चार्थे द्वन्द्वः ॥ ९०१ ॥
cārthe dvandvaḥ
cārthe dvandvaḥ — [Several sup-ending words standing] in the sense of ca [are optionally compounded; that compound is termed] dvandva.

Rule. Several nouns (more than one, aneka), each ending in a case-ending (subanta), that stand in the sense of ca "and", are optionally compounded. The compound is named dvandva. The word subanta is carried forward by anuvṛtti from subāmantrite (A 2.1.2), as read into SK 649, and aneka from the bahuvrīhi rule (A 2.2.24), so the rule reads "several nouns, in the sense of ca".

Example.

dhavaś ca khadiraś ca "a dhava and a khadira" → the two are taken together → compound, drop the case-endings → dhava + khadira → add the dual ending → dhavakhadirau.

saṃjñā ca paribhāṣā ca "the saṃjñā-rules and the paribhāṣā-rules" → the two are named as one body → compound → saṃjñā + paribhāṣā → the group is one thing, so the ending is singular, and the compound is neuter by SK 821 → saṃjñāparibhāṣam.

Applies when / blocked by. Ca has four senses, and the rule works in only two of them.

  • Samuccaya, "aggregation": several items, each independent of the other, are joined to one and the same verb. īśvaraṃ guruṃ ca bhajasva "worship the Lord, and the guru" — the verb is understood twice, once with each object. No compound.
  • Anvācaya, "incidental addition": one of the two items is only incidental. bhikṣām aṭa gāṃ cānaya "go for alms; and bring the cow (if one turns up)". No compound.
  • Itaretarayoga, "mutual connection": the items are construed together, as a pair or set. dhavakhadirau. Compound; the number is dual or plural, and the gender is that of the last member.
  • Samāhāra, "collective": the group itself is what is named. saṃjñāparibhāṣam. Compound; the number is singular and the gender neuter.

In the first two senses there is no compound because the words lack the capacity to compound (asāmarthya): they are not construed with each other, only each with the verb. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators put it this way: a compound needs its members to share one meaning, as the members of a bahuvrīhi share the thing they describe; items merely listed side by side do not.

The word aneka, "more than one", licenses a dvandva of any number of members: hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ "the hotṛ, the potṛ, the neṣṭṛ and the udgātṛ (priests)". One may instead compound each pair and then compound the two pairs: hotāpotārau + neṣṭodgātārau → hotāpotāneṣṭodgātāraḥ. Why the two forms differ (the ā in hotā) is taught at SK 921.

Watch out. A dvandva is always optional: the sentence dhavaś ca khadiraś ca remains correct beside dhavakhadirau. And the same pair of words can be either shape; which one you are reading is told by the ending — dual or plural for the pair, singular neuter for the group.

Several (aneka) sup-ending words standing in the sense of ca are optionally compounded; that [compound] is a dvandva. The senses of ca are samuccaya (aggregation), anvācaya (subordinate addition), itaretarayoga (mutual connection), and samāhāra (collective). Samuccaya is the construction of several [items], each independent of the other, with one [and the same word]. Anvācaya is [the same] when one of the two is incidental (ānuṣaṅgika). Itaretarayoga is the construction of [items] taken together (milita). Samāhāra is a group (samūha). Among these, in samuccaya — as in īśvaraṃ guruṃ ca bhajasva 'worship the Lord, and the guru' — and in anvācaya — as in bhikṣām aṭa gāṃ cānaya 'go for alms, and bring the cow' — there is no compound, because of the absence of capacity (asāmarthya). dhavakhadirau 'a dhava and a khadira [tree]' [itaretarayoga]. saṃjñāparibhāṣam 'the saṃjñā [rules] and the paribhāṣā [rules, as a group]' [samāhāra]. Because 'aneka' is stated, hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ 'the hotṛ, the potṛ, the neṣṭṛ and the udgātṛ [priests]'. But when a dvandva is made of each pair and then a dvandva [of the two dvandvas] is made again, hotāpotāneṣṭodgātāraḥ.

translator notes
  • commentary BM: 'sup' is carried forward (anuvṛtti) from 'subāmantrite' (A 2.1.2) and 'anekam' from 'anekam anyapadārthe' (A 2.2.24); 'samāsaḥ' and 'vibhāṣā' are the governing adhikāras — this is what 'anekaṃ subantaṃ … vā samasyate' unpacks; followed.
  • commentary BM reads 'ekasmin' as 'in one verb-word (kriyāpada), repeated (āvṛtta)': in samuccaya each uncompounded pada construes in turn with the same verb, so 'īśvaraṃ guruṃ ca bhajasva' resolves into two sentences; 'anyatarasya ānuṣaṅgikatve' = one pada construes with the verb only incidentally, the other as the actual object ('go for alms; if a cow turns up, bring it too'). TB agrees: alms-seeking is the principal act, cow-bringing incidental. Rendered accordingly.
  • commentary TB glosses 'asāmarthyāt' as 'because of the absence of ekārthībhāva': dvandva members must be included in the ca-sense as bahuvrīhi members are in the karma etc.; mutually independent items (samuccaya, anvācaya) cannot achieve this, whereas itaretarayoga and samāhāra have mutual association (sāhitya). BM says the same (no mutual construal, hence asāmarthya). Followed in rendering 'asāmarthya' as absence of capacity, not mere 'incapability'.
  • commentary BM on the two examples: in itaretarayoga the association (sāhitya) qualifies the substances (dhavakhadirau = the two taken together); in samāhāra the group is the qualified item (saṃjñāparibhāṣam = the group of the two), hence singular (the samāhāra is one) and neuter by 'sa napuṃsakam'. TB: in itaretarayoga sāhitya is the qualifier and the dravya the qualified; in samāhāra sāhitya is principal. The bracketed labels [itaretarayoga]/[samāhāra] follow this.
  • commentary BM on 'anekokteḥ': answers the objection that the anuvṛtti of 'supsupā' alone would yield dhavakhadirau and 'aneka' is idle — 'aneka' secures a dvandva of more than two. In hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ only neṣṭṛ takes ānaṅ by 'ānaṅ ṛto dvandve' (A 6.3.25), since only it is directly followed by the uttarapada; hotṛ and potṛ are separated from it by a middle pada (TB: same). In the alternative: hotā ca potā ca → hotāpotārau (ānaṅ for hotṛ); neṣṭā ca udgātā ca → neṣṭodgātārau (ānaṅ for neṣṭṛ); then dvandva of the two dvandvas, hotāpotṛ taking ānaṅ before the uttarapada neṣṭodgātṛ → hotāpotāneṣṭodgātāraḥ; ṅ of ānaṅ is it, so it replaces the final; a is for pronunciation; n is dropped by pada-hood relying on the internal vibhakti. These intermediate forms are BM's, not the Kaumudī's.
  • commentary TB adds (not in the Kaumudī): nīlotpalam etc. do not become dvandva despite a ca-vigraha, because the tatpuruṣa saṃjñā prescribed for coreference by 'viśeṣaṇaṃ viśeṣyeṇa…' blocks the dvandva saṃjñā, which has scope in non-coreferential cases; where non-coreference is intended, dvandva (as in pramāṇaprameya) is welcome. Recorded for later comparison; not translated.

राजदन्तादिषु परम् ॥ ९०२ ॥
rājadantādiṣu param
rājadantādiṣu param — In [the compounds] rājadanta and the rest, [the member that would otherwise be placed first] stands after.

Rule. In the compounds of the rājadanta list, the member that would deserve first place by upasarjanaṃ pūrvam (SK 654) is placed second instead. The word upasarjana is carried forward from that rule.

Example.

dantānāṃ rājā "the king of the teeth (the chief tooth)" → danta is the genitive member, the upasarjana, and should go first → but the pair is in the list → rājadantaḥ, with danta second.

Applies when / blocked by. The list is an ākṛtigaṇa, an open list. It holds tatpuruṣas such as rājadantaḥ and also dvandvas; Bhaṭṭoji's commentators cite viṣvaksenārjunau, in which arjuna, due first by SK 904, goes second. That is why the rule is placed in the dvandva chapter.

A vārttika, dharmādiṣv aniyamaḥ: in the pairs dharma and the rest there is no fixed order — arthadharmau or dharmārthau "wealth and duty". (Whether this statement is a vārttika or a line of the list itself, scholars discuss.)

The same list gives dampatī, jampatī and jāyāpatī "wife and husband": for the word jāyā the substitutes dam and jam are set down by nipātana, optionally, so all three forms are correct. Here pati, though the more honoured member, is placed second.

