teṣāṁ tu vacanaṁ śrutvā munīnāṁ bharato muniḥ | pratyuvāca punarvākyaṁ rasabhāvavikalpanam
teṣāṁ ... munīnāṁof those sages — the ṛṣis who had just put their questions genitive; Abhinava treats teṣāṁ as a form of tad reaching back to the earlier discourse (s1)उन मुनियों के (जिनकी पूर्व चर्चा हुई थी)
tuhere 'now / and so'; Abhinava reads it as 'because' (hetu) see s1 — tu-śabdo hetau'तु' यहाँ कारण दिखाता है — इसीलिए
vacanaṁ śrutvāhaving heard the wordsवचन सुनकर

vākyaṁ rasabhāvavikalpanama statement that sorts out the rasas and the bhāvas — rasa-bhāva-vikalpana = 'that which distinguishes rasa and bhāva'रस और भाव का विवेचन करने वाला वाक्य
teṣāṁ munīnāṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā tu bharato muniḥ rasa-bhāva-vikalpanaṁ vākyaṁ punaḥ pratyuvāca.
Having heard the words of those sages, Bharata the sage spoke back — a fresh statement that sorts out the rasas and the bhāvas.
Frame verse opening Bharata's reply. Abhinava will show that punaḥ ('again') and tu carry more weight than their surface placement suggests (s1, s4–s5).

I shall tell you the whole of it, O ascetics: the saṅgraha (the summary), the kārikā (the verse-rules), and the nirukta (the word-derivations) — each in its turn.
Bharata's programmatic promise. saṅgraha = a compendium stated in brief; kārikā = a memorial verse fixing a rule; nirukta = the analytic, etymological explanation. Abhinava (s2–s3) lines these up with the standard śāstra procedure of uddeśa (naming), lakṣaṇa (defining), parīkṣā (examining).

There is no way to reach the end of this nāṭya. Why? Because the sciences it draws on are countless, and the crafts too are endless.
The claim carries its own hetu (kasmāt ... bahutvāt ... anantataḥ): the śāstra is inexhaustible, which is why the compact saṅgraha-method — not a term-by-term treatment — must be used.

The word tu is doing the work of 'because.' And the pronoun tat, in 'teṣāṁ,' reaches back to the earlier discourse — the sages' own words.

Naming and examining are only limbs of the definition. Naming shows what field the definition covers; examining purifies the definition. Both work in service of the one lakṣaṇa.
Technical distinction of the śāstra's threefold method. uddeśa (naming) points out the subject-field — as saying 'lotus' before you define it flags what is on the table. parīkṣā (examining) tests the proposed definition against counter-cases and cleans it up. Neither stands alone: both exist only to establish and refine the lakṣaṇa (definition), which is the real work.

And so, for this śāstra, treating everything term by term simply won't do.
