bhāvāścaiva kathaṁ proktāḥ kiṁ vā te bhāvayantyapi | saṅgrahaṁ kārikāṁ caiva niruktaṁ caiva tatvataḥ
bhāvāś caiva kathaṁ proktāḥand how, too, are the bhāvas declared? ca — 'and', adding the second and third questionsऔर भाव किस प्रकार कहे गए हैं
kiṁ vā te bhāvayanty apior do they also 'bhāvayanti' — bring things into being, or pervade? bhāvayanti — causative with two senses (produce / pervade); this is the śleṣa the commentary will later openअथवा वे भाव क्या 'भावित' करते हैं (उत्पन्न करते / व्याप्त करते) भी
saṅgrahaṁ kārikāṁ caivagive the saṅgraha (the summing-up) and the kārikā (the memorial verse)संग्रह और कारिका
niruktaṁ caiva tatvataḥand the nirukta (the derivation of the words), truly tatvataḥ — 'in accordance with the real nature', i.e. accuratelyऔर निरुक्त — यथार्थ रूप से
bhāvāḥ ca kathaṁ proktāḥ — and how are the bhāvas declared?; kiṁ vā te api bhāvayanti — or do they also bhāvayanti?; saṅgrahaṁ kārikāṁ ca niruktaṁ ca tatvataḥ — the saṅgraha, the kārikā, and the nirukta, truly.
bhāvāḥ ca — और भाव; katham proktāḥ — किस प्रकार कहे गए; kiṁ vā — अथवा क्या; te bhāvayanti api — वे भावित करते हैं भी; saṅgraham kārikām ca eva — संग्रह और कारिका; niruktam ca eva — और निरुक्त; tatvataḥ — तत्त्वतः (यथार्थ रूप से)।
And how are the bhāvas spoken of? Or do they too 'bhāvayanti' — do they bring things into being, or pervade? And give us, truly, the saṅgraha (the summary), the kārikā (the memorial verse), and the nirukta (the derivation of the words).
और भाव किस प्रकार कहे गए हैं? अथवा वे क्या 'भावित' करते हैं — यह क्रिया 'उत्पन्न करना' भी हो सकती है और 'व्याप्त करना' भी। तथा संग्रह, कारिका और निरुक्त को यथार्थ रूप से (बताइए)।
bhāvayanti carries a deliberate double sense — 'produce / bring about' and 'pervade / suffuse.' The verse itself leaves the ambiguity standing; s29 will pull the two readings apart.
'भावयन्ति' में जान-बूझकर दुहरा अर्थ है — 'उत्पन्न करना / प्रकट करना' और 'व्याप्त करना / भर देना'। श्लोक स्वयं इस द्वैविध्य को खुला छोड़ देता है; s29 में दोनों अर्थ अलग किए जाएँगे।

tathāpi — even so; nāṭyatattve samyaṅ nirjñāte — once drama's essence is fully known; nirṇītaṁ [bhavati] — it stands determined.
tathā api — तो भी; nāṭyatattve — नाट्य का तत्त्व; samyak nirjñāte — भली-भाँति जान लिए जाने पर; nirṇītam — निर्णीत।
Even so, these matters only get truly settled once the essence of drama itself is fully understood.

na vacanamātrātnot from a bare statement (vacana-mātra) ablative of source — 'not merely from …'केवल वचन (कह देने) मात्र से नहीं
samyaṅ nirṇītam bhavati — it becomes properly settled; na vacanamātrāt — not from a bare assertion.
samyak nirṇītam bhavati — भली-भाँति निर्णीत होता है; na vacanamātrāt — केवल वचनमात्र से नहीं।
It becomes properly settled by understanding, not by a mere pronouncement. This is why the real answers wait for the chapters where drama's nature is laid out.
(कोई बात) तभी भली-भाँति निर्णीत होती है, केवल कह देने मात्र से नहीं।

ṣāḍava and the rest — rasa here in its everyday, well-current sense of flavour/taste, the meaning the word already carries before drama is in view. Abhinava sets this ordinary sense up in order to ask, next, how the same word comes to cover śṛṅgāra and the other dramatic rasas.

Those taste-rasas belong nowhere in drama, base or modified. But some others — śṛṅgāra and the rest — are used right next to the word rasa: 'the arising of śṛṅgāra-rasa' (4.269), 'then a raudra-rasa verse' (5.132). So even with śṛṅgāra and the rest, how could the word rasa fail to apply to them? The question of their rasa-hood presses exactly here.

The 'vai' in the verse is just metrical filler. And note: the word 'rasa' is properly at home for what the tongue tastes — flavour. That is its plain, well-known sense.

That is exactly why Bharata phrases it as the word itself coming into use — 'they are recited as the rasas.' He foregrounds the very word 'rasa' and says they 'are recited' by that name, which is what makes 'by what is their rasa-hood?' a genuine question.

saṅgrahāditi cā(di cā)bhidhatsva | nanu tairiha kiṁ prayojanam | āha—tattvata iti | (1-3)
saṅgrahāt iti'saṅgraha (compendium)' and the rest — verse 3'संग्रहात्' — यह मूल-पद
ca abhidhatsvacarry over the verb 'declare [these to us]' the text here is garbled by a dittography, printed '(di cā)'और 'अभिधत्स्व' — 'इन्हें भी बतलाइए' (यहाँ मुद्रित पाठ दोहराव से बिगड़ा है)
nanu tair iha kiṁ prayojanamobjection: what is the use of these (the saṅgraha, kārikā, nirukta) here?(शंका) इनसे यहाँ क्या प्रयोजन है?
āha—tattvataḥ itihe answers with the single word 'tattvataḥ' (truly, in its very essence)(इस पर) कहते हैं — 'तत्त्वतः' (यथार्थ रूप से)
saṅgrahāt iti — 'saṅgraha etc.'; ca abhidhatsva — supply 'declare these too'; nanu taiḥ iha kiṁ prayojanam — but what is the use of them here?; āha tattvataḥ iti — he replies, 'tattvataḥ.'
saṅgrahāt iti — 'संग्रहात्' यह पद; ca abhidhatsva — और 'अभिधत्स्व' (बतलाइए); nanu tair iha kiṁ prayojanam — इनसे यहाँ क्या प्रयोजन; āha—tattvataḥ iti — कहते हैं 'तत्त्वतः'।
For 'saṅgraha (compendium), kārikā (summary verse), and nirukta (word-derivation),' carry over the verb 'declare these to us.' One may object: what use are these three here? The answer is given in the one word 'tattvataḥ' — so that the matter may be known truly, in its very essence.
'संग्रहात्' — अर्थात् 'इन्हें भी बतलाइए' (अभिधत्स्व)। (शंका) इन संग्रह, कारिका और निरुक्त से यहाँ क्या प्रयोजन? (उत्तर में) कहते हैं — 'तत्त्वतः', अर्थात् इन्हें ठीक-ठीक यथार्थ रूप से बतलाइए।
The printed text 'saṅgrahād iti cā(di cā)bhidhatsva' carries a dittography — the '(di cā)' is a copyist's doubling — and the unit closes with the verse marker (1-3).
मुद्रित पाठ 'संग्रहादिति चा(दि चा)भिधत्स्व' में पुनरुक्ति-दोष है — '(दि चा)' लिपिकार का दोहराव है — और इकाई यहीं श्लोक-चिह्न (१-३) के साथ समाप्त होती है।