  • commentary BM: 'upasarjanaṃ pūrvam' (A 2.2.30) is carried forward (anuvartate) into this rule; 'upasarjanam' is to be supplied before 'pūrvaprayogārham'. In rājadantaḥ the word danta, though upasarjana as the non-principal member of the ṣaṣṭhī-tatpuruṣa, is placed after. Followed in the bracketed supplement.
  • commentary TB and BM each explain why this rule, whose gaṇa contains tatpuruṣas (rājadanta, agrevaṇa) as well as dvandvas, is placed in the dvandva section. TB: on account of arthadharmau and the like. BM: because the gaṇa lists dvandvas such as viṣvaksenārjuna alongside the tatpuruṣas; BM adds that in viṣvaksenārjunau arjuna, due for prior placement by ajādyadantam (A 2.2.33), is placed after.
  • commentary BM identifies 'dharmādiṣv aniyamaḥ' as a gaṇa-sūtra (not a vārttika proper) and glosses aniyama as prior placement of either member; the source marks the block as a vārttika and it is labelled accordingly.
  • commentary BM on 'nipātyate': the rājadanta-class is optional (pākṣika), and [in dampatī etc.] pati is placed after although it is the more honoured (abhyarhita) member. On ākṛtigaṇa: in the Vṛtti the whole gaṇa is read out.

dvandve ghi
dvandve ghi — In a dvandva, [the member] bearing the designation ghi [is placed first].

Rule. In a dvandva, the member that bears the name ghi — a stem ending in short i or short u — is placed first. The word pūrvam "first" is carried forward from SK 654.

Example.

hariś ca haraś ca "Hari and Hara" → hari ends in short i, so it is ghi → hari goes first → hariharau.

  • commentary BM: 'pūrvam' is carried forward (anuvṛtti) from 'upasarjanaṃ pūrvam' (A 2.2.30); that is what 'pūrvaṃ syāt' spells out. In hariharau, hari is placed first because it is ghi.
  • commentary BM (TB agrees): in hariharaguravaḥ both hari and guru are ghi; the vārttika restricts prior placement to one ghi member, and for the remaining ghi member there is no restriction (vikalpa) — hence hara and guru may stand in either order, giving the two forms hariguruharāḥ / hariharaguravaḥ. Both read the vārttika on the jāti-pakṣa (the rule operates once on the class, not per individual).

ajādyadantam
ajādyadantam — [In a dvandva] a member beginning with a vowel (ac) and ending in a [is placed first].

Rule. In a dvandva, a member that begins with a vowel (ac) and ends in a is placed first.

Example.

īśa + kṛṣṇa "Īśa and Kṛṣṇa" → īśa begins with a vowel and ends in a → īśa goes first → īśakṛṣṇau. Kṛṣṇa ends in a too, but it does not begin with a vowel, so it has no claim.

Applies when / blocked by. Among many members there is no restriction: aśvarathendrāḥ or indrāśvarathāḥ "horses, chariots and Indra".

A vārttika, ghyantād ajādyadantaṃ vipratiṣedhena: when this rule and SK 903 both claim first place, this rule wins by vipratiṣedha, the principle that in a conflict of two rules the later one prevails (A 1.4.2). indraś ca agniś ca → agni is ghi (SK 903), indra is vowel-initial and a-final (SK 904) → SK 904 wins → indrāgnī "Indra and Agni".

translator notes
  • commentary BM: 'idam' means a word that is a-final on condition of being vowel-initial; in īśakṛṣṇau kṛṣṇa, though a-final, is not vowel-initial and so is not placed first. 'bahuṣv aniyamaḥ' is completed with 'vaktavyaḥ' (is to be stated).
  • commentary BM: 'ghyanta' stands for the sūtra 'dvandve ghi' (A 2.2.32), the ablative construing with an elided lyap (having set that rule aside); by the vipratiṣedha rule (A 1.4.2) ajādyadantam prevails over dvandve ghi, hence indrāgnī rather than prior placement of the ghi word agni. Followed.
  • commentary TB adds that this word-order section is not invariable (anitya), citing Pāṇini's own orders in 'samudrābhrād ghaḥ' and 'lakṣaṇahetvoḥ kriyāyāḥ' and Bhāravi's 'sauṣṭhavaudārya-'; not reflected in the kaumudī English.

alpāctaram
alpāctaram — [In a dvandva, the member] having fewer vowels (ac) [is placed first].

Rule. In a dvandva, the member with fewer vowels (ac) is placed first.

Example.

śiva + keśava "Śiva and Keśava" → śiva has two vowels, keśava three → śivakeśavau.

Applies when / blocked by. The affix tarap "-er" in alpāctaram does not imply a comparison of exactly two; it is set down by nipātana in its own sense (svārthika), so the rule also decides the order in dvandvas of many members. Five vārttikas add further tests:

  • ṛtunakṣatrāṇāṃ samākṣarāṇām ānupūrvyeṇa: names of seasons and of lunar asterisms that have the same number of syllables stand in their natural sequence — hemantāśiśiravasantāḥ "winter, cool season, spring" (so printed; the commentators read hemantaśiśira-); kṛttikārohiṇyau "Kṛttikā and Rohiṇī". Why "of the same number of syllables"? grīṣmavasantau "summer and spring": the counts differ, so this rule does not apply and grīṣma, with fewer vowels, goes first by SK 905 itself.
  • laghvakṣaraṃ pūrvam: the member whose vowel is light (laghu, a short vowel) goes first — kuśakāśam "kuśa and kāśa grass"; kuśa has short u, kāśa long ā.
  • abhyarhitaṃ ca: the more honoured member goes first — tāpasaparvatau "the ascetic and the mountain".
  • varṇānām ānupūrvyeṇa: names of the social classes (varṇa) stand in their order — brāhmaṇakṣatriyaviṭśūdrāḥ.
  • bhrātur jyāyasaḥ: the elder brother's name goes first — yudhiṣṭhirārjunau "Yudhiṣṭhira and Arjuna".

Watch out. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators observe that these later tests set aside SK 903 and SK 904 where they conflict, so that the honoured member goes first even when the other member is ghi or vowel-initial; scholars discuss this.

translator notes
  • commentary BM and TB: alpāc = 'having few vowels'; the affix tarap is svārthika by nipātana (so no comparison between exactly two is implied — TB: otherwise the rule could not govern bahu-member dvandvas such as dhavakhadirapalāśāḥ). Rendered 'having fewer vowels' without a two-term comparison.
  • textual Source reads hemantāśiśiravasantāḥ (long ā after hemant-); BM's pratīka reads hemantaśiśira-. The long vowel is probably a digitization slip; the transmitted form is kept.
  • commentary BM: in grīṣmavasantau the syllable counts differ, so the sequence rule does not place vasanta first; grīṣma, having fewer vowels, is placed first by alpāctaram itself. Ānupūrvya of the three seasons and of kṛttikā etc. is the familiar order (TB: by time of onset / of rising).
  • commentary BM: laghvakṣara = that whose vowel (ac) is light — so kuśa (u) precedes kāśa (ā); kuśakāśam is a samāhāra-dvandva.
  • commentary BM: parvata is of immobile (sthāvara) origin, hence tāpasa is the more honoured relative to it; BM notes the Bhāṣya's example is mātāpitarau instead. BM also observes that 'dvandve ghi' and 'ajādyadantam' are set aside by these later (para) rules, while the Bhāṣya holds the alternative view that the honoured member always goes first.

dvandvaśca prāṇitūryasenāṅgānām
dvandvaś ca prāṇitūryasenāṅgānām — And a dvandva of [words for] the parts (aṅga) of living beings, of musical instruments, and of an army [is ekavat, i.e. treated as one].

Rule. A dvandva of words for parts (aṅga) of living beings, for parts of musical instruments, or for parts of an army is ekavat, treated as one. The word aṅga at the end of the sūtra goes with each of the three: parts of a body, parts of musical instruments, parts of an army.

Example.

pāṇī ca pādau ca "hands and feet" → parts of a living body → the dvandva is a samāhāra only → singular → neuter by SK 821 → pāṇipādam.

mārdaṅgika + pāṇavika "mṛdaṅga-players and paṇava-players" → parts of musical instruments (the players who work them) → mārdaṅgikapāṇavikam.

rathika + aśvāroha "chariot-fighters and horsemen" → parts of an army → rathikāśvāroham.

Applies when / blocked by. Since a samāhāra is one already, singularity needs no rule; this section serves as a restriction: for these classes the dvandva is a samāhāra only, never a pair. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators add that the restriction runs one way — it does not say that only these classes may form a samāhāra; any dvandva may, by SK 901. They also read each class with itself: body-parts with body-parts, army-parts with army-parts, not mixed.

Watch out. Dvandva here means the samāhāra-dvandva. A form such as pāṇipādaḥ, a masculine singular of a pair, is not what the rule produces.

