द्वन्द्वसमासप्रकरणम्

Covers SK 901–930 (30 sūtras), Aṣṭādhyāyī 2.2.29 and 2.2.31–34 — the dvandva definition and its pūrvanipāta rules — together with the ekavadbhāva block 2.4.2–16, the member-final substitutions of 6.3.25–32 (with the ṣatva rule 8.3.82 spliced in), and the samāsānta ṭac of 5.4.106. All numbers present.

dvandva-samāsa-prakaraṇa — outline (p20, SK 901–930, all 30 sūtras)

Forming the co-ordinative compound (dvandva): several sup-ending words standing in the sense of ca compound into one, and the compound comes in two shapes — the itaretarayoga (the members taken together, dual/plural, gender by the last member: dhavakhadirau) and the samāhāra (the members as one group, singular and neuter: saṃjñāparibhāṣam). SK runs the prakaraṇa in four strands: (i) the defining rule cārthe dvandvaḥ with the pūrvanipāta rules that decide which member comes first (902–905); (ii) the long ekavadbhāva block of 2.4.2–16 (906–920), which in SK's reading is a set of niyamas — for these classes of members the dvandva is samāhāra only (906–915), for those optionally so (916–917), and for a few not at all or with the restriction lifted (918–920); (iii) the member-final substitutions of 6.3.25–32 — ānaṅ for a final ṛ and in deity-dvandvas, the ī / i / ṣ complex on agni, dyāvā / divas for div, uṣāsā for uṣas, mātarapitarau — with the ṣatva rule 8.3.82 (924) spliced in where SK needs it for agnīṣomau; and (iv) the samāsānta ṭac after a cu/d/ṣ/h-final samāhāra-dvandva (930). The neuter of the samāhāra is supplied by sa napuṃsakam (SK 821, 2.4.17) and the "ekavat" of 906ff. by anuvṛtti from dvigur ekavacanam (SK 731, 2.4.1), both from the preceding prakaraṇa. Ordering: strict SK order throughout; groups are cut at the strand boundaries.

A. What makes a dvandva — the four senses of ca, and the two shapes the compound takes — running example: dhavaś ca khadiraś ca → dhavakhadirau / saṃjñā ca paribhāṣā ca → saṃjñāparibhāṣam

B. Which member stands first — pūrvanipāta in the dvandva — running example: hariś ca haraś ca → hariharau; indraś ca agniś ca → indrāgnī

C. Obligatory ekavadbhāva — for these member-classes the dvandva is samāhāra only — running example: pāṇī ca pādau ca → pāṇipādam

D. Optional ekavadbhāva, and where the "samāhāra only" restriction is lifted — running example: gāvaś ca mahiṣāś ca → gomahiṣam / gomahiṣāḥ

E. ānaṅ on the prior member — the ṛ-final relatives and the deity-dvandva — running example: mātā ca pitā ca → mātāpitarau; mitraś ca varuṇaś ca → mitrāvaruṇau

F. agni before its partners — the ī / ṣ / i complex — running example: agniś ca somaś ca → agnīṣomau; agnāmarutau devate asya → āgnimārutam

G. The stem-substitutes div → dyāvā / divas, uṣas → uṣāsā, and the northern mātarapitarau — running example: dyauś ca pṛthivī ca → dyāvāpṛthivyau / divaspṛthivyau

H. The samāsānta ṭac on a consonant-final samāhāra-dvandva — running example: vāk ca tvak ca → vāktvacam
