māyendra-jāla-pracura-citra-yuddha-kriyā-mayā ||
māyendra-jāla-pracuraabounding in māyā (illusion, trickery) and indra-jāla (conjuring, stage-magic) māyā-indrajāla-pracura, a compound: pracura 'plentiful' caps the pair — the style is thick with sorcery and deceitजिसमें माया और इन्द्रजाल की प्रचुरता है — अर्थात् जो जादू और छल-कपट से भरी हुई है
citra-yuddha-kriyāand full of citra-yuddha-kriyā — varied, striking scenes of combat, wonderful acts of fighting citra 'manifold, dazzling' qualifies yuddha-kriyā, the battle-action shown on stageऔर नाना प्रकार की विचित्र युद्ध-क्रिया से युक्त — रंगमंच पर दिखाये जाने वाले अनेकविध युद्ध-व्यापार से
-mayāmade up of, consisting of [all this] -maya suffix, fem. -mayā agreeing with the understood vṛttiḥ / ārabhaṭī: 'the style that consists of…'
(ārabhaṭī vṛttiḥ) — the ārabhaṭī style; māyendra-jāla-pracura — abounding in illusion and conjuring; citra-yuddha-kriyā-mayā — and made up of varied, striking scenes of combat.
Now Rūpa turns to the ārabhaṭī vṛtti — the bold, energetic dramatic mode. This half-line gives its stamp. It is thick with māyā, illusion and trickery, and with indra-jāla, conjuring and stage-magic. And it is packed with citra-yuddha-kriyā — varied, striking scenes of combat, dazzling feats of fighting. So the ārabhaṭī is the style of the marvelous and the martial: sorcery, deceit, and battle on stage. The whole line is one compound ending in -mayā, 'made of these things' — that is what the ārabhaṭī vṛtti is made of. The definition does not stop here; it runs on into the next kārikā, which adds bluster and cutting-down and then names the four aṅgas of the ārabhaṭī.
This half-line is quoted, not Rūpa's own composition — the lead-in athārabhaṭī— ('now, the ārabhaṭī') introduces it as the received lakṣaṇa of the ārabhaṭī vṛtti, the third of the four dramatic styles (bhāratī, ārabhaṭī, sātvatī, kaiśikī named at 8.146). vṛtti here is a 'style' or 'mode' of dramatic presentation, kept in IAST as a nāṭya term. The bhāratī, defined just before (verbal, in Sanskrit, four-limbed), gives way here to the ārabhaṭī, the vigorous style of magic and warfare; its definition continues in the next kārikā.
(ārabhaṭī vṛttiḥ) māyā-indra-jāla-pracura-citra-yuddha-kriyā-mayā (syāt) — māyā-indra-jāla-pracura, illusion and conjuring in abundance; citra-yuddha-kriyā, varied and striking scenes of combat; tat-mayā, made up of all these.
Now the ārabhaṭī: it is the style made up of illusion and stage-magic in abundance and of varied, dazzling scenes of combat — thick with māyā and indra-jāla, packed with wonderful feats of fighting.
Quoted half-line giving the received lakṣaṇa of the ārabhaṭī vṛtti (third of the four dramatic styles), introduced by the lead-in athārabhaṭī—; the definition runs on into the next kārikā.
