vṛddheO aged one — child Kṛṣṇa turns to the old woman who is trying to distract him vocative; the speaker of the verse is little Kṛṣṇa, and the one addressed is Mukharā (named in L4), the talkative old gopīहे बुढ़िया!
candra iti[by saying] "it is the moon" — the very trick he refuses to swallow iti quotes the elders' ploy — pointing at the round white thing overhead and calling it the moon to put the child off'यह तो चन्द्रमा है' — ऐसा कहकर; इति से बड़ों की वह चाल उद्धृत होती है जो ऊपर टँगी गोल सफ़ेद वस्तु को चन्द्रमा बताकर बच्चे को बहलाती है

ajñāsiṣamI have seen through it, I know full well [what it really is] aorist 1st-sg of jñā — affirmative; the joke turns on his being sure he has recognized itमैंने (उसे) पहचान लिया; ज्ञा धातु का लुङ् उत्तम-पुरुष, विधिरूप में — हँसी इसी पर टिकी है कि उसे पूरा विश्वास है कि उसने पहचान लिया
mad-bhayātbecause she was afraid of me — that is why it was hidden away ablative of cause (printed mad-bhayān before nikṣiptam); reaches ahead to nikṣiptam in L2 — stashed out of fear of the butter-thiefमेरे भय से; कारण की पञ्चमी (छपा हुआ मद्-भयान्, आगे निक्षिप्तम् से जुड़ता है) — इस मक्खनचोर के डर से ऊपर छिपा रखा
vṛddhe — O aged one; "candra iti" mām na pratāraya — don't fool me [by saying] "it's the moon"; ajñāsiṣam — I know full well [what it is]; mad-bhayāt [nikṣiptam] — [hidden] out of fear of me.
This is the comic verse in child Kṛṣṇa's own voice. He looks up at the round white moon and takes it for a ball of butter set high out of his reach. So he scolds the old woman trying to distract him: 'Don't fool me, granny, calling it the moon! I know exactly what that is. It was stashed up there out of fear of me — the butter-thief.'
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of śuddha-hāsya-ja narma — the playful banter that springs from pure laughter — by vācā, 'by speech'. Kārikā nc.8.183 (ref 262) declared this variety too threefold, tadvad eva ('exactly like the earlier kinds'), i.e. carried by speech (vāc), dress (veṣa), or gesture (ceṣṭā). The lead-in here — 'tatra vācā, yathā' ('there, by speech, as follows') — marks the first: the comedy rides entirely on what the child says, mistaking the moon for a hidden lump of butter.

He fills in the whole story he has invented. That white ball up there is fresh butter. Rādhā's mother put it there today, high up out of his reach. In his mind the moon in the sky is simply butter someone hid from him — the pure childish literalism that makes the verse funny.

He finishes with a plan: 'And I'll knock it down on the sly, with a nice long stick.' With that (iti) the child's speech closes. The frame now names it: this was the speech of Hari — Kṛṣṇa. The next line tells us who overheard it and how she took it.

indu-nyasta-dṛśo niśamya mukharā kṣemaṁ hasantī kriyāt ||
indu-nyasta-dṛśaḥof him whose eyes were fixed on the moon — gazing up the whole time he spoke genitive qualifying harer; indu 'moon' + nyasta 'set, laid upon' + dṛś 'gaze' — his stare on the moon is what fuels the whole mistakeजिसकी दृष्टि चन्द्रमा पर टिकी है, उस (हरि) की; हरेः का विशेषण, षष्ठी; इन्दु 'चन्द्रमा' + न्यस्त 'रखी हुई' + दृश् 'दृष्टि' — चन्द्रमा पर उसका टकटकी लगाना ही सारी भूल को हवा देता है
niśamyahaving heard [this] absolutive; its subject is Mukharā, its object harer vācam from L3सुनकर; ल्यबन्त (पूर्वकालिक), जिसका कर्ता मुखरा और कर्म L3 का हरेः वाचम् है
mukharāMukharā, the talkative old gopī nominative, the subject of kriyāt; a proper name (also 'the talkative one'), the elder who has overheard the childमुखरा; प्रथमा, क्रियात् का कर्ता; एक संज्ञा-नाम (और 'बातूनी' भी), वह बड़ी-बूढ़ी जिसने बच्चे की बात सुन ली
hasantībursting into laughter present participle feminine agreeing with mukharā — her delighted response to the jokeहँसती हुई; स्त्रीलिङ्ग वर्तमान-कृदन्त, मुखरा का विशेषण — इस विनोद पर उसका प्रसन्न भाव
kṣemaṁ kriyātmay she bring about well-being — the verse's closing blessing kriyāt is the benedictive (āśīr-liṅ) 3rd-sg; kṣemam 'welfare, blessing' its object — a maṅgala turning the joke into a benediction on the audienceकल्याण करे; क्रियात् आशीर्लिङ् प्रथम-पुरुष एकवचन; क्षेमम् 'कल्याण, मंगल' उसका कर्म — विनोद को श्रोताओं के लिए मंगलाशीष में बदलता मंगलाचरण
indu-nyasta-dṛśaḥ [hareḥ] vācam niśamya — having heard the speech of Hari, whose eyes were fixed on the moon; mukharā hasantī — Mukharā, laughing; kṣemaṁ kriyāt — may she grant [us] well-being.
Now the frame closes the verse. All the while Kṛṣṇa's eyes were locked on the moon — which is why he took it for butter. Old Mukharā overhears the whole speech and breaks out laughing. And the poet turns her laughter into a blessing: may that laughing Mukharā grant us well-being. So the pure comedy, carried start to finish by the child's words alone, is the udāharaṇa of śuddha-hāsya by speech.

"O granny, don't fob me off by saying 'it's the moon'! I know full well what that is: it is a ball of fresh butter that Rādhā's mother has stashed up in that high place today, out of fear of me — and I mean to knock it down on the sly with a good long stick." So spoke Hari, his eyes fixed all the while on the moon; and may that talkative old Mukharā, who overheard his words and burst out laughing, grant us well-being.
An udāharaṇa of śuddha-hāsya-ja narma carried vācā ('by speech'), illustrating kārikā nc.8.183 — the child's own words, mistaking the moon for hidden butter, are the whole of the comedy, and the benedictive kriyāt closes it as a maṅgala on the audience.
