्डविषयक शास्त्रों से विशेषता दिखाते हुए वे क्रमशः उसका उत्कर्ष 'धर्म' इत्यादि से कहते हैं।
As for the dharma that is first set forth here, it is supreme indeed, because it is set forth — by such passages as "that is the supreme dharma of men from which devotion to Adhokṣaja arises" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.6], and ending with "Therefore, O best of the twice-born, the complete success of the dharma carried out by men according to the divisions of varṇa and āśrama is the pleasing of Hari" — as having its sole aim in the satisfaction of Bhagavān and as producing pure devotion.
Because that dharma too has its sole aim in Him, it is one in which deceit (kaitava) — the fraud characterized by the intention of a result — has been thoroughly cast off (pra-ujjhita); and by the word pra- even the intention of liberation of every kind, beginning with sālokya, is dismissed. For precisely because it has its sole aim in Him, it belongs to those free of envy (nirmatsara) — envy (matsara) being the inability to bear another's excellence, which belongs only to one who craves a result — it belongs only to those devoid of that. By implication this extends to the slaying of an animal in sacrifice. "It is enjoined only for the compassionate, the saintly (sat) who are devoted to their own dharma": for one who has not stated anything so explicit as this, its superiority is declared over the karma-śāstra and the upāsanā-śāstra in the portion that expounds those respective subjects, because dharma arises only in both of those — the compassionate and the saintly. This being so, the talk of that which has the very form of direct glorification and the like — let it stand far off indeed. Such is the purport.
Now he states its superiority, as before, even over the branches of the jñāna-kāṇḍa, in the passage beginning vedyam. Although it is set forth in those branches, which are for the most part indifferent to devotion to Bhagavān, yet by the principle of such passages as "casting off devotion, the path of welfare" [Bhā.Pu. 10.14.4] it becomes "to be known" — to be ascertained — here alone: this is the meaning of vedyam.
It uproots the threefold suffering (tāpa-traya), shattering it down to its root, ignorance (avidyā). Likewise (tathā) it gives — that is, causes to be experienced — the auspicious (śiva), the supreme bliss. Elsewhere, in liberation, since there would be no experiencing reflection upon it, there would result the contingency of its being no true human aim (apuruṣārtha); but here, because of that reflection, there is distinction.
And it is not that the mere excellence of such a setting-forth is the cause of its being the means to those several rare attainments; rather, even its own nature (svarūpa) is the cause, as he says in the passage beginning śrīmad-bhāgavata. Its being the Śrīmad-Bhāgavata means its being the expounder of Bhagavān; and its being śrīmat means its possessing such a natural inherent potency, as is the case with the names and so forth of Śrī Bhagavān — the suffix matup being used in the sense of constant connection (nitya-yoga). For this very reason, by designating it as a whole, its being a name (nāmatva) — like nīlotpala (blue lotus) and the like — is made known; otherwise there would be the fault of an undiscerned predicate-portion (avimṛṣṭa-vidheyāṁśa). Hence it is said in the Śrī Gāruḍa, "The work of eighteen thousand verses bearing the name Śrīmad-Bhāgavata," and likewise by the commentators, "the wish-fulfilling tree bearing the name Śrī-Bhāgavata." Hence the designation in some places by the name Bhāgavata alone is like calling Satyabhāmā simply Bhāmā.
He states that the cause of its having such power is also its having the supremely best author, in the passage mahā-muniḥ — Śrī Bhagavān — and because of His being the crest-jewel among the host of greatly powerful ones who have reached the far shore of the highest deliberation, as the śruti says: "Having become a sage (muni), he reflected." By Him it was first revealed in summary form as the four verses (catuḥ-ślokī), and then revealed in full, following such passages as "To whom this was declared."
Thus, granting that this whole class of superiority may be possible for the most part elsewhere too, yet the direct realization (sākṣātkāra) of Śrī Bhagavān — who is the crest-jewel among the human aims that are the supreme objects-to-be-known of all the knowledge-śāstras — is easily attained there alone; saying this, he states its supremacy over all in the passage beginning kiṁ vā. Or (kiṁ vā): by other śāstras, or by the means stated in them, is the Lord (Īśvara), Bhagavān, immediately (sadyaḥ) confined — made firm — in the heart? The word vā is in the sense of disparagement (kaṭākṣa): rather, only after delay and somehow or other. But here (atra) it is, that very instant (tat-kṣaṇāt), confined — by those who wish to hear (śuśrūṣu), that is, by those who desire to listen. But if this is so, then why do not all hear? To that he says kṛtibhiḥ, meaning "by the meritorious (sukṛti)"; for the desire to hear does not arise without such merit (sukṛti). Such is the purport.
