The half-line before this (the lead-in) has just said that narma, refined playful banter, is shown in eighteen kinds. Now Rūpa begins naming them. Four come here: narma-sphañja — narma bursting suddenly into the open; sukha-udyoga — the eager drive toward a shared pleasure; bhaya-ārta — a teasing that leaves the beloved fear-stricken; and nava-saṅgama — the fresh first union. Each is just a name in the list; the verses that follow take them up in turn and illustrate them.
This line opens the enumeration of the eighteen kinds of narma announced in the lead-in half-verse (narma idam aṣṭādaśadhā ... abhidarśitam, 'this narma is clearly shown in eighteen ways'). The four names are plain nominatives in a list, so no case does argument work beyond naming. The last of them, nava-saṅgama, is illustrated in the very next verse (v192, rādhā-mādhavayor ... navaḥ saṅgamaḥ). Do not confuse narma-sphañja here with narma-sphoṭa, a distinct kind defined just after in v193 — the near-identical names are separate technical terms.
narma-sphañjaḥ, sukha-udyogaḥ, bhaya-ārtaḥ, nava-saṅgamaḥ [iti catvāraḥ narma-bhedāḥ].
narma-sphañja — the jest that bursts suddenly into the open; sukha-udyoga — the eager drive toward a shared delight; bhaya-ārta — the teasing that leaves the beloved stricken with fear; and nava-saṅgama — the fresh first coming-together: [these are named kinds of narma].
A definition kārikā that begins the enumeration of the eighteen kinds of narma announced in the lead-in half-verse, naming the first four (narma-sphañja, sukha-udyoga, bhaya-ārta, nava-saṅgama).