The dvandva of these — [of the parts (aṅga) of living beings (prāṇin), of musical instruments (tūrya), and of an army (senā)] — is ekavat (treated as one). pāṇipādam 'hands and feet'. mārdaṅgikapāṇavikam 'mṛdaṅga-players and paṇava-players'. rathikāśvāroham 'chariot-fighters and horsemen'. Since singularity (ekatva) is already established from the fact that the samāhāra (collective) is one, the section (prakaraṇa) serves as a restriction (niyama): so that for the parts of living beings and the rest [the dvandva] should be a samāhāra only.

translator notes
  • commentary BM and TB: the sūtra is a ṣaṣṭhī-samāsa containing a dvandva, and 'aṅga', heard at its end, is construed with each member — parts of living beings, parts of instruments, parts of an army; hence the Kaumudī's 'eṣām'. TB adds that the dvandva is of prāṇyaṅga with prāṇyaṅga only, tūryāṅga with tūryāṅga only, senāṅga with senāṅga only, not crosswise (so not in mārdaṅgikāśvārohau); and that 'aṅga' means a part (avayava) for prāṇin and senā but an auxiliary (upakāraka) for tūrya. The bracketed expansion of 'eṣām' follows this.
  • commentary BM: 'dvandva' here means samāhāra-dvandva, since the vārttika 'samāhāragrahaṇaṃ kartavyam' under the preceding sūtra 'dvigur ekavacanam' (A 2.4.1) is carried forward (anuvṛtti) into this rule too; 'ekavat' unpacks 'ekavacanam', which is carried forward from that sūtra (TB agrees: 'ekavacanam' continues from 'dvigur ekavacanam'; 'ekaṃ vakti' = denoting a samāhāra qualified by oneness, hence the Kaumudī's resulting 'ekavat syāt').
  • commentary Forms (BM, TB agree): pāṇipādam = samāhāra of pāṇi and pāda, ekavat and neuter by 'sa napuṃsakam'; mārdaṅgika, pāṇavika = 'one whose craft is playing the mṛdaṅga/paṇava', ṭhak by 'tad asya śilpam' (A 4.4.55) — the instrument words here denote the players; rathikāḥ = 'those who go by chariot', ṣṭhan by 'parpādibhyaḥ ṣṭhan' (A 4.4.10). Not translated as derivations since the Kaumudī gives only the finished forms.
  • commentary TB on 'samāhāra eva': the restriction runs one way only — for prāṇyaṅga etc. the dvandva is samāhāra only; the converse ('in samāhāra, only prāṇyaṅga etc.') does not hold, because of the plural in 'tiṣyapunarvasvoḥ…' (A 1.2.63), made so that in a samāhāra the dual should not replace the singular; hence samāhāra-dvandvas outside this section also occur, and the later statement 'sarvo dvandvo vibhāṣayaikavad bhavati' is nothing new. BM likewise: 'samāhāra eva' = not itaretarayoga; this and the following sūtras are niyama rules. The placement of 'only' on 'samāhāra' in the last sentence follows this.
  • commentary BM rejects the alternative that the sūtra prescribes ekavattva in an itaretarayoga-dvandva of these (which would yield a masculine singular pāṇipādaḥ), on the ground of the anuvṛtti of the vārttika 'samāhāragrahaṇaṃ kartavyam' and because the Bhāṣya exemplifies only samāhāra-dvandvas throughout this ekavadbhāva section. TB records two views on why 'prāṇi' is stated though 'jātir aprāṇinām' would already cover pāṇipādam: so that ekavadbhāva holds even when the substance is principal (some), or as a niyama excluding a mixed dvandva like prāṇipaṇavau (others). Neither alters the English.
  • textual The BM source repeats the sentence 'iti vigrahaḥ. senāvayavatvād ekavattvam. pūrvavan napuṃsakatvam. nanu samāhāradvandve samāhārasya' (a digitization doubling); the TB block runs on into material on the following sūtras (2.4.3–2.4.5: caraṇānām, stheṇoḥ, udagāt, yajuḥ, padaka, adhyayanataḥ) that belongs to SK 907–909. anuvāde caraṇānām — [A dvandva] of [names of] caraṇas [is treated as singular] in a restatement (anuvāda).

Rule. A dvandva of the names of *caraṇa*s — the schools of Vedic reciters, such as the Kaṭhas and the Kālāpas — is ekavat when used in an anuvāda, a restatement of something already established.

Example.

udagāt kaṭhakālāpam "the Kaṭha-and-Kālāpa (school) has arisen" → the arising is an accomplished fact merely restated → kaṭhakālāpam, singular.

pratyaṣṭhāt kaṭhakauthumam "the Kaṭha-and-Kauthuma (school) has stood firm" → kaṭhakauthumam.

Applies when / blocked by. A vārttika, stheṇor luṅīti vaktavyam, narrows the rule: the singular is to be stated only when the verb is a luṅ (aorist) form of sthā "stand" or of iṇ "go". udagāt is the luṅ of ud-i, pratyaṣṭhāt the luṅ of prati-sthā.

  • commentary BM: caraṇas are the [bodies of] reciters distinguished by śākhā, and the dvandva is of the words denoting them; 'anuvāde' is what 'siddhasyopanyāse' glosses — the presentation of a matter already understood (avagatārtha). Followed.
  • commentary BM: the singular 'luṅi' is construed distributively with each root — the singular treatment is to be stated only when a luṅ-form of sthā or a luṅ-form of iṇ is actually used.
  • commentary BM: udagāt is the luṅ of iṇ ('appeared, arose'); pratyaṣṭhāt the luṅ of prati-sthā; kaṭhakālāpam / kaṭhakauthumam are samāhāra-dvandvas of the Kaṭhas with the Kālāpas / Kauthumas. The singular holds because the arising and standing are already accomplished and merely restated.

adhvaryukratur anapuṃsakam — [A dvandva of words denoting] a sacrifice (kratu) of the adhvaryu [i.e. prescribed in the Yajurveda], when not neuter, [is singular].

Rule. A dvandva of words naming sacrifices prescribed in the Yajurveda — adhvaryu, the priest of that Veda, stands for the Veda itself — is ekavat, provided the words are not neuter.

Example.

arkaś ca aśvamedhaś ca "the arka and the aśvamedha" → both Yajurveda sacrifices, both masculine → arkāśvamedham.

Applies when / blocked by. Why "of the adhvaryu"? iṣuvajrau: the iṣu and the vajra are prescribed in the Sāmaveda, so the dvandva stays dual. Why "not neuter"? rājasūyavājapeye: these two are Yajurveda sacrifices, but they belong to the ardharca list of words used in both genders and may be neuter; as neuters they stay dual.

  • commentary BM: 'adhvaryu' here stands for the Yajurveda, which prescribes the adhvaryu's duties; arka is a great sacrifice, aśvamedha well known, both Yajurveda-prescribed, the analysis being 'arkasya ca aśvamedhasya ca samāhāraḥ'; iṣu and vajra are particular sacrifices not prescribed in the Yajurveda; rājasūya and vājapeya, though Yajurveda-prescribed, are neuter and so not singular. 'ardharcādī' is said because those two are commonly known as masculine (i.e. they belong to the ardharcādi-class of words used in both genders). Followed.

adhyayanato 'viprakṛṣṭākhyānām — [A dvandva of words denoting those] whose designations (ākhyā) are not remote from one another in respect of study (adhyayana) [is singular].

Rule. A dvandva of words for persons whose designations are close to one another by way of study is ekavat. The affix tasi in adhyayanataḥ has the sense of the instrumental: "by study".

Example.

padakāś ca kramakāś ca "students of the pada-text and students of the krama-text" — the word-by-word (pada) and the linked-word (krama) recitations of the Veda → the krama-study follows directly on the pada-study, so the two names are neighbours in study → padakakramakam.

Applies when / blocked by. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators note why the rule is needed: padakramam, the dvandva of the two texts themselves, is already singular by SK 910, but there is no class-word for their students, so a rule of their own is required.

  • commentary BM (under sk.908): the sūtra divides 'adhyayanataḥ / aviprakṛṣṭākhyānām', with tasi in the sense of the instrumental, hence Bhaṭṭoji's 'adhyayanena'; pratyāsanna = sannikṛṣṭa (close). padakāḥ are those who study the pada-text, kramakāḥ those who study the krama-text (affix vun by 'kramādibhyo vun', A 4.2.61); analysis 'padakānāṃ kramakāṇāṃ ca samāhāraḥ'. Since krama-study follows pada-study, the proximity belonging to the study is transferred to the students. padakramam is not cited, being already obtained by 'jātir aprāṇinām' (A 2.4.6); for their students there is no jāti. jātir aprāṇinām — [A dvandva] of [words denoting] a jāti (class), excluding living beings, [is ekavat].

Rule. A dvandva of words that denote a class (jāti) is ekavat, provided the class is not one of living beings.

Example.

dhānāś ca śaṣkulyaś ca "parched grain and śaṣkulī-cakes" → class-words, not living → dhānāśaṣkuli, singular; the final ī of śaṣkulī is shortened because the compound is neuter.

Applies when / blocked by. Living beings: viṭśūdrāḥ "vaiśyas and śūdras" stays plural. Only classes residing in substances count — Bhaṭṭoji's commentators derive this from the maxim that a negation of the form "not X" picks out what resembles X (the nañ-ivayukta maxim); so not rūparasau "colour and taste" (classes residing in qualities) nor gamanākuñcane "going and contracting" (classes residing in actions). And the rule holds only when the class as such is predominant; when particular things are meant, there is no ekavadbhāva: badarāmalakāni "(these) jujubes and myrobalans".