Or else (athavā): the meaning is — by those others, namely the means called dharma, the direct realization of Brahman, and the like, characterized as the worship of the Lord free of all craving up to liberation, whether stated or unstated as attainments — what or how much greatness is here found in them? Such is the sense.
अथवा इसका यह अर्थ है - उन अन्य साध्यों के द्वारा, अर्थात् मोक्षपर्यन्त सब कामना से रहित ईश्वर-आराधना रूप धर्म, ब्रह्म-साक्षात्कार आदि कहे हुए अथवा अनकहे साध्यों के द्वारा, यहाँ क्या अथवा कितना माहात्म्य उपपन्न होता है?
For the Lord (Īśvara) who — by the merit-bearing (kṛti), through devotion obtained somehow by the gradual sequence of those several means, for those who have thereby become fulfilled — is at once, pervading that very single moment, made firm in the heart: that very same Lord here, by those who simply wish to hear, is from that very instant onward made firm forever. Such is the meaning.
Therefore, because here there is the manifest setting-forth and the rest of the secret of the three kāṇḍas, and especially because of its having the form of the knowledge that draws the Lord (Īśvara) near, this very work is the best of all śāstras. For this very reason the word atra ("here") has been uttered three times, for that threefold utterance is for the sake of determination (nirdhāraṇa). Therefore this alone is constantly to be heard by all. Such is the purport.
Objection: this Purāṇa ought not to be undertaken, since its purport is already covered; for it would be either for the knowledge of dharma, or for the knowledge of the truth of the self (ātma-tattva), or for upāsanā (worship). The first option does not hold, since its purport is already covered by the Viṣṇu-purāṇa and the like; nor the second, since that is established by the Mīmāṁsā of the four chapters (catur-lakṣaṇī); nor the third, since its purport is already covered by the Nārada-pañcarātra and the like. Thus ends the objection.
Therefore he says, in the verse beginning dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitava (dharma, with deceit cast off): here, in the Śrīmad-bhāgavata, the supreme dharma is set forth — "is set forth" being supplied to complete the sense. Śrīmattva (being possessed of splendour) means having sweet words that manifest the manifold rasas. And thus, even though the object to be established (prameya) is the same, there is no purposelessness in the undertaking, since the dharma-śāstras and the like lack such śrīmattva; and because the distinctiveness of the object to be established is most evident, there is all the more no purposelessness. This is the import.
When it could have been said "in the splendid Bhāgavata" (śrīmati bhāgavate), the compound śrīmad- was made as a qualifier in order to declare its eternal connection (nitya-yoga), because otherwise, by detaching the qualifier that is being compounded, the regular usage would not obtain — as in the case of "the camasa, which is the first to be eaten by the vaṣaṭ-caller," where, by the very force of the compound, the prescribing of another food-item qualified by being-first is accepted. And vṛtti (compound-formation) is both a sentence (vākya) and a compound-form heard (samāsa-śruti). Accordingly, since the cognition of śrīmattva is the intended subject (uddeśya) at the very moment of the cognition of the nature of the Bhāgavata, there is no fault of an unconsidered predicative element (avimṛṣṭa-vidheyatā).
Here, although the dharmas to be set forth — characterized as hearing (śravaṇa), glorifying (kīrtana), and the rest — are many, there is oneness because of the singleness of their fruit, the attaining of the nature of Bhagavān; accordingly, a body of dharmas having a single fruit is set forth here. And since in the dharma-śāstras consisting of the ritual-action portion (karma-kāṇḍa) dharmas of varied fruits are set forth, there is no redundancy. He brings this out: parama means "best of all." And accordingly he will say: "That alone is the supreme dharma for humankind, by which devotion (bhakti) toward Adhokṣaja arises — devotion that is unmotivated and unobstructed, by which the self becomes fully satisfied."
By this it is said that its purport is not covered by the dharma-śāstras of Manu and the others, since such Bhāgavata dharmas as these are not set forth there: "Hearing of Viṣṇu, glorifying, remembering, serving His feet, worshipping, offering obeisance, servitude, friendship, and offering of oneself."
