The far end of even one single ocean of knowledge cannot truly be reached down to its very essence. How much less, then, the ends of all the other sciences! There is no traversing them all.
The mūla's justification for teaching only a saṅgraha (compendium): since no branch of learning can be exhausted, Bharata will give a condensed digest rather than an exhaustive treatment.

'Artha' here is the meaning, what a word expresses; 'tattvataḥ' is 'down to its very essence.' The ocean (arṇava) stands for boundless expanse — knowledge spread out without limit. Because of that vastness he now takes up the word 'of the others.'

'Anumāna-prasādhaka' — 'what proves by inference' — means the definition (lakṣaṇa). Why? Because a definition works like a purely-negative reason: it fixes its object by ruling out everything the object is not.
kevalavyatirekin: in Nyāya, an inferential reason available only through negative concomitance — it has no positive example and so establishes its object solely by 'wherever not-X, there not-H'. A lakṣaṇa functions the same way, marking off a thing by excluding all else.

āśrayāsiddha: a Nyāya inference-fault where the pakṣa (subject, the locus) is itself unestablished, so the reason has nowhere to sit. Naming the subject in the uddeśa secures its existence and blocks this fault.

pakṣadharmatā: the first requirement of a valid Nyāya inference — the hetu (reason) must genuinely reside in the pakṣa (subject). With no settled subject there is no pakṣadharmatā, hence the care to establish it first.

'Bhāṣya' is the examination whose job is to unfold and make plain what the sūtra states in brief. Now, someone might read verse 8's 'alpa-sūtra-grantha-artha' as 'the meaning in which the sūtras and text are few.' Abhinava rejects that reading: it does not square with verse 9, which makes the saṅgraha a condensation of what sūtra and bhāṣya teach at length — so it is the digest that is scant, not the sūtras.