Watch out. The same pair gives badarāmalakam when the two fruits are meant as kinds and badarāmalakāni when particular fruits are meant. Read the sentence, not the compound alone.

translator notes
  • commentary BM: 'jātiḥ' in the sūtra is a nominative standing, by vyatyaya, for the genitive plural, i.e. 'of those denoting a jāti' — the Kaumudī's 'jātivācinām'. TB instead takes it as an upacāra: a dvandva whose members denote a jāti is itself called 'jāti'. Both arrive at the same construal; rendered 'of words denoting a jāti'.
  • commentary BM: dhānāśaṣkuli = samāhāra of dhānāḥ and śaṣkulyaḥ; ekavat because jāti-denoting, and the final is shortened because of the neuter (hence -i, not -ī). viṭśūdrāḥ = viśaś ca śūdrāś ca. TB: the plural viṭśūdrāḥ is in order even under jāti-predominance, by the optional plural of 'jātyākhyāyām ekasmin bahuvacanam anyatarasyām' (A 1.2.58).
  • commentary BM and TB: 'dravyajātīyānām eva' is obtained from the paryudāsa 'aprāṇinām' by the nañivayukta-nyāya (the negated term picks out what resembles the excluded item), so the rule covers jātis residing in substances, not those residing in qualities or actions: rūparasau denote jātis residing in guṇas, gamanākuñcane jātis residing in kriyās. TB adds a counter-example for 'jāti': nandakapāñcajanyau (proper names). Followed for the placement of the two 'not here' examples.
  • commentary BM on 'jātiprādhānya': the jāti is predominant when, disregarding particular individuals, the jāti as running through all its individuals is intended (as in 'ghaṭam ānaya'); it is not predominant when co-occurring words restrict it to particular individuals ('ghaṭāḥ śuklāḥ'), citing Kaiyaṭa on 'tasyādita…'. Hence badarāṇi cāmalakāni ca → badarāmalakam (ekavat); but in 'āraṇyāni badarāmalakāni' only the wild individuals are presented, the jātis are not predominant, and there is no ekavadbhāva. TB: 'jātiprādhānya eva' is obtained from the word 'jāti' in the sūtra, which would otherwise be idle since the paryudāsa alone would admit substance-words with a subordinate jāti. Followed for 'particular substances intended'.
  • commentary TB on badarāmalakāni: badara, āmalaka = the fruits, with luk of the vikāra suffix by 'phale luk' (A 4.3.163) and luk of the feminine suffix by 'luk taddhitaluki' (A 1.2.49); these denote substances with the fruit-jāti subordinate. TB reconciles this passage with the Kaumudī's later 'badarāṇi cāmalakāni ca badarāmalakam — ekavadbhāva by jātir aprāṇinām' (SK 916): there the ekavadbhāva applies under the vārttika 'phalasenāvanaspati…' (only a dvandva of plural-ending fruit words is ekavat). Recorded; no change to the English.

Rule. A dvandva of river-names, or a dvandva of region-names — but not of village-names — is ekavat in the samāhāra sense when the members differ in gender.

Example.

uddhyaś ca irāvatī ca "the Uddhya (masculine) and the Irāvatī (feminine)" → rivers of different gender → uddhyerāvati, singular and neuter, with the final ī shortened.

gaṅgā ca śoṇaś ca → gaṅgāśoṇam.

kuravaś ca kurukṣetraṃ ca "the Kurus and Kurukṣetra" → regions of different gender → kurukurukṣetram.

Applies when / blocked by. Why "of different gender"? gaṅgāyamune (both feminine), madrakekayāḥ (both masculine) stay dual and plural. Why "not villages"? jāmbavaṃ nagaram, śālūkinī grāmaḥ "Jāmbava is a city, Śālūkinī a village" → jāmbavaśālūkinyau: even a city paired with a village stays dual. The word nadī covers the masculine rivers (nada) too, since otherwise no clash of gender could arise. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators read the rule as two statements — rivers with rivers, regions with regions — and take deśa as a country, not a mountain.

  • commentary BM: the word-division is a-grāmāḥ (plural by vyatyaya); viśiṣṭa = bhinna, vi-śiṣ meaning 'differ' as in 'viśeṣaṇaṃ viśeṣyeṇa' — so viśiṣṭaliṅga = 'having different genders' (TB agrees). Hence 'differing in gender'.
  • commentary TB: the four words of the sūtra qualify the dvandva by a property of its members, and it is to be read as two statements — a dvandva of river-names, a dvandva of region-names — so gaṅgākurukṣetre is not covered; deśa here is the janapada (not mountains: kailāsagandhamādane). TB also records the vārttika that nagara is to be excluded from the a-grāma prohibition (mathurāpāṭaliputram).
  • commentary BM: uddhya and śoṇa are nadas; 'nadī' in the sūtra covers nadas too, otherwise no gender difference could arise (TB agrees). 'samāhāre … ekavat' states the upshot, the whole section being a restriction that the dvandva is samāhāra only. In jāmbavaśālūkinyau the exception bars any dvandva with a village as member, even when the other member is a city.

  • commentary BM: the sūtra itself says only that the dvandva of these is singular; Bhaṭṭoji states the upshot, that their dvandva is singular in samāhāra. yūkālikṣam analyses as 'yūkāś ca likṣāś ca' (yūkā, lice bred in hair; likṣā, nits); the form shows both singularity and neuter shortening. 'ā nakulāt' rests on the Bhāṣya statement that small creatures extend up to the mongoose. Followed.

Rule. A dvandva of the names of those whose enmity is perpetual is ekavat as before, that is, samāhāra only.

Example.

ahi + nakula "the snake and the mongoose" → perpetual enemies → ahinakulam.

Applies when / blocked by. Virodha here means enmity, not mere inability to coexist; so chāyātapau "shade and sunshine" is not covered. And the enmity must be perpetual: devāsurāḥ "gods and demons" stays plural, their hostility being occasional. The ca of the sūtra has a job: in govyāghram "cow and tiger" and kākolūkam "crow and owl" the members are also domestic animals or birds, and the option of SK 916, being the later rule, would prevail by paratva and make the singular optional. The ca re-enjoins the obligatory singular for them.

  • commentary BM: 'prāgvat' = the samāhāra-dvandva is treated as singular. virodha means enmity (vaira), not mere non-coexistence, so chāyātapau is not covered; and devāsurāḥ is not singular because the enmity of devas and asuras is occasional, not perpetual (TB agrees on both). śāśvatika is derived by nipātana from the indeclinable śaśvat, blocking the ka-substitute and ṭi-loss.
  • commentary TB and BM on the rule interaction: the paśu/śakuni option of SK 916 has its own scope in gomahiṣam / gomahiṣāḥ, haṃsacakravākam / haṃsacakravākāḥ; this rule has its own in ahinakulam (TB: mārjāramūṣakam, śramaṇabrāhmaṇam); both apply to govyāghram, kākolūkam, where the later rule would prevail by paratva — but the ca re-enjoins (punarvidhāyaka) the obligatory singular here (Bhāṣya).

  • commentary BM: 'aniravasita' is glossed 'abahiṣkṛta'; per the Bhāṣya, those after whose eating a vessel is not purified even by the cleansing with alkaline water are niravasita (caṇḍāla etc.), those after whom it is purified by such treatment are aniravasita. 'prāgvat' = the samāhāra-dvandva is singular. takṣāyaskāram analyses 'takṣāṇaś ca ayaskārāś ca'. 'pātrāt' states the purpose of 'aniravasitānām'. Followed.
  • commentary TB (with BM) takes 'śūdra' as the man other than the three varṇas, not the śūdra-jāti, because of the qualification 'aniravasitānām'; 'pātrāt' = those after whose eating the vessel is not purified even by the Smṛti-prescribed treatment ('bhasmanā śudhyate kāṃsyam'). Followed in the bracketed gloss of 'excluded from the vessel'.

gavāśvaprabhṛtīni ca
gavāśvaprabhṛtīni ca — And [the dvandvas] gavāśva and the rest [are singular, in the form in which they are pronounced].

Rule. The dvandvas gavāśva and the rest of its list are correct in the form in which they are pronounced in the list — that is, as singulars.

Example.

gāvaś ca aśvāś ca "cattle and horses" → in the list → gavāśvam.

dāsyaś ca dāsāś ca "female and male servants" → dāsīdāsam, and so on.

Applies when / blocked by. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators explain what the list adds. gavāśvam is a dvandva of domestic animals, so SK 916 would have made the singular optional; the list makes it fixed. Because the rule says "as pronounced", it covers only the form gavāśvam; the sandhi variants go-aśvam and go'śvam allowed by another rule fall outside the restriction (scholars discuss exactly what follows for them). In dāsīdāsam the list also blocks the rule of ekaśeṣa (taught in a later chapter) by which a masculine alone would stand for the pair.