इससे यह कहा गया कि मनु आदि के धर्मशास्त्रों से इसका प्रतिपाद्य सिद्ध नहीं है, क्योंकि उनमें 'विष्णु का श्रवण, कीर्तन, स्मरण, पाद-सेवन, अर्चन, वन्दन, दास्य, सख्य और आत्म-निवेदन' इत्यादि भागवत-धर्मों का प्रतिपादन नहीं है।
Objection: even so, its purport is already covered by the Mahābhārata, for there itself it is said, "On dharma, on artha, on kāma, and on mokṣa, O bull of the Bharatas, what is here is found elsewhere; what is not here is nowhere" [Ma.Bhā. 1.56.33] — and thus the Bhāgavata teachings too are set forth there.
आक्षेप: फिर भी, महाभारत से इसका प्रतिपाद्य सिद्ध है। वहीं कहा गया है - 'हे भरतर्षभ, धर्म में, अर्थ में, काम में और मोक्ष में जो यहाँ है वह अन्यत्र है; जो यहाँ नहीं है वह कहीं नहीं है' [ma.bhā. 1.56.33] - इस प्रकार भागवत-धर्म भी प्रतिपादित हैं।
Therefore he says projjhita-kaitava (with deceit cast off). Kaitava means deceit (kapaṭa) — the pretext (vyāja) of the deeds of Yudhiṣṭhira and the others; though the Bhāgavata is its real purport, that is present in the Mahābhārata only as such a pretext. But here there is no pretext at all — thus the meaning is the description of Bhāgavata dharma as the principal matter. And accordingly he will conclude: "Hari, the destroyer of the mass of Kali's impurities, the Lord of all, is not sung constantly elsewhere; but here, again and again, Bhagavān, of unlimited forms, is fully recited at every step through the occasions of His narrations" [Bhā.Pu. 12.12.66]. All this will become clear in the dialogue between Vyāsa and Nārada.
By the prefix pra- he indicates that its purport is not covered by the Viṣṇu-purāṇa and the like; for there, deceit (kaitava) is not cast off in every respect — since by such passages as "By a man endowed with the conduct of varṇa and āśrama, the supreme Person, Viṣṇu, is worshipped — that is the path; there is no other cause of His satisfaction," it is said that even the Bhāgavata dharmas are dependent on varṇāśrama-dharma. But here, by such passages as "having abandoned his own dharma to take to the lotus feet of Hari, if one, while worshipping, should immaturely then fall away — what inauspiciousness, anywhere, befell that one? And what indeed has one gained who, worshipping, clings to his own dharma?" [Bhā.Pu. 1.5.17], the independence of the Bhāgavata dharmas from all else is set forth, so that deceit is cast off in eminent degree. And this will become clear in such passages as "Some, devoted to Vāsudeva, by devotion alone shake off sin entirely, as the sun shakes off the mist." Kaitava here is the harbouring of a desire for a result (phalābhisandhi).
By the prefix pra- even the harbouring of a desire for liberation (mokṣābhisandhi) is excluded — so say others; by them, the covering of its purport by the Mahābhārata and the like is to be set aside.
अन्य आचार्य कहते हैं कि 'प्र' शब्द से मोक्षाभिसन्धि भी निरस्त है। उनके मत में महाभारत आदि से सिद्धता का परिहार करना चाहिए।
And here, since the required meaning is obtained by the very words dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitava, the word parama is of evident meaning.
और यहाँ, 'धर्मः प्रोज्झित-कैतव' इन्हीं दो पदों से अपेक्षित अर्थ प्राप्त हो जाने पर 'परम' पद स्पष्टार्थ है।
Or here param is taken as a single word: that dharma in which the shameless (atrapā), the bashless ones, alone delight — it is so called. And accordingly he will say: "Hearing the auspicious births and deeds of the disc-wielder that are sung in the world, and singing the names whose meaning is those deeds, let one wander shameless and unattached; shameless, he sings aloud and dances, and, engaged in devotion to Me, he purifies the world" [Bhā.Pu. 11.2.39–40] — and so on.
Objection: this being so, there results a distinctness of duty (a different kind of action), since this dharma is independent of the dharma of varṇāśrama conduct. Therefore he says nirmātsarāṇāṁ satām (of the sādhus who are free from envy).
आक्षेप: ऐसा होने पर भिन्न-कर्मत्व का प्रसंग आता है, क्योंकि यह वर्णाश्रम-आचार-धर्म से निरपेक्ष है। इसलिए कहते हैं - 'निर्मात्सराणां सताम्'।
Santaḥ (the saints) are those of purified inner faculty, devoid of the faults of attachment, aversion, and the rest — the sādhus; of them alone is this Bhāgavata dharma, independent of varṇāśrama-dharma. And accordingly he will say: "One should perform ritual actions only so long as one has not become detached, or so long as faith in hearing My narrations and the like does not arise." Thus, for those of pure sattva, by virtue of good deeds performed in this birth and in other births, how can there be the result of a distinct kind of duty? — because of the absence of the attachment and aversion that would bring it about. And accordingly, further on he will state the mark of a sādhu and the steadfastness in it: "He set his mind on the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, his words on describing the qualities of Vaikuṇṭha" [Bhā.Pu. 9.4.18] — and so on.
