L1definition
yatra syād aṅka ekasminn aṅkānāṁ sūcanākhilā |
yatrain whichever [device] it happens that — relative, answered by tad in L2; opens the lakṣaṇa (the condition side)जहाँ (जिस स्थिति में) — यह सम्बन्धवाचक शब्द लक्षण की शर्त खोलता है, और आगे दूसरी पंक्ति के 'तद्' से जुड़ता है
syātthere comes to be optative of √as — 'whenever there is'हो जाए (जब कभी हो) — √अस् का विधिलिङ्
aṅka ekasminnwithin one single act locative (ekasmin aṅke); the whole foreshadowing is packed into just one actएक ही अङ्क में (सप्तमी) — सारा पूर्वसूचन केवल एक अङ्क में ही समेट दिया जाता है
aṅkānāṁof the [coming] acts genitive plural — what gets foreshadowedआगे आने वाले अङ्कों की (षष्ठी बहुवचन) — जिनकी सूचना दी जाती है
sūcanā akhilāa complete foreshadowing, the full hint of them all nominative subject; akhilā = entire — nothing of the acts to come is left unindicatedसम्पूर्ण सूचना (कर्तृपद) — 'अखिला' अर्थात् समूची; आगे के अङ्कों का कुछ भी बिना संकेत के नहीं रहता
yatra — in whichever device; ekasmin aṅke — within one single act; aṅkānāṁ — of the coming acts; akhilā sūcanā — the complete foreshadowing; syāt — comes to be.
Picture a single act that quietly foreshadows everything the later acts will bring. In that one act the whole sequence to come is hinted — not a piece of it, but the entire arc (akhilā). L2 will name the device that does this.
This kārikā defines aṅkāsya (equivalent to the classical aṅkamukha), one of the arthopakṣepakas — the 'explanatory devices' introduced at v096 and defined one by one thereafter: viṣkambhaka (v097), cūlikā (v101), and now aṅkāsya. Its work is to compress into one act a foreshadowing of all the acts still to come. Its illustration follows in v103, drawn from the Lalita-Mādhava. (The unit is filed origin:quoted, an artifact of the 'athāṅkāsyam—' topic marker ending in a dash; the verse itself is Rūpa's own definition, as 'tad aṅkāsyam iti prāhuḥ' makes plain.)
L2definition
tad-aṅkāsyam iti prāhur bījārtha-khyāpakaṁ ca yat ||
tadthat [device] — correlative to yatra; the thing now being namedउसे — 'यत्र' का प्रतिनिर्देशक; वही वस्तु जिसका अब नामकरण किया जा रहा है
aṅkāsyam'aṅkāsya' [is what it is called] the technical term; predicate to tadअङ्कास्य — यही पारिभाषिक नाम; 'तद्' का विधेय
iti— by this name,इस प्रकार — यों कहकर
prāhuḥso the authorities call it perfect of √brū (3rd pl.) — the standard lakṣaṇa formula 'they call it X'कहते हैं (आचार्य) — √ब्रू का लिट्; 'उसे अमुक कहते हैं' — यही लक्षण की प्रसिद्ध शैली है
bījārtha-khyāpakaṁand it also announces the seed-meaning of the plot accusative predicate; bīja = the germ from which the whole action unfolds — khyāpaka, 'that makes it known'बीज के अर्थ को प्रकट करने वाला (विधेय) — बीज अर्थात् वह अङ्कुर जिससे सारी नाट्य-क्रिया विकसित होती है; ख्यापक अर्थात् जो उसे जना दे
caand — a second mark of it,और — यह दूसरा कार्य भी उसी अङ्कास्य के साथ जोड़ता है
yatnamely the device that does so second relative alongside yatra; ties this bīja-revealing function to the same aṅkāsyaजो — 'यत्र' के साथ दूसरा सम्बन्धवाचक; बीज-प्रकाशन के इस कार्य को उसी अङ्कास्य से बाँधता है
yat ca — and [the device] which; bījārtha-khyāpakaṁ — announces the seed-meaning of the plot; tad — that; aṅkāsyam iti — 'aṅkāsya', by this name; prāhuḥ — the authorities call.
That device they call aṅkāsya. And it carries a second mark as well: it makes known the bīja — the 'seed' of the plot, the germ from which the whole action grows. So aṅkāsya does two things at once. It foreshadows the acts still to come, and it reveals the seed of the story.
bīja (here bījārtha, 'the meaning/matter of the seed') is the first of the five arthaprakṛtis, the plot-elements of Sanskrit dramaturgy (bīja, bindu, patākā, prakarī, kārya) — the germinal cause from which the entire dramatic action unfolds. aṅkāsya is thus defined by two functions folded into one act: foreshadowing the coming acts (L1) and disclosing this seed (L2).
yatra ekasmin aṅke aṅkānāṁ akhilā sūcanā syāt, yat ca bījārtha-khyāpakaṁ [syāt], tad aṅkāsyam iti prāhuḥ.
When, within a single act, there arises a complete foreshadowing of all the acts still to come — and when that same act also makes known the bīja, the seed from which the whole plot grows — that device the authorities call aṅkāsya.
A definition-kārikā (Rūpa's own) fixing the lakṣaṇa of aṅkāsya, one of the arthopakṣepakas: an act that both foreshadows all the coming acts and discloses the plot's seed (bīja).
