hāsyād bhayena janitaṁ kathitaṁ bhaya-hāsyajam |
hāsyātspringing from hāsya, the comic — the rasa-base this kind shares with the other two kinds of narma ablative of source; hāsya is the common comic ground, marked here because what sets this variety apart is not the comic itself but the feeling that triggers itहास्य से (हास्य ही सबका साझा आधार है, इसलिए यहाँ पंचमी से 'हास्य से' कहा — भेद हास्य से नहीं, उसे जगाने वाले भाव से बनता है)
bhayenabecause it is set off by fear — fear is what occasions the jest instrumental of cause/means with janitam; the distinguishing factor of this third kindभय के द्वारा (यही तीसरे भेद का विशेष कारण है, जिससे यह जनित होता है)
janitamproduced, brought about past passive participle, neut., agreeing with bhaya-hāsyajamउत्पन्न हुआ (जो भय-हास्यज का विशेषण है)
kathitamis called, is termedकहा गया है
bhaya-hāsyajambhaya-hāsyaja, 'the comic born of fear' — the third and last kind of narma -ja 'born of'; bhaya (fear) + hāsya (the comic), the blend that gives it its nameभय-हास्यज (भय और हास्य के मेल से जन्मा — इसी से इसका नाम पड़ा)
hāsyāt — from the comic; bhayena janitam — but brought about by fear; kathitam bhaya-hāsyajam — is called bhaya-hāsyaja.
Now the third and last kind of narma. Like the other two, it is a form of hāsya, the comic — that is its shared base. What sets it apart is its trigger: here the jest is set off by fear (bhayena janitam), a fright that turns funny. Such a comic jest, Rūpa says, is called bhaya-hāsyaja, 'the comic born of fear.'
The third of narma's three kinds first listed at 8.170, after śṛṅgāra-hāsyaja and śuddha-hāsyaja (8.183). All three are species of hāsya, the comic; hence hāsyāt, 'from the comic,' is common ground, and what names each kind is the feeling fused with the comic — here bhaya, fear. The illustration at 8.187 shows the pattern: a naive cowherd boy, terrified at the sight of thousand-eyed Indra (whom he takes for the demon-king), cries out to be saved, and Kṛṣṇa smiles — the fright itself producing the comic.

He now divides bhaya-hāsyaja twice over. First into two: mukha, the principal form, where the fear-born jest is itself the main ornament; and aṅga, the subsidiary form, where it serves as a limb to some larger effect. Then each of these two is, 'as before' (pūrvavat), split threefold — by speech, by dress, and by gesture, the same three channels used for the earlier kinds. So the illustrations run: the principal by speech (8.187), then dress and gesture; then the subsidiary the same way (8.188 on).
mukha (= mukhya) and aṅga are the principal-versus-subsidiary distinction. mukha is the fear-comic standing on its own as the featured ornament — as at 8.187, where the cowherd boy's fright at 'Indra' and Kṛṣṇa's answering smile are the whole point of the moment. aṅga is the same fear-comic used as a supporting limb — as at 8.188, where Rādhā's alarm at Kṛṣṇa's teasing threat feeds into his embrace, the comic serving the union rather than starring in it. 'pūrvavat', 'as before,' carries over the threefold split by speech, dress, and gesture (vāc / veśa / ceṣṭā) applied to the earlier kinds, so the two forms yield six illustrations in all.

The comic jest that springs from hāsya but is set off by fear is called bhaya-hāsyaja, 'the comic born of fear.' It is of two kinds — mukha, the principal form, in which the fear-born jest is itself the featured ornament, and aṅga, the subsidiary form, in which it serves only as a limb supporting some larger effect; and this pair, for its part, is each threefold as before — by speech, by dress, and by gesture.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the third kind of narma, bhaya-hāsyaja: it names the variety and then lays out its subdivisions — twofold as mukha/aṅga, each threefold (vāc/veśa/ceṣṭā) pūrvavat.