Since the absence of envy is established by equanimity toward all alone, by the word nirmātsarāṇām he shows the pre-eminence of compassion toward all beings among the Bhāgavata dharmas. Matsara is envy (asūyā), the prior state of aversion; among all faults it is the most exceedingly sinful. He will show that the state of non-difference toward all is, like devotion, separately to be sought after: "He too chose unwavering devotion to that Lord, the Self of all, and friendship toward His devotees, and supreme compassion toward all beings." For this very reason this work is named Paramahaṁsa-saṁhitā, since without the granting of fearlessness to all beings there is no paramahaṁsa-hood.
Thus, having stated by way of distinctness — in nature (svarūpa), in the object established (prameya), and in eligibility (adhikāra) — that its purport is not covered by the karma-kāṇḍa, he states it of the jñāna-kāṇḍa too, by the words beginning vedyam (to be known). That real, unsublatable entity (vastu) shown in the first verse is here, in this work, vedyam — fit to be known, "for all" being supplied.
By the word śivadam (the giver of blessing) its being a goal of human life (puruṣārtha) is declared, in that it is of the form of supreme bliss: "it gives blessing (śiva) to all," thus śivadam. And accordingly the śruti says: "Who indeed would breathe out, who would breathe in, were this bliss not present in the ākāśa, the space of the heart? This alone causes all to find bliss" [Tai.U. 2.7.1] — thus he shows that what is of the very nature of bliss is the cause of all bliss. And the threefold affliction (tāpa-traya) is the ādhyātmika (such as fever, grief, and the like), the ādhidaivika (such as planetary possession and the like), and the ādhibhautika (such as tigers, serpents, and the like); its uprooting (unmūlana) is complete destruction without remainder. By the word tāpa-trayonmūlanam, since it is of the form of the cessation of all calamity, the cutting-off of beginningless ignorance (avidyā), the cause of all calamity, is indicated. And accordingly the śruti — "knowing Him alone, one passes beyond death" [Śve.U. 3.8], "beholding Him, one is released from the mouth of death" — by such statements shows the resulting cessation of all calamity.
And thus, that pure Brahman called Vāsudeva, which is the supreme goal of human life, having been examined through the Mīmāṁsā of the four chapters (catur-lakṣaṇī), is somehow knowable only by the seekers of liberation among the three twice-born classes (traivarṇikas) who are paramahaṁsa wandering mendicants; yet that same Brahman is here able to be known even by women, śūdras, and the rest — so great is the eminence, since the non-eligibility of women, śūdras, and the rest for hearing the catur-lakṣaṇī Mīmāṁsā has been established there itself, and because even the dull-minded among the three twice-born classes have no entry into such hard-to-fathom reasonings. But here, since that Brahman is set forth again and again, with tender expression, by words that themselves manifest such rasa, the knowing of Brahman is fitting for all — the dull, the middling, and the eminent. This is the import.
Objection: this being so, since a new poet's poem that expounds Brahman would also be fit for the hearing of women, śūdras, and the rest, it would be equal to this. Anticipating this he says mahā-muni-kṛte (made by the great sage).
आक्षेप: ऐसा होने पर, ब्रह्म का प्रतिपादक नवीन कवि का काव्य भी स्त्री-शूद्र आदि के श्रवण के योग्य होने से इसके तुल्य होगा - इस आशंका पर कहते हैं 'महा-मुनि-कृते'।
He is mahān (great) because of being an avatāra of Bhagavān — it is Bhagavān Bādarāyaṇa; and he alone is the muni, because of his constant disposition to contemplation (manana). By him too this was composed, having obtained the instruction of Nārada. And accordingly it is said: "The maker of the eighteen Purāṇas is the son of Satyavatī; know Kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana Vyāsa to be Nārāyaṇa Himself" [Skanda.Pu., Tattva.saṁ. 22]; and also, "itihāsa and Purāṇa is called the fifth Veda" [Bhā.Pu. 1.4.20]. And accordingly, although it is equal to the Vedānta in having Vyāsa as its maker, since it is declared equal to the Veda, this is superior even to the Mīmāṁsā of the four chapters (catur-lakṣaṇī) — how much more so than a new poem. By the word mahā-muni-kṛte it is indicated that even from mere recitation there is great merit, and that its authoritativeness is unimpaired.
