kajjala-sāmala-majjhaṁ pallaa-sāṇujjalaṁ muuṁdassa |
kajjala-sāmala-majjhaṁdark in the middle as kajjala (collyrium, lamp-black) — describing the lip's centre Prakrit; chāyā kajjala-śyāmala-madhyaṁ. bahuvrīhi qualifying adhara — 'whose middle is black as collyrium'जिसका मध्यभाग काजल के समान श्याम (काला) है — यह अधर का विशेषण (बहुव्रीहि) है
pallaa-sāṇujjalaṁand glowing red all round like a tender pallava sprout chāyā pallava-sānujjvalaṁ (sa-anu-ujjvala 'aglow along [its edges]'); the reddish rim against the dark centreऔर जो किनारों पर पल्लव (कोंपल) के समान उज्ज्वल अर्थात् रक्तिम है — काले मध्य के सामने लाल किनारा
muuṁdassaof Mukunda (Kṛṣṇa) — whose lip this is chāyā mukundasya; genitive depending on adharaṁ in L2मुकुन्द के (उस अधर का — यह षष्ठी आगे L2 के 'अधरं' पर लगती है)
muuṁdassa [aharaṁ] — Mukunda's lower lip; kajjala-sāmala-majjhaṁ — dark as collyrium in its middle; pallaa-sāṇujjalaṁ — and glowing red like a pallava sprout around it.
Candrāvalī describes Mukunda's lower lip. Its middle is dark, black as kajjala — the eye-black women line their lashes with. All around, it glows red like a fresh pallava shoot. So: a red lip with a dark stain at its centre.
Why cited: cited to illustrate priyāparādha-nirbheda by veśa (the second mode of kārikā 261): the sulking heroine betrays that she has caught the lover's tryst by remarking on the tell-tale mark on his person.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of priyāparādha-nirbheda 'by veśa' (veśena) — the heroine exposing her lover's offense by pointing to his appearance — the second of the three modes the wise define in kārikā 261 (nc.8.179). Quoted from the Lalita-mādhava; the speaker is Candrāvalī, Kṛṣṇa's rival lover, and the stage direction (in the lead-in) is sotprāsa-smitam, 'with a sarcastic smile' — the key to the verse's barb.

The guñjā seed is scarlet with one black spot — red rim, dark centre, exactly the lip just describedगुञ्जाफल के समान ('बब' = इव 'के समान'; गुञ्जा का बीज लाल होता है और उस पर एक ही काला बिन्दु — ठीक वही लाल किनारा और काला मध्य)
aharaṁhis lower lip — the thing she is looking at chāyā adharaṁ; the object of pekkhantīअधर को (यह 'पेक्खन्ती' का कर्म है)
sahiO friend (she turns to her confidante) chāyā sakhi; vocativeहे सखी!
pekkhantīas I look at it chāyā prekṣantī; present participle, 'in the very act of seeing'देखती हुई (वर्तमानकालिक कृदन्त — देखने के उसी क्षण में)
pamodāmiI am delighted, I rejoice — said with a barb, not real joy chāyā pramodāmi; the sotprāsa (sarcastic) verb — the surface 'delight' carries the stingमैं अत्यन्त हर्षित होती हूँ (यही सोत्प्रास अर्थात् व्यंग्यभरी क्रिया है — ऊपरी 'हर्ष' के भीतर ही डंक छिपा है)
sahi — O friend; guṁjāphallaṁ bba aharaṁ — his lower lip, just like a guñjā berry; pekkhantī — as I look at it; pamodāmi — I am delighted.
O friend, she says, look at his lip — red all round with that dark spot in the middle, exactly like a guñjā berry. And seeing it, I am simply delighted! The words praise; the smile mocks. Read the two layers: on the surface, a lovely lip like a scarlet berry. Underneath — that black in the centre is kajjala, eye-black not his own, the smudge left where he kissed another woman's kohl-lined eyes. The 'delight' is sarcasm. By openly praising the mark on his appearance she exposes the offense — this is nirbheda 'by veśa', betraying the tryst through what shows on his person.
The guñjā simile is the hinge of the sarcasm. A guñjā berry is naturally scarlet with a single black eye, so on the surface it flatters the red lip. But the black 'eye' points at the incriminating dark stain in the middle of the lip — read as another woman's kajjala — so the same image that praises also convicts. The sotprāsa-smitam in the lead-in tells the reader which layer is meant.
sahi, kajjala-sāmala-majjhaṁ pallaa-sāṇujjalaṁ muuṁdassa aharaṁ guṁjāphallaṁ bba pekkhantī pamodāmi. (chāyā: sakhi, kajjala-śyāmala-madhyaṁ pallava-sānujjvalaṁ mukundasya adharaṁ guñjā-phalam iva prekṣantī pramodāmi.)
O friend — look at Mukunda's lower lip: dark as kajjala, lamp-black, in its very middle, yet glowing red like a fresh pallava shoot all round the edge, so that it is the very likeness of a guñjā berry, scarlet-bodied with a single black eye. And gazing at it, I am simply delighted! (She praises with her words and mocks with her smile: that black at the centre is another woman's kohl, the smudge of a stolen kiss, and by openly admiring the tell-tale mark she lays his tryst bare.)