  • commentary BM: 'yathoccāritāni sādhūni' means they are correct just as they are listed in the gaṇa. gavāśvam analyses 'gāvaś ca aśvāś ca'; where the option of 'vibhāṣā vṛkṣa-' (A 2.4.12) would apply because this is a dvandva of animals, this rule is invariable (nitya). But with prakṛtibhāva or pūrvarūpa by 'sarvatra vibhāṣā goḥ' (A 6.1.122), i.e. go-aśvam / go'śvam, there is no restriction to singularity, because of 'yathoccāritāni' and because the gaṇa reads only gavāśvam; the vārttika 'gavāśvādiṣu yathoccāritaṃ dvandvavṛttam' is the authority. dāsīdāsam is restricted to singularity, and the ekaśeṣa 'pumān striyā' (A 1.2.67) does not apply, by nipātana. 'ityādi' covers gavāvikam, gavaiḍakam etc. Followed.
  • commentary TB: 'yathoccāritāni' = as read by Pāṇini in the gaṇapāṭha. TB then reads, as transmitted: 'hence, since avaṅ (A 6.1.123) is optional, when avaṅ is absent the option by the next sūtra does not arise (uttarasūtreṇa vikalpo na bhavati): go-aśvam', citing 'apaśavo vā anye go-aśvebhyaḥ paśavo go-aśvāḥ'. This diverges from BM, for whom go-aśvam / go'śvam simply falls outside the singularity restriction; either TB draws the opposite conclusion (go-aśvam is not governed at all, hence not even optionally ekavat) or the 'na' is an OCR error (the OCR of this clause is poor: 'āvaḍhaḥ … nāvaḍh'). Not harmonised. TB agrees with BM that in gavāśvam the animal-dvandva option (A 2.4.12) would otherwise obtain and that in dāsīdāsam the ekaśeṣa 'pumān striyā' is set aside.

vibhāṣā vṛkṣamṛgatṛṇadhānyavyañjanapaśuśakunyaśvavaḍavapūrvāparādharottarāṇām
vibhāṣā vṛkṣa-mṛga-tṛṇa-dhānya-vyañjana-paśu-śakuni-aśvavaḍava-pūrvāpara-adharottarāṇām — Optionally (vibhāṣā) [a dvandva is ekavat] of [words for] trees, deer, grasses, grains, condiments, domestic animals, birds, and of [the pairs] aśva–vaḍavā, pūrva–apara, adhara–uttara.

Rule. Optionally ekavat: a dvandva of words for trees, for deer, for grasses, for grains, for condiments, for domestic animals, or for birds — seven classes — and the three dvandvas aśvavaḍava "stallion and mare", pūrvāpara "prior and posterior", adharottara "lower and upper". For the seven classes only words for particular species are meant, not the class-words vṛkṣa and the rest themselves.

Example.

gāvaś ca mahiṣāś ca "cattle and buffaloes" → domestic animals → either the group, gomahiṣam, or the pair, gomahiṣāḥ.

Likewise, class by class: plakṣanyagrodham / plakṣanyagrodhāḥ (trees), rurupṛṣatam / rurupṛṣatāḥ (deer), kuśakāśam / kuśakāśāḥ (grasses), vrīhiyavam / vrīhiyavāḥ (rice and barley), dadhighṛtam / dadhighṛte (curd and ghee), śukabakam / śukabakāḥ (parrots and cranes); and the three pairs aśvavaḍavam / aśvavaḍavau, pūrvāparam / pūrvāpare, adharottaram / adharottare.

Applies when / blocked by. Bhaṭṭoji audits the list, item by item.

  • The non-living classes (trees, grasses, grains, condiments) are named so that the obligatory singular of SK 910 becomes optional for them.
  • Paśu is named because elephants, horses and the like are parts of an army and would be obligatorily singular by SK 906.
  • Mṛga and śakuni are named as a restriction: deer with deer, and birds with birds, go both ways, as a group or as a pair; but deer with anything else, or birds with anything else, form a pair only. The same holds of pūrvāpara and adharottara: pūrva with apara goes both ways, but pūrvottarau is a pair only.
  • Aśvavaḍava is named so that the group-word is neuter, aśvavaḍavam. Without it the later rule pūrvavad aśvavaḍavau (SK 813), which makes the compound follow the gender of its first member, would give a masculine even in the group sense. With it, SK 813 keeps its scope in the pair, aśvavaḍavau.

A vārttika, phalasenāvanaspatimṛgaśakunikṣudrajantudhānyatṛṇānāṃ bahuprakṛtir eva dvandva ekavad iti vācyam, is a supplement to the whole block, not to this rule alone: a dvandva of words for fruits, army-parts, forest trees, deer, birds, small creatures, grains or grasses is ekavat only when its members stand in the plural (bahuprakṛti, "having a plural as its base"). badarāṇi ca āmalakāni ca "jujubes and myrobalans" → members plural → badarāmalakam, by SK 910. But badaraṃ ca āmalakaṃ ca → members singular → badarāmalake, dual; likewise rathikāśvārohau (though army-parts, SK 906) and plakṣanyagrodhau (though trees), and so on.

Watch out. A compound such as gomahiṣam is optional at three levels: whether to compound at all (SK 901), whether the compound is a group or a pair (SK 901), and, for these classes, whether the pair is allowed beside the group (this rule lifts the "group only" restriction optionally).

badarāṇi cāmalakāni ca → badarāmalakam 'jujubes and myrobalans': ekavadbhāva by 'jātir aprāṇinām' (SK 910). Not here: badarāmalake [dual, members in the singular]; rathikāśvārohau; plakṣanyagrodhau; and so on. In the sūtra 'vibhāṣā vṛkṣa…' (SK 916), the inclusion of those that are non-living (aprāṇin) is for the sake of an option (vikalpa) where [ekavadbhāva] would obtain obligatorily (nitya) by 'jātir aprāṇinām' (SK 910). The inclusion of paśu (domestic animals) [is for the sake of an option] where, for elephants, horses and the like, [ekavadbhāva] would obtain obligatorily because of their being parts of an army (senāṅga). The dvandva of deer with deer only, and of birds with those [birds] only, [occurs] in both ways [as itaretarayoga and as samāhāra]; but with others [it is] itaretarayoga only — the inclusion of mṛga and śakuni is for the sake of this restriction (niyama). Likewise pūrvāpara and adharottara too. The inclusion of aśvavaḍava, however, is for the sake of neuter gender in [one] alternative; otherwise, because of its being the later rule (paratva), 'pūrvavad aśvavaḍavau' (SK 813) would apply.

translator notes
  • commentary BM: 'dvandvaḥ' is carried forward (anuvṛtti); the single genitive of the sūtra is split by domain — the seven (vṛkṣa … śakuni) construe as members, 'a dvandva of tree-words etc.', while the three pairs aśvavaḍava, pūrvāpara, adharottara construe by identity, 'the dvandva consisting of aśvavaḍava etc.'; 'prāgvat' = optionally ekavat. Followed in 'the dvandva of the seven … and the three dvandvas aśvavaḍava etc.'.
  • commentary On 'viśeṣāṇām eva grahaṇam': TB — the dvandva is qualified by each of vṛkṣa etc.; a single word vṛkṣa is no dvandva, two identical words undergo ekaśeṣa by 'sarūpāṇām…' (A 1.2.64), synonyms by 'virūpāṇām api samānārthānām', and a generic-plus-specific pair (vṛkṣaś ca dhavaś ca) forms no dvandva at all for want of usage (anabhidhāna) — so only species-words remain. BM — the sense is 'words for particular trees, grasses, grains, animals', as stated in Bhāṣya and vārttika under 'svaṃ rūpam…' (A 1.1.68); a case like vṛkṣāś ca dhavāś ca falls outside this rule and takes obligatory ekavattva by 'jātir aprāṇinām'. The two differ on vṛkṣa-dhava (no dvandva vs obligatory ekavat); translated neutrally.
  • commentary Vigrahas (BM): plakṣāś ca nyagrodhāś ca; ruravaś ca pṛṣatāś ca; kuśāś ca kāśāś ca; vrīhayaś ca yavāś ca; dadhi ca ghṛtaṃ ca; gāvaś ca mahiṣāś ca; śukāś ca bakāś ca; aśvāś ca vaḍavāś ca — the masculine of aśvavaḍavau is by 'pūrvavad aśvavaḍavau', i.e. like the prior member. BM assigns the examples to the classes in order: tree, deer, grass, grain, condiment, animal, bird, then the three pairs.
  • commentary BM and TB: this vārttika is a supplement (śeṣa) to the whole ekavadbhāva section, not to this sūtra alone — a dvandva of fruit-, army-words etc. that becomes ekavat by 'dvandvaś ca prāṇi…' or any other rule does so only when its members end in the plural, not in the singular or dual. TB glosses bahuprakṛti as 'having many meanings, or plural-ending items, as its base'. The bracketed gloss follows this.
  • commentary BM: badarāṇi, āmalakāni = fruits of the badarī and āmalakī, with luk of the vikāra taddhita by 'phale luk' (A 4.3.163) and of the feminine suffix by 'luk taddhitaluki' (A 1.2.49); TB adds that the plural is the optional one of 'jātyākhyāyām ekasmin…' (A 1.2.58). 'neha' shows the purpose of 'bahuprakṛtir eva': badarāmalake (badaraṃ cāmalakaṃ ca) has singular-ending members, so no ekavattva by 'jātir aprāṇinām'; rathikāśvārohau likewise despite being senāṅga; plakṣanyagrodhau despite being a tree-dvandva; 'ityādi' = rurupṛṣatau, haṃsacakravākau, yūkālikṣe, vrīhiyavau, kuśakāśau. The bracket '[dual, members in the singular]' follows this.
  • commentary BM on 'vibhāṣā … vikalpārtham': answers the objection that 'cārthe dvandvaḥ' already yields the option (samāhāra vs itaretarayoga) — for the non-living classes (plakṣanyagrodham, rurupṛṣatam, kuśakāśam, vrīhiyavam, dadhighṛtam) the obligatory ekavattva of 'jātir aprāṇinām' is thereby made optional. On 'paśugrahaṇam': 'vikalpārtham' is carried on (BM and TB both say anuṣajyate); gomahiṣam itself needs no such provision, but hasti, aśva etc. would be obligatorily ekavat as senāṅga. Supplied in brackets accordingly.
  • commentary BM on 'mṛgāṇāṃ mṛgair eva…': 'ubhayatra' = in itaretarayoga and in samāhāra (śukabakam, śukabakau); with others, itaretarayoga only (ruruśukāḥ) — a niyama, since neither 'jātir aprāṇinām' nor senāṅga-ekavattva reaches deer and birds. 'evaṃ pūrvāparam adharottaram api': pūrva with apara only, adhara with uttara only, in both ways; with another word (pūrvottarau) itaretarayoga only. TB agrees on the niyama reading. Followed for 'in both ways' and 'with others'.
  • commentary On 'aśvavaḍavagrahaṇaṃ … napuṃsakatvārtham / anyathā paratvāt': BM — since 'paśu' already gives the ekavat option, aśvavaḍava is stated so that the neuter holds in the samāhāra alternative; without it, 'pūrvavad aśvavaḍavau' (the later rule) would override 'sa napuṃsakam' even in the samāhāra alternative and give the masculine; with it, by its force the neuter prevails there, and 'pūrvavad aśvavaḍavau' has scope in itaretarayoga. TB — the explicit mention makes the neuter pratipadokta (the 'saḥ' of 'sa napuṃsakam' refers to what is ekavat), and the pratipadokta is stronger. Both explain the same sentence; translated neutrally.
  • textual Source reads 'mṛgākṛnigrahaṇam'; the expected reading is 'mṛgaśakunigrahaṇam' (so the BM pratīka 'mṛgaśakunigrahaṇam ity antam' and TB 'mṛgaśakunigrahaṇam'). Also 'niyamārtha' for 'niyamārthaṃ'. Translated as mṛga-śakuni; source left as is.
  • textual The block opens with the label '(vārtikam)' marking the end of the preceding vārttika block k2; the label is source markup and is not translated.

