san after kaṇḍūya- (kaṇḍūyati). When, by sanyaṅoḥ (SK 2395), doubling of the first single-vowelled portion (ekāc) obtains, it should be stated that for kaṇḍvādi [bases doubling is] of the third (vārttika). → kaṇḍūyiyiṣati.

san after a kyac-final [base]: "In nāmadhātus (denominative dhātus), as one wishes" (vārttika). The meaning is: doubling of any one of the first three [ekāc portions]. For one beginning with a vowel (ajādi), however, [doubling is] of [one of these] other than the first. [From putrīya-:] puputrīyiṣati — putitrīyiṣati — putrīyiyiṣati. [From aśvīya-:] aśiśvīyiṣati — aśvīyiyiṣati.

The prohibition of doubling for n, d and r standing in a conjunct holds only for one that immediately follows a vowel (ac). san after indrīya- (indrīyati): doubling of either the portion drī or the portion yi → indidrīyiṣati — indrīyiyiṣati. [From candrīya-:] cicandrīyiṣati — candidrīyiṣati — candrīyiyiṣati.

"He wishes to call [someone] priya ('dear'), or to prompt one who calls [someone] priya": piprāpayiṣati — prāpipayiṣati — prāpayiyiṣati. [In the same way, with] uru(m): vivārayiṣati — vārirayiṣati — vārayiyiṣati. [With] bāḍha(m): the three forms sisādhayiṣati and so on; but there is no ṣ-substitution (ṣatva).

"san after [a base] ending in yaṅ, san and ṇi": bobhūyiṣayiṣati. ṇic after [a base] ending in yaṅ, ṇic and san: bobhūyayiṣati, etc.

translator notes
  • translator The two vārttika labels follow the source's '(vā)' markers. In 'kyajantāt san yatheṣṭaṃ nāmadhātuṣu (vā)' the words 'kyajantāt san' are taken as a heading, parallel to 'kaṇḍūyateḥ san' and 'indrīyateḥ san', and the vārttika as 'yatheṣṭaṃ nāmadhātuṣu'. The syntax also allows the whole to be the vārttika. 'sanyaṅoḥ' (SK 2395) is A 6.1.9, with 'ekāco dve prathamasya' (A 6.1.1) as the rule whose 'first ekāc' is being displaced.
  • translator The n-d-r sentence narrows 'na ndrāḥ saṃyogādayaḥ' (A 6.1.3, SK 2446), which the kaumudī paraphrases there as 'acaḥ parāḥ saṃyogādayo nadarā dvir na bhavanti'. Here it means that in indrīya- and candrīya- only the n that immediately follows the vowel escapes doubling, while the d is doubled. Hence indi-drīyiṣati and candi-drīyiṣati. This explanation is the translator's; the text gives only the forms.
  • translator The text does not derive the ṇic bases prāpaya-, vāraya- and sādhaya-. They presuppose priya → pra and uru → vara (A 6.4.157, SK 2016) and bāḍha → sādha (A 5.3.63, SK 2014) before a nominal ṇic in the sense given by the quoted gloss. The accusatives 'uruṃ' and 'bāḍhaṃ' in the source take up the construction of that gloss ('priyam ākhyātum …'), so they are rendered 'uru(m)', 'bāḍha(m)' with 'in the same way' supplied.
  • textual The source joins 'candrīyiyiṣati-priyam ākhyātum ācakṣāṇaṃ prerayituṃ vecchati' with a hyphen, as if the gloss continued the candrīya- series. The gloss evidently introduces the priya forms that follow and is translated so. The source is not repunctuated.
  • textual The last sentence heads 'yaṅṇicsannantāṇ ṇic' (ṇic after a yaṅ-ṇic-san-final base) but cites 'bobhūyayiṣati', which is the form of the yaṅ-ṇic-san-final base itself, without the final ṇic. The expected form would be bobhūyayiṣayati. The 'etc.' (ityādi) may be meant to cover it. The source is translated as it stands and not emended.