Thus, having stated by way of the jñāna-kāṇḍa that its purport is not covered, he states it by way of the upāsanā-kāṇḍa too, by the words beginning kiṁ vā paraiḥ (what need of others). Paraiḥ means "by works other than this one" — the Nārada-pañcarātra and the like; and kiṁ vā is in the sense of a sidelong rebuke (kaṭākṣa): there is no purpose at all in them. And accordingly, when they are purposeless, how can there be purposelessness of this, which has a purpose? This is the import.
Objection: the worship of Bhagavān is their purpose — so how is there purposelessness? Therefore he says īśvara and so on.
आक्षेप: भगवान् की उपासना उनका प्रयोजन है - तो निष्प्रयोजनता कैसे? इसलिए कहते हैं - 'ईश्वर' इत्यादि।
Īśvara — the Supreme Self (Paramātmā), called Vāsudeva, spoken of in the first verse — is, even by those who merely have a wish to hear this work, confined in the heart, bound by the cord of the rasa of love (prema); how much more so by those intent on hearing. And that too not with delay, but rather sadyaḥ (at once), tat-kṣaṇāt (in that very instant) — the use of the two words being to indicate the utmost swiftness. Īśvara means the independent one (svatantra), and His confining (avarodhana) is the placing of Him at one's own control; and that too not in a vast place, but rather in one's own heart, an exceedingly contracted place; and that too by the mere wish to hear. How great an eminence is this that can be told! So then, is the deity-portion (devatā-kāṇḍa) of the Pañcarātra and the like wholly unneeded, its undertaking thus in vain? — Thus runs the doubt.
Therefore he says kṛtibhiḥ (by the skilled): the skilled (kṛtinaḥ) are the adept, those clever in the relishing of rasa. And accordingly, that other deity-portion is fit to be taken up by the tasteless and the unskilled (nīrasa, akṛtin) — so there is no purposelessness in its undertaking. This is the import.
इसलिए कहते हैं - 'कृतिभिः'। 'कृतिनः' अर्थात् कुशल, रस-भावना में चतुर। और इस प्रकार, वह अन्य देवता-काण्ड नीरस और अकुशल लोगों के लिए उपादेय है - इसलिए उसके आरम्भ की व्यर्थता नहीं है - यह भाव है।
Here, with śuśrūṣubhiḥ (by those wishing to hear), since the genitive is prohibited by "na lokāvyaya-niṣṭhā-khal-arthatṛnām" and the like in the construction with a kṛt-suffix, the accusative as object would have obtained; yet although it could have been said imaṁ śuśrūṣubhiḥ (those wishing to hear this, accusative), the locative atra (here) indicates that this fruit arises by mere being-a-domain (viṣayatā), in whatever manner. For in the use of the accusative, since the Pāṇinian rule "kartur īpsitatamaṁ karma" (the object is what the agent most desires) is recalled, there would be the erroneous notion that this fruit arises only when there is the state of being most desired. And thus, in dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitava the non-mention of a verb-word is to indicate that dharma culminates here itself in every manner; likewise, in vāstavam the non-mention of an agent-word is to indicate universal eligibility, without distinction. Thus the deficiency of a word (nyūna-padatā) is not a fault.
And thus it is suggested that in this work Bhagavān, devotion to Bhagavān, the Bhāgavata dharma that is the means to it, and the Bhāgavatas who practise it are all set forth. And accordingly, because of its supremacy over all śāstras, this alone is always to be heard. This is the import.
और इस प्रकार, इस ग्रन्थ में भगवान्, भगवद्-भक्ति, उसके साधनभूत भागवत-धर्म, और उसके अनुष्ठाता भागवत - ये प्रतिपादित हैं, यह ध्वनित है। और इस प्रकार, सर्व-शास्त्रों की अपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ होने के कारण, यही सदा श्रवण करने योग्य है - यह भाव है।
Since the Śrī Bhāgavata has the form of a śāstra, and since śāstras display what is beneficial and harmful for the jīva, Viśvanātha gladdens listeners who are despondent through their inability to ascertain who is qualified with respect to the beneficial and the harmful, plainly stating in the verse beginning dharmaḥ that from this very Bhāgavata the essence among all things, the supreme essential entity, is to be attained by all in the Lord. Here, in the glorious Bhāgavata, the Lord — the truth that is the shelter, Śrī Kṛṣṇa — is to be attained by those of merit (kṛti), that is, only by the envy-free (nirmatsara), who are the qualified ones with the characteristics stated in that verse. Such is the meaning.