vipratiṣiddhaṃ cānadhikaraṇavāci — And [a dvandva of words] of mutually opposed meaning that do not denote substances (adhikaraṇa) [is optionally treated as singular].

Rule. A dvandva of words of opposed meaning that do not denote substances (adhikaraṇa, here the same as dravya) is optionally ekavat. The word vibhāṣā is carried forward from SK 916.

Example.

śīta + uṣṇa "cold and heat" → opposed, and qualities rather than substances → śītoṣṇam or śītoṣṇe.

Applies when / blocked by. SK 901 already allows the group-compound optionally, so this rule is a restriction on that option: if words of opposed meaning form a group-compound, only words not denoting substances do so. Hence for substances there is the pair only: śītoṣṇe udake staḥ "there are cold and hot waters". Why "opposed"? nandakapāñcajanyau, Viṣṇu's sword and conch: they are not opposed — both rest in Viṣṇu — so the restriction does not touch them, and the group-compound remains available on one alternative. "Opposed" here means unable to coexist, not the enmity of SK 913.

A dvandva of [words] of opposed meaning that do not denote substances (dravya) is optionally treated as singular. śītoṣṇam; śītoṣṇe. The optional collective dvandva (samāhāra-dvandva) that falls due by the sūtra "cārthe [dvandvaḥ]" (SK 901) — if it occurs for [words] of opposed meaning, then only for those that do not denote substances: this [sūtra] serves that restriction (niyama). Hence for [words] denoting substances there is only the itaretarayoga [dvandva]: śītoṣṇe udake staḥ ("there are cold and hot waters"). Why "mutually opposed"? nandakapāñcajanyau — here the optional collective dvandva does occur.

  • commentary BM: 'vibhāṣā' is carried forward (anuvṛtti) from SK 916 (TB: the ca serves to draw it down) — hence 'optionally'. adhikaraṇa = dravya (both); vipratiṣedha = opposition of the non-coexistence kind (sahānavasthāna), both — contrast the enmity (vaira) of SK 913.
  • commentary BM: nandaka (Viṣṇu's sword) and pāñcajanya (his conch) coexist in Viṣṇu and so are not opposed; without 'vipratiṣiddham' the restriction would read 'every samāhāra-dvandva only of non-substance words' and would bar nandakapāñcajanyam; with it, the restriction is confined to opposed words, so for these two the samāhāra-dvandva by 'cārthe' does occur on one alternative (TB agrees).

na dadhipayaādīni
na dadhipayaādīni — [The dvandvas] dadhipayas and the rest are not [singular].

Rule. The dvandvas dadhipayas and the rest of its list are not ekavat: for them there is no group-compound at all.

Example.

dadhi ca payaś ca "curd and milk" → in the list → dadhipayasī, dual only.

idhma + barhis "fuel and sacred grass" → idhmābarhiṣī; the long ā of idhmā is set down by nipātana.

ṛk ca sāma ca → ṛksāme; vāk ca manaś ca "speech and mind" → vāṅmanase; these two take the closing affix ac (A 5.4.77) that gave ahorātraḥ in chapter 18.

Applies when / blocked by. For dadhipayasī the obligatory singular of SK 910 had already been made optional by SK 916 (condiments); this rule withholds even the option. The negation is of the singular itself, not merely of the restriction: the list also holds brahmaprajāpatī, which no "samāhāra only" rule ever reached, so the rule can only mean that the group-compound allowed by SK 901 is forbidden for these.

  • commentary BM: 'naikavat syuḥ' means these have no samāhāra-dvandva. dadhipayasī ('dadhi ca payaś ca'): the invariable singularity by 'jātir aprāṇinām' (A 2.4.6) is set aside by the option due to their being a dvandva of condiments (A 2.4.12), and even that option does not occur. 'dīrghaḥ' is completed with 'idhmaśabdasya' (of the word idhma) — followed in the bracket. ṛksāme ('ṛk ca sāma ca') and vāṅmanase ('vāk ca manaś ca') take the samāsānta ac by 'acatura-' (A 5.4.77).
  • commentary BM and TB agree on the scope of the negation: since the gaṇa also lists brahmaprajāpatī etc., for which the restriction 'samāhāra-dvandva only' could never apply, this rule negates singularity (ekavadbhāva) itself and not merely the restriction, so that it amounts to a prohibition of the samāhāra-dvandva otherwise available by 'cārthe dvandvaḥ' (A 2.2.29). TB adds that the negation is of ekavadbhāva in general, whatever rule would have produced it, so the jāti-based singularity cannot survive; and that madhusarpiṣī, sarpirmadhunī behave alike.
  • commentary TB: in ṛksāme and vāṅmanase the samāsānta ac of 'acatura-' is here set down by nipātana.

Rule. When a definite count of the substances (adhikaraṇa) is understood from another word, the restriction "singular only" does not hold.

Example.

daśa dantoṣṭhāḥ "ten teeth and lips" → teeth and lips are body-parts, so SK 906 would demand dantoṣṭham → but the count daśa is stated → the restriction is lifted → dantoṣṭhāḥ, the pair, is correct.

Applies when / blocked by. What is lifted is the restriction, not the singular treatment as such. • commentary BM and TB: adhikaraṇa = dravya, the substrate of the compound's meaning; etāvattva = its definite count, conveyed by another word in the sentence (daśa).
  • commentary BM (TB agrees): what the sūtra negates is the restriction 'singular only' (the prāṇyaṅga rule, SK 906, since teeth and lips are limbs), not the singular treatment itself — hence 'niyamo na syāt'. A samāhāra-dvandva is anyway unavailable here (the members depend on the external word daśa, so no sāmarthya); what remains is the itaretarayoga-dvandva daśa dantoṣṭhāḥ, admissible because the principal members may depend on an outside word (Bhāṣya). TB adds that on the view that restriction-sūtras operate by way of prohibition, this sūtra is what secures the itaretarayoga-dvandva.

vibhāṣā samīpe
vibhāṣā samīpe — Optionally, when [the count of the substances is] approximate (samīpa).

Rule. When the count of the substances is only approximate (samīpa, "near"), the restriction "samāhāra only" holds optionally. The words adhikaraṇaitāvattve are carried forward from SK 919.

Example.

upadaśaṃ dantoṣṭham "teeth and lips, about ten" → the restriction kept → dantoṣṭham, the group; upadaśam "near ten" is an avyayībhāva (chapter 17), used with it because it agrees in gender and number.

upadaśā dantoṣṭhāḥ → the restriction dropped → dantoṣṭhāḥ, the pair; upadaśāḥ "those near ten" is a bahuvrīhi (chapter 19).

  • textual Source reads upadāśaṃ dantoṣṭham and upadaśa dantoṣṭhāḥ; BM's pratīkas read upadaśaṃ dantoṣṭham and upadaśā dantoṣṭhāḥ (TB: upadaśaṃ dantoṣṭham), which are the forms the derivation requires (upa + daśan; upadaśāḥ + d- → upadaśā d-). Both look like digitization slips; the English follows the commentators' forms upadaśaṃ dantoṣṭham / upadaśā dantoṣṭhāḥ; the source is not emended.
  • commentary BM: 'adhikaraṇaitāvattve' is carried forward (anuvṛtti) from SK 919; 'samīpe' = 'when determined by approximation'. TB: the SK words it as 'the restriction holds optionally' (rather than 'samāhāra-dvandva optionally') to match the previous sūtra's negation of the restriction.
  • commentary BM and TB: in upadaśaṃ dantoṣṭham, upadaśam is an avyayībhāva ('near ten') and dantoṣṭham the samāhāra-dvandva, the avyayībhāva alone being used with it since it matches in gender and number (Bhāṣya); in upadaśā dantoṣṭhāḥ, upadaśāḥ is a bahuvrīhi ('those near ten', i.e. nine or eleven) with the itaretarayoga-dvandva.

