adhikāriṇaḥof the adhikārin — the leading character, the hero on whom the drama's outcome rests genitive with vadhaḥ: 'the death OF the principal character'अधिकारी का — जो कथा के फल का अधिकारी है, अर्थात् प्रधान नायक; 'वध' के साथ षष्ठी से जुड़कर 'नायक के वध' का अर्थ देता है
adhikāriṇaḥ vadhaḥ — the death of the leading character; viṣkambhaka-ādyaiḥ api — even by the viṣkambhaka and the other interludes; no vācyaḥ — must certainly not be narrated.
The death of the adhikārin — the leading character, the hero on whom the whole outcome of the play rests — must never be shown on stage. And this rule reaches further: it may not even be reported indirectly, through a viṣkambhaka or any of the other interlude-scenes that ordinarily carry offstage events to the audience. Even that back door is shut. The hero simply does not die within the drama.
The viṣkambhaka is one of the arthopakṣepakas, the 'connecting scenes' (with praveśaka, cūlikā, aṅkamukha, and aṅkāvatāra) used to convey, through minor characters, events too unwieldy or unfit to be staged directly — a battle, a journey, a death. The adhikārin is 'the one who holds the adhikāra,' the entitlement to the phala (the fruit or goal) of the action, i.e. the principal hero (nāyaka). The force of api is that even this indirect channel, otherwise the very device for relaying a death, is denied when it is the hero's death.

anyonyena tirodhānaṁ na kuryād rasa-vastunoḥ ||
anyonyenaby one another, mutually — each eclipsing the other instrumental of reciprocal actionपरस्पर एक-दूसरे के द्वारा — दोनों में से कोई भी दूसरे को न ढँके
tirodhānamthe eclipsing, the obscuring [of the one by the other] — the fault named accusative, object of kuryātतिरोधान — ढँक देना, आच्छादित कर देना; यह 'कुर्यात्' का कर्म है
na kuryātone should not bring about, must not cause optative of prohibition, impersonal 'one'नहीं करना चाहिए — निषेध की विधि, 'कोई' के अर्थ में सामान्य कर्ता
rasa-vastunoḥof the two — the rasa (the reigning mood the play serves) and the vastu (the plot, the story-matter) genitive dual dvandva: the two things that must not eclipse each otherरस और वस्तु का — ये दोनों (द्वन्द्व, षष्ठी द्विवचन) वे हैं जिन्हें एक-दूसरे को नहीं ढँकना चाहिए
rasa-vastunoḥ — of the rasa and the plot; anyonyena — by one another; tirodhānam — a mutual eclipsing; na kuryāt — one should not bring about.
The playwright must not let the rasa and the vastu — the reigning mood and the plot — eclipse one another. If the story-matter is piled up so thick that the mood cannot breathe, that is a fault. If the mood is indulged so freely that the plot loses its shape, that too is a fault. Neither may be allowed to hide the other; the two are to be held in balance.
rasa is the emotional flavour the drama exists to serve; vastu is the plot, the arrangement of events. The rule guards against two opposite excesses — a plot so busy it smothers the mood, and a mood so dwelt-upon that the action stalls — so that the two support rather than obscure each other.
adhikāriṇaḥ vadhaḥ viṣkambhaka-ādyaiḥ api no vācyaḥ; rasa-vastunoḥ anyonyena tirodhānaṁ na kuryāt.
The death of the adhikārin — the leading character on whom the whole outcome of the play rests — must not be reported even through a viṣkambhaka or any of the other interlude-scenes that ordinarily relay offstage events; and the playwright must never let the rasa and the vastu, the reigning mood and the plot, eclipse one another.
A pair of prohibitive rules for dramatic construction: the hero's death may not be shown or even indirectly narrated, and rasa and plot must be kept in balance so neither obscures the other.
