nāṭake’ṅkā na kartavyā pañca-nyūnā daśādhikāḥ ||
nāṭakein a full-scale nāṭaka — the fullest dramatic form, the play this whole count-rule governs locative naming the domain the rule applies toनाटक में (जहाँ यह नियम लागू होता है)
aṅkāḥthe acts — the play's divisions, which are the thing being counted nominative plural, subject of kartavyāḥअंक (नाट्य के विभाग), जो कर्तव्य के कर्ता हैं
na kartavyāḥshould not be made — the one prohibition that governs both the limits stated next gerundive (kṛtya) + na, agreeing with aṅkāḥ; its scope reaches both following adjectivesनहीं बनाने चाहिए — और यह निषेध आगे के दोनों विशेषणों पर फैलता है
pañca-nyūnāḥas fewer than five — so never drop below five acts predicative bahuvrīhi with aṅkāḥ (pañca 'five' + nyūna 'short of'), under the scope of na kartavyāḥपाँच से कम (पञ्च 'पाँच' + न्यून 'से कम'), जो निषेध के अन्तर्गत है

nāṭake — in a full-scale nāṭaka; aṅkāḥ — the acts; pañca-nyūnāḥ — [as] fewer than five; daśādhikāḥ — [nor] more than ten; na kartavyāḥ — should not be made.
Here Rūpa lays down the general rule for how many acts a nāṭaka may hold. The acts must not be made fewer than five. And they must not be made more than ten. So a proper full-scale play runs from five acts at the least to ten at the most.
This is the standard dramaturgical norm on act-count, shared with the classical nāṭya-śāstra tradition (e.g. the Daśarūpaka and Sāhitya-darpaṇa): the nāṭaka, the fullest dramatic form, carries between five and ten aṅkas, while shorter forms have fewer. The line opens the sāmānya-nirṇaya, the section of general rules governing a play as a whole, following the preceding kārikās on the garbhāṅka.
nāṭake aṅkāḥ pañca-nyūnāḥ daśa-adhikāḥ [ca] na kartavyāḥ.
In a full-scale nāṭaka the acts must not be made fewer than five, nor more than ten: a proper play runs from five acts at the least to ten at the most.
Quoted rule opening the sāmānya-nirṇaya, the section of general norms governing a play as a whole: it fixes the permissible act-count of the nāṭaka, the fullest dramatic form, at between five and ten aṅkas.