आनङ् ऋतो द्वन्द्वे ॥ ९२१ ॥
ānaṅ ṛto dvandve
ānaṅ ṛto dvandve — In a dvandva [of words denoting persons related by learning or birth], ānaṅ [is substituted] for [the final] ṛ [of the prior member, when an uttarapada follows].

Rule. In a dvandva of ṛ-final words that denote persons related through learning (vidyā) or through birth (yoni), ānaṅ replaces the final ṛ of the prior member when a later member (uttarapada) follows.

Example.

mātā ca pitā ca "mother and father" → stems mātṛ + pitṛ, related by birth → ānaṅ for the ṛ of mātṛ → mātā + pitṛ → dual ending → mātāpitarau.

hotā ca potā ca "the hotṛ and the potṛ (priests)" → related by learning, the offices of one sacrifice → hotāpotārau.

hotṛ + potṛ + neṣṭṛ + udgātṛ in one flat dvandva → only neṣṭṛ stands directly before the last member → ānaṅ on it alone → neṣṭā + udgātāraḥ → ā + u → o by guṇa → hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ. Compare the pair-wise form of SK 901, hotāpotāneṣṭodgātāraḥ, where each pair had its own prior member.

Applies when / blocked by. The word putre "before putra" leaps down into this rule by anuvṛtti from putre 'nyatarasyām (A 6.3.22), skipping the rules in between — a maṇḍūkapluti, "frog-leap". Hence also pitā ca putraś ca → pitāputrau "father and son", though putra does not end in ṛ.

Watch out. The ā appears only on the member that stands immediately before the last member. In hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ, hotṛ and potṛ keep their ṛ.

  • textual The Bālamanoramā block filed under this unit (sk.921.b1) is the commentary on the next sūtra, 'devatādvandve ca' (A 6.3.26): it opens with that pratīka and glosses mitrāvaruṇau, the vāyu prohibition and 'punar dvandvagrahaṇam'. BM on 6.3.25 itself is absent from the source layer; sk.922 carries no BM block. Source-alignment issue, not emended.
  • commentary TB: in hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ neṣṭṛ is not the prior member (pūrvapada), since only the first constituent is the pūrvapada. The relation in hotṛ/potṛ etc. is one of learning (the priestly offices in one sacrifice); in mātāpitarau and pitāputrau it is one of birth (parent and offspring). 'maṇḍūkaplutyā' means 'putre' leaps over the intervening rules and is not connected with 'vibhāṣā svasṛpatyoḥ' (A 6.3.24).
  • translator In the many-member hotṛpotṛneṣṭodgātāraḥ, ānaṅ appears only on neṣṭṛ, the member immediately before the uttarapada udgātṛ (neṣṭā + udgātāraḥ → neṣṭodgātāraḥ, with guṇa of ā + u), not on hotṛ or potṛ; the kaumudī gives the form beside hotāpotārau without stating this, and the translation reproduces it as given. TB (in its run-on block filed under SK 920) confirms that ānaṅ falls on the middle member (madhyamasya ānaṅ), and the stray BM opening under SK 902, 'neṣṭodgātṛśabde ād guṇaś ca', notes the guṇa. BM on this sūtra itself is missing from the source.

devatādvandve ca
devatādvandve ca — And in a dvandva of deity-names [ānaṅ is substituted for the final of the prior member, when an uttarapada follows].

Rule. In a dvandva of deity-names too, ānaṅ replaces the final of the prior member when a later member follows — whether or not it ends in ṛ.

Example.

mitraś ca varuṇaś ca "Mitra and Varuṇa" → deities → ānaṅ for the final a of mitra → mitrā + varuṇa → mitrāvaruṇau.

Applies when / blocked by. A vārttika, vāyuśabdaprayoge pratiṣedhaḥ: when the word vāyu is a member, whether first or second, there is no ānaṅ — agnivāyū, vāyvagnī.

The word dvandve was already carried forward from SK 921, yet the sūtra says it again. The repetition limits the rule to deities whose association is well known: those heard in the Veda as sharing one portion of the oblation, or otherwise well known as a pair. Hence no ānaṅ in brahmaprajāpatī "Brahmā and Prajāpati", a pairing known neither from the Veda nor from ordinary usage (Bhaṭṭoji's commentators discuss whether the second criterion is sound).

(vārttika) agnivāyū. vāyvagnī. The renewed mention of "dvandva" [in this sūtra, although "dvandve" is already carried forward from the preceding rule] is for the purpose of taking in [only] well-known association (prasiddha-sāhacarya). Hence in brahmaprajāpatī and the like there is no ānaṅ; for this [pairing] is neither heard [in the Veda] as sharing a single oblation-portion (havirbhāga), nor is it an association well known in the world.

  • textual This unit carries no Bālamanoramā block in the source; BM's commentary on this sūtra is filed under sk.921 (sk.921.b1). Read from there; not emended.
  • commentary TB: the rule is needed for words not ending in ṛ and for relations other than learning or birth (which 6.3.25 covers); BM says the same of mitrāvaruṇau, not obtained by the previous rule for want of a final ṛ.
  • commentary BM: the vārttika means the prohibition of ānaṅ is to be stated when vāyu is used whether as prior or as posterior member (hence both agnivāyū and vāyvagnī). 'punar' answers the objection that with 'dvandva' already carried forward its repetition is pointless: it serves to take in the deity-words whose association is well known from joint offering (nirvāpa) etc.; 'etat' is the pair brahma-prajāpati, not known in the Veda as sharing an oblation-portion. Followed.
  • commentary BM on 'nāpi loke': it regards Bhaṭṭoji's second criterion (association well known in the world) as a mere bold statement (prauḍhivāda), since the Bhāṣya speaks only of those stated in the Veda as receiving a joint offering, and worldly association would over-extend to pārvatīparameśvarau etc. The kaumudī is translated as it stands; the divergence is recorded here (§16).

Rule. In a dvandva of deity-names, ī replaces the final of agni when soma or varuṇa follows as the later member. Bhaṭṭoji's whole comment is that devatādvandve "in a deity-dvandva" continues from SK 922 by anuvṛtti. His commentators add that the rule is an exception (apavāda) to ānaṅ: where it applies, SK 922 does not.

Example.

agniś ca somaś ca "Agni and Soma" → deities, soma follows → ī for the i of agni → agnī + soma; the finished form agnīṣomau needs one more step, taught in SK 924.

  • commentary BM: 'ity eva' means that 'devatādvandve' (A 6.3.26) continues by anuvṛtti (anuvartata eva); the rule then says that in a deity-dvandva, when soma or varuṇa follows as uttarapada, ī is substituted for [the final of] agni; it is an exception (apavāda) to ānaṅ. TB agrees on the apavāda relation and notes that the anuvṛtti stands in the Vṛtti. Followed.
  • commentary TB offers an alternative: the anuvṛtti of 'devatādvandve' may be dispensed with, since agnisomau (of two boys) is faultless anyway by the maxim 'abhivyaktapadārthā ye svatantrā lokaviśrutāḥ'; and Āśvalāyana's 'agnīṣomau praṇeṣyāmi' (OCR 'amīṣomau', read as agnīṣomau), a non-deity dvandva of jyotis and latā, is acceptable as ārṣa (Vedic) usage. Rule. In a compound, the s of stut, stoma and soma becomes ṣ when they follow agni. This is a rule from a later part of the grammar, spliced in here because agnīṣomau cannot be finished without it.

Example.

agni + stut "(the sacrifice) in which Agni is praised" → s after agni → agniṣṭut, the name of a sacrifice.

agni + stoma → agniṣṭomaḥ, the name of a hymn of praise (stotra) and of a form of the soma-sacrifice.

agnī + soma (from SK 923) → s after agni → agnīṣomau "Agni and Soma".

agnī + varuṇa → no s to change → agnīvaruṇau.

Applies when / blocked by. Bhaṭṭoji's commentators note that this rule is an exception to sāt padādyoḥ (A 8.3.111), which otherwise forbids ṣ at the beginning of a word inside a compound. And they note that the non-deity agnisomau gets neither ī nor ṣ: the ṣ of soma is wanted only after the lengthened agnī.