By hearing and the rest, He is at once confined in the heart, that is, brought under control: thus love (premā) is indicated, for He is subdued by love alone — as in "By the cord of affection His lotus feet are held fast" [Bhā.Pu. 11.12.55], and in passages such as "Yoga does not confine Me" [Bhā.Pu. 11.12.1] and the like. And therefore it is said "by those wishing to hear, from that very moment" (tat-kṣaṇāt). Beginning from that very moment the desire to hear them would also arise; so even before faith there would be love in the hearing — how much more when faith is present? Such is the import. As in the Padma Purāṇa: "Even once chanted, whether with faith or in jest, O best of the Bhṛgus, the name of Kṛṣṇa would deliver any mere man" — and the like. For so it has been said, in the context of the inconceivability of the power of supramundane things: "Where there is even the slightest connection with such things, for the pure-minded it leads to the birth of bhāva (devotional emotion)" [Bha.Ra.Si. 1.2.110]; thus, that the mind is made steady in the Lord — just this is declared to be the supreme goal of human life.
Here the meaning is that the Lord is confined within the mind. Therefore, given His inability to depart and that confining at once even without faith, it is understood that somewhere there is this great science which draws Śrī Kṛṣṇa near.
यहाँ अर्थ यह है कि ईश्वर मन में अवरुद्ध हो जाता है। अतः उनके निकल जाने की असामर्थ्य, तथा वह अवरोधन तुरन्त ही श्रद्धा के बिना भी होना - इससे समझा जाता है कि कहीं यह श्रीकृष्ण को आकर्षित करने वाली महाविद्या है।
Here, by the two words "by those of merit" (kṛtibhiḥ) and "at once" (sadyaḥ), it is obtained that for those not of merit it is not at once, but with some delay. By the statements "Drink, O tasteful ones" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.3] and "he spoke out of compassion for those bound in saṁsāra" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.3], both are qualified here. By a double meaning, "of Him" means of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and "in an instant" (kṣaṇāt) means by reason of a festival of joy. Because of His confinement by a heart full of love, supreme bliss arises for Him; so, with the intent of His happiness, the characteristic of the qualified one is stated by means of love.
Hence, what use are other śāstras, or the practices taught in them? There is no fruit whatever from them. Such is the meaning.
अतः अन्य शास्त्रों से, अथवा उनमें कहे गए साधनों से क्या प्रयोजन? कोई भी फल नहीं मिलता - ऐसा अर्थ है।
Thus the excellence of this śāstra's purpose has been stated; he states the excellence also in the author with mahā-muniḥ — Śrī Bhagavān — for the śruti says, "Having become a sage, He, the glorious Lord, reflected." When it was first made by him and revealed in brief in the form of the four-verse essence — as stated in "For whom, by whom this incomparable work was set forth" [Bhā.Pu. 12.13.19] — thereafter it was revealed in full.
What is known here through hearing and the rest? In response to this expectation he says vedyam: the real entity (vāstavam vastu), which is fixed at the beginning, middle, and end, is to be known; but it is so for the envy-free, since by repetition of hearing and the rest envy is indeed removed — therefore even they should not fail to make effort here. Even on that view, vedyam means "fit to be known," this being obtained from the sense of the word. Such is the import. And that entity is the Lord's own form, His name, form, qualities, and the rest, and the abodes such as Vaikuṇṭha, and the devotees, and devotion; while everything else — the world and so on — is a secondary, unsteady entity. When this meaning is obtained, a distinction is also taught: namely that, although Vaikuṇṭha and the like and the world and the like are both entities, they differ by being real and unreal. And from that it follows that what is false — like a sky-flower and the like — is alone a non-entity.
What would result from knowing it? To that he says śivadam (the bestower of blessing). Both fruits are shown: the intended fruit, namely becoming an associate of the Lord like one who has love, and the unintended fruit, namely liberation as the destruction of the three miseries.