  • commentary BM: 'stut-stoma-somāḥ' is a dvandva in the nominative with genitive sense; 'saḥ' (genitive singular) is carried forward (anuvṛtti) from 'saheḥ sāḍaḥ saḥ' (A 8.3.56), 'samāse' from 'samāse 'ṅguleḥ saṅgaḥ' (A 8.3.80), and 'ṣaḥ' comes by the anuvṛtti of 'apadāntasya mūrdhanyaḥ' (A 8.3.55); 'agneḥ' is ablative. This is what the Kaumudī's paraphrase 'agneḥ pareṣām eṣāṃ sasya ṣaḥ syāt samāse' unpacks. BM and TB: the rule is an exception (apavāda) to the prohibition of ṣatva in 'sāt padādyoḥ' (A 8.3.111), which would otherwise block ṣ at the beginning of these padas.
  • commentary BM: agniṣṭut is a particular sacrifice (kratu); agniṣṭomaḥ is the name of a particular stotra and of a particular saṃsthā. TB: agniṣṭut = 'that in which Agni is praised', kvip in locative sense by the saṃpadādi rule; agniṣṭomaḥ = 'the stoma of the fires', the first of the saṃsthās of the soma sacrifice. The bracketed glosses follow this.
  • commentary BM: agnīṣomau = agniś ca somaś ca, with ī by 'īd agneḥ somavaruṇayoḥ' (SK 923) and ṣ by this rule; agnīvaruṇau = agniś ca varuṇaś ca, with ī only (varuṇa has no s). Where the dvandva is not of deities — Agni and Soma as persons' names — agnisomau has no ī, and therefore no ṣ either, by the vārttika 'agner dīrghāt somasya iṣyate' (ṣ of soma is wanted only after the lengthened agni). The Kaumudī gives finished forms only; the steps are BM's.
  • textual The BM block runs on past this sūtra into its commentary on 'id vṛddhau' (SK 925: agnāmarutau, āgnimārutam, āgnivāruṇam, the alaukika-vākya discussion). Read through; that material belongs to SK 925 and is not used here.

idvṛddhau
idvṛddhau — [In a devatā-dvandva, in place of the final of agni] there is it (short i) when [the following member] carries vṛddhi.

Rule. In a deity-dvandva, when the later member carries vṛddhi, short i (it; the t is for pronunciation) replaces the final of agni. A later member carries vṛddhi when the dvandva is the base of a taddhita word: by devatādvandve ca (SK 1239) such a derivative takes vṛddhi in both members.

Example.

agnāmarutau devate asya "(the rite) whose deities are Agni and the Maruts" → the taddhita affix is added to the dvandva → vṛddhi in both members by SK 1239 → the later member māruta now carries vṛddhi → short i for the final of agni → āgnimārutaṃ karma.

agnīvaruṇau devate asya → both members take vṛddhi → āgnivāruṇam.

Applies when / blocked by. The i is prescribed at the technical stage of derivation (the alaukika sentence, the analysis with case-endings shown) and there it sets aside both ānaṅ (SK 922) and ī (SK 923). Bhaṭṭoji's commentators observe that prescribing i in place of i has its point precisely in displacing those two substitutes. Why "when there is vṛddhi"? āgnendraḥ "(the rite) of Agni and Indra": by nendrasya parasya (SK 1240) indra as later member takes no vṛddhi, so this rule does not apply, ānaṅ stands, and ā + i gives e by guṇa.

A vārttika, viṣṇau na: not before viṣṇu — āgnāvaiṣṇavam, where ānaṅ remains although vaiṣṇava carries vṛddhi.

By "devatādvandve ca" (SK 1239) vṛddhi occurs in both members. In the non-worldly (alaukika) sentence [i.e. at the stage of formal derivation], it [applies], setting aside ānaṅ and the ī-substitution. Why "when there is vṛddhi"? āgnendraḥ — by "nendrasya parasya" (SK 1240) vṛddhi of the following member is prohibited.

  • textual Source reads agnivaruṇau devate asya (short i). BM, in its block filed under SK 924 that runs on into this sūtra, reads agnīvaruṇau with explicit ītva ('agnīvaruṇāv iti — īd agner itīttvam'; 'agnīvaruṇau devate asya iti ca vigrahe … ānaṅ-īttvābhyāṃ pariniṣṭhitāt'), and the derivation requires it (ī by SK 923 in the dvandva, then displaced by it under the vṛddhi). Translated as agnīvaruṇau; the source's short i is taken as a digitization slip and is not emended.
  • commentary TB: 'vṛddhau' means an uttarapada that carries vṛddhi (vṛddhimat), since the uttarapada cannot itself be vṛddhi — hence the SK's 'vṛddhimaty uttarapade'. The t of 'it' is for pronunciation; prescribing i for i serves to block the blockers (ānaṅ, ī).
  • commentary TB on 'setting aside ānaṅ and ītva': although ānaṅ (SK 922) and ī (SK 923), being antaraṅga, would apply before the vṛddhi, by the maxim 'the utsarga takes hold only after leaving the domain of its apavāda' they do not apply here.
  • commentary BM on āgnendraḥ: agni + indra → agnendrau (ānaṅ by 'devatādvandve ca' A 6.3.26, then guṇa), aṇ by 'sāsya devatā' (A 4.2.24) with initial vṛddhi; since the uttarapada indra carries no vṛddhi ('nendrasya parasya'), idvṛddhau does not apply and ānaṅ stands.
  • commentary BM: agni + viṣṇu → agnāviṣṇū (ānaṅ), aṇ by 'sāsya devatā' → āgnāvaiṣṇavaṃ haviḥ with vṛddhi of both members; in the absence of it, ānaṅ remains (TB agrees).

दिवो द्यावा ॥ ९२६ ॥
divo dyāvā
divo dyāvā — [In a deity-dvandva, when an uttarapada follows,] dyāvā is substituted for div.

Rule. In a deity-dvandva, dyāvā is substituted for div when a later member follows. Bhaṭṭoji supplies only the setting, "in a deity-dvandva, when an uttarapada follows"; the subject and the substitute are read off the sūtra itself.

Example.

dyauś ca bhūmiś ca "heaven and earth" → div is the prior member → dyāvā + bhūmi → dyāvābhūmī.

dyauś ca kṣāmā ca → dyāvākṣāmā, a Vedic form, kṣāmā being a Vedic word for the earth; there the case-ending is replaced by ḍā by a Vedic rule (A 7.1.39).

  • commentary BM: the Kaumudī explains the sūtra by supplying its remainder — 'in a deity-dvandva, when an uttarapada follows'; the bracketed subject and operation are that remainder, read from the sūtra 'divo dyāvā' itself.
  • commentary BM: dyāvābhūmī = dyauś ca bhūmiś ca; dyāvākṣāmā = dyauś ca kṣāmā ca, kṣāmā being a Vedic synonym of bhūmi, the form occurring in the ṛc 'dyāvākṣāmā rukmo antar vi bhāti' standing for the genitive dual dyāvāpṛthivyoḥ; in that dvandva dyāvā replaces div, the genitive ending is replaced by ḍā by 'supāṃ suluk…' (A 7.1.39), and both members keep their original accent by 'devatādvandve ca', as is clear in the Veda-bhāṣya. divasaśca pṛthivyām
divasaś ca pṛthivyām — And divas [is the substitute for div] before pṛthivī [in a devatā-dvandva].

Rule. Before pṛthivī, divas is substituted for div — and, by the ca, dyāvā as well. The word divaḥ "of div" continues from SK 926.

Example.

dyauś ca pṛthivī ca "heaven and earth" → divas for div → divaspṛthivyau; or dyāvā for div → dyāvāpṛthivyau.

Applies when / blocked by. The sūtra states the substitute as divasa, with an a after the s. The a is not heard in the result; it is pronounced only so that the s is not turned into ru by sasajuṣo ruḥ (A 8.2.66), which would give a visarga. In the Veda the rule follows attested usage (dṛṣṭānuvidhi): dyāvā cid asmai pṛthivī, where the two members stand apart with other words between them. In divaspṛthivyor aratim the authors of the word-by-word recitation (padapāṭha) read a visarga, divaḥ-pṛthivyoḥ; scholars discuss this.

In the Veda [the operation] follows what is observed (dṛṣṭānuvidhi): "dyāvā cid asmai pṛthivī". In "divaspṛthivyor aratim" the authors of the padapāṭha read a visarga.

  • commentary BM: 'diva ity eva' means 'divaḥ' is carried forward (anuvṛtti) from 'divo dyāvā' (SK 926), being svarita-marked; the ca then supplies dyāvā as a further alternative — so div takes divas or dyāvā before pṛthivī in a devatā-dvandva.
  • commentary BM: since no a is heard in divaspṛthivyoḥ, the substitute must end in s; the a is pronounced so that, by the force (sāmarthya) of that pronunciation, ru by 'sasajuṣo ruḥ' (A 8.2.66) does not apply. 'chandasi dṛṣṭānuvidhiḥ' is the Bhāṣya's sentence, answering how the dvandva and the dyāvā-substitute obtain in 'dyāvā cid asmai pṛthivī' though the members are separated by 'cid asmai'.
  • commentary BM and TB differ on the padakāras' visarga in 'divaḥ-pṛthivyoḥ'. BM: the padapāṭha is late and its visarga reading a lapse, since the a was pronounced precisely to exclude ru. TB: from it one infers only that 'sometimes the change [to divas] does not occur', in deference to attested usage. The English is kept neutral.

TB adds the many-member form vāktvaksrajam, and marks the end of the dvandva section here ('iti dvandvaḥ'), the remainder of its block belonging to the ekaśeṣa section. TB's OCR reads 'tvakkhajam' for tvaksrajam.