उसके जानने से क्या होगा? इस पर वे 'शिवदम्' अर्थात् कल्याण देने वाला कहते हैं। अनुसंहित फल - अर्थात् प्रेमी जन के समान पार्षदत्व - तथा अननुसंहित फल - अर्थात् तीनों तापों का विनाश रूप मोक्ष - दोनों ही दिखाए गए हैं।
What is to be practiced here? In response to this expectation he says dharmaḥ: that in which the deceit, characterized by an aim at fruit, has been thoroughly cast off — being eminently cast off — thus the path of fruitive action joined with desire is excluded; and by the prefix pra- the aim at liberation too is rejected, and desireless action, the path of knowledge with its limbs such as tranquility and self-restraint, and the eightfold yoga are all excluded. By paramaḥ — because it is the best of all, the easiest of all, and not to be discarded even when the fruit is attained — pure bhakti-yoga alone is stated; thus the truth of the subject matter (abhidheya) is shown in particular.
Since the following verse says "That indeed is the supreme dharma for men" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.6], here it is to be known that mere humanity itself is the qualification. Likewise, the threefold utterance of the word atra (here) is for the sake of emphatic determination: here alone is the Lord confined, not elsewhere; here alone is the real entity to be known, not elsewhere; here alone is the dharma in which deceit is wholly cast off, not elsewhere — thus excluding conjunction with any other. And the word atra, beginning with "is indeed confined," is to be known as excluding non-conjunction.
To turn toward this Bhāgavata those listeners who are bewildered by having heard many śāstras and by the many means and ends those śāstras teach, the author states the all-surpassing excellence of this śāstra in the two verses beginning dvābhyām. Among these, in the verse beginning dharmaḥ he establishes that excellence on two grounds: the excellence of what is expressed and the excellence of what expresses it.
Here, on account of the word śrīmati taken as the topic and on account of the placement of the word, the supreme and highest dharma is defined within the lovely Bhāgavata; and that dharma comprises both the agnihotra and the like, and the hearing, chanting, and the like.
यहाँ विषय रूप में 'श्रीमति' शब्द के होने से और शब्द-विन्यास के कारण मनोहर भागवत में परम, श्रेष्ठ धर्म का निरूपण किया गया है; और वह धर्म अग्निहोत्र आदि तथा श्रवण-कीर्तन आदि है।
To establish this supremacy, the qualifier in the word beginning projjhita is given. That dharma in which the deceit — namely, the intention fixed upon a fruit — is projjhita, wholly cast off, is so called. The fruit here is, in sequence, heaven and the like, and the worldly happiness and lordship of those realms other than Kṛṣṇa. It should be understood, however, that the intention fixed upon the fruit of purification of the heart and upon Kṛṣṇa is indeed present.
Because śrīmat-tva — the state of being glorious — is subordinated within the compound, there is no fault of an unexamined predicate-portion (avimṛṣṭa-vidheya), since it functions here as a name of this kind; but the expression kvacid bhāgavatam, "somewhere, the Bhāgavata," is to be understood on the analogy of bhāmā and the like.
समास में 'श्रीमत्त्व' के गौण हो जाने के कारण 'अविमृष्ट-विधेयांश' दोष नहीं है, क्योंकि यह इस प्रकार का नाम है; परन्तु 'क्वचिद् भागवतम्' यह उक्ति 'भामा' आदि के समान समझनी चाहिए।
Here the real entity (vastu) too is defined: it is the unchanging entity, devoid of transformation both in its own nature and in its qualities. This rests on a Vaiṣṇava statement: "That which, even with the passage of time, does not assume another designation arisen from transformation and the like — that, O king, is the entity. And what is that?"
यहाँ वास्तविक वस्तु का भी निरूपण किया गया है: कूटस्थ अर्थात् स्वरूप से और गुण से परिणाम-रहित वस्तु। जैसा कि वैष्णव वचन है — 'जो काल बीतने पर भी परिणाम आदि से उत्पन्न दूसरी संज्ञा को नहीं प्राप्त होती — हे राजन्! वही वस्तु है; और वह क्या है?'
Of that entity, what is real (vāstavam) is its eternal manifestation, characterized as the realm called Paravyoma, and the glorious abode of Gokula and the like together with its associates. Saying what kind of thing this is, he states that it is to be known by the truthful who are free from envy and free from egotism — so that the envious have no principal eligibility for it.
उस वस्तु का नित्य-विभूति-स्वरूप, परव्योम नामक धाम तथा सपरिकर श्रीमद्गोकुल आदि धाम वास्तविक है; और वह कैसा है, यह कहते हुए वे कहते हैं — 'मत्सर-रहित, अहंकार-रहित सत्पुरुषों के द्वारा जानने योग्य', अर्थात् मत्सरियों का मुख्य अधिकार नहीं है।
Then what does it accomplish? To this he states śivadam, "the uprooting of the three miseries": when meditated upon, it destroys without remainder the three miseries beginning with the ādhyātmika, and it bestows one's own auspicious nature — the meaning being that it bestows the supreme goal of human life.
तो फिर क्या? इसलिए वे कहते हैं — 'शिवदं तापत्रयोन्मूलनम्' अर्थात् ध्यान किये जाने पर यह आध्यात्मिक आदि तापत्रय का निरवशेष रूप से उन्मूलन करने वाला विनाशक है तथा मंगल-रूप अपने स्वरूप का प्रदाता है; अर्थात् वह परम पुरुषार्थ का प्रदायी है, यह अर्थ है।
Saying here of what kind it is, he states the word beginning mahā-muni. From the statement "having become a muni, he reflected," the great muni is Bhagavān. The meaning is that it was made manifest by Him — in the form of Nārāyaṇa in brief, and in the form of Vyāsa at length.
यहाँ वह कैसा है, यह कहते हुए वे 'महा-मुनि' से कहते हैं — 'वह मुनि होकर सम्यक् विचार करने लगा' इस श्रवण से महा-मुनि भगवान् हैं। अर्थ यह है कि उनके द्वारा — नारायण-रूप से संक्षेप में और व्यास-रूप से विस्तार से — यह प्रकट किया गया।
Now, why is the means-and-end not defined here, as it is in other śāstras? To this he replies in the words beginning kiṁ vā: what use, then, is there in those śāstras whose fruits perish, and in the means stated in them?
अब प्रश्न है — अन्य शास्त्रों की भाँति यहाँ साध्य-साधन का निरूपण क्यों नहीं किया गया? इस पर वे 'किं वा' से कहते हैं — तो फिर उन नश्वर-फल वाले शास्त्रों से और उनमें कहे गये साधनों से क्या प्रयोजन?
But here, even by those who merely wish to hear, who desire to listen — and how much more by those who have actually heard — Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Lord and controller of all, yet himself the very principle of refuge, is bound within the heart by them in whom love has at once arisen; the meaning is that He is brought under control by the relish of love at that very moment, with no interval of time.
Or else it may be understood thus: tasya means "of Him," of Kṛṣṇa; kṣaṇāt means "from a cause that gives delight" — so that by a heart full of love there is a confinement of Him that produces His own supreme bliss, just as the bee is confined within the lotus-bud.
अथवा — 'तस्य' अर्थात् कृष्ण का, और 'क्षणात्' अर्थात् उत्सव-हेतु से — इस प्रकार प्रेममय हृदय से उनका अवरोध उनके परम आनन्द को उत्पन्न करने वाला है, जैसे कमल-कोश से भ्रमर का अवरोध; ऐसा समझना चाहिए।
If it is so, then why do not all people hear this? To this he replies in the word beginning kṛtibhiḥ — meaning by those skilled in the company of the saintly. The sense is that, without the company of the saintly, this is hard to obtain.
यदि ऐसा है, तो सब इसे क्यों नहीं सुनते? इस पर वे 'कृतिभिः' से कहते हैं, अर्थात् सत्संग में कुशल जनों के द्वारा। अर्थ यह है कि सत्संग के बिना यह दुर्लभ है।
Because iha and atra are taken up three times, no fault of a redundantly repeated word is to be apprehended, since the repetition serves the purpose of determinate specification; and through the exclusion of conjunction with anything else (anyayoga-vyavaccheda), it conveys that the three meanings to be explained are here alone and nowhere else.
'इह' और 'अत्र' के तीन बार ग्रहण किये जाने से कथित-पदत्व (पुनरुक्ति) का दोष आशंकनीय नहीं है, क्योंकि वह निर्धारण के प्रयोजन के लिए है; तथा अन्ययोग-व्यवच्छेद के कारण — कि व्याख्येय तीनों अर्थ यहीं हैं, अन्यत्र नहीं।
Thus the excellence of this śāstra has been shown: from the excellence of what is expressed — the supreme dharma, such an entity to be known, and the devotion that brings Bhagavān under control — and from the excellence of the great muni who is the one expressing it. And precisely because it is of this kind, this is to be heard by all.
परम धर्म की, ऐसी जानने योग्य वस्तु की, और भगवान् को वशीभूत करने वाली भक्ति की — जो वाच्य हैं — उत्कृष्टता से, तथा प्रकाशक महा-मुनि की उत्कृष्टता से, शास्त्र की वह उत्कृष्टता दिखायी गयी है; और ऐसा होने के कारण ही यह सबके द्वारा श्रवणीय है।
