aṅkethere in the act, before the audience locative — the place where it cannot be shownअङ्क में, अर्थात् रंगमंच पर — जहाँ उसे दिखाया नहीं जा सकता

vācyambe conveyed, has to be told gerundive, the second condition — it still has to reach the audienceकहा जाना चाहिए — यह दूसरी शर्त, फिर भी वह दर्शकों तक पहुँचनी ही चाहिए
evatruly, come what may emphatic, sharpening avaśyam vācyam — it genuinely cannot be left outही — 'अवश्यं वाच्यम्' को तीव्र करता है, कि वह सचमुच छोड़ी नहीं जा सकती
cetif [both hold] — sets up the conditional that L2 answersयदि — यह शर्त रखता है, जिसका उत्तर आगे की पंक्ति देती है
tad — that matter; aṅke adarśanīyam — cannot be shown in the act; avaśyam eva vācyam cet — yet, come what may, must indeed be told, if [so].
Take some piece of the story that cannot be staged directly — a battle, a death, a distant event, or anything unfit for display in the act. Suppose, even so, that it simply has to reach the audience; it cannot just be dropped. That is the case Rūpa is setting up. L2 gives the poet's remedy.
This kārikā gives the operative rule for the arthopakṣepakas, the five 'explanatory devices' by which a play conveys off-stage matter — viṣkambhaka, praveśaka, cūlikā, aṅkāsya (aṅkāvatāra) and aṅkamukha, defined one by one in the verses that follow (from v097, viṣkambhaka). It follows directly on v095 (ref 193), which divided all subject-matter into sūcya (merely to be indicated) and asūcya (to be shown): what is rasa-less is sūcya. Here Rūpa names the two conditions that make matter sūcya in practice — unshowable in the act, yet needing to be told.

arthopakṣepakaiḥby means of the arthopakṣepakas, the 'explanatory interludes' instrumental of means — the device that does the jobअर्थोपक्षेपकों के द्वारा — वह उपाय जो यह काम करता है
etatthis very matter neuter object, resuming tad from L1इसे (नपुंसक कर्म), जो पहली पंक्ति के 'तद्' को फिर उठाता है
sūcayetshould hint at it, indicate it indirectly optative causative of √sūc — the prescription; not 'show', but 'give a sign of'संकेत करना चाहिए — यह विधान है; 'दिखाना' नहीं, बल्कि 'उसका संकेत देना'
suṣṭhuand do it deftly, aptly adverb qualifying sūcayet — skill, not mere mention, is requiredभली-भाँति, कुशलता से — sūcayet का विशेषण; केवल उल्लेख नहीं, निपुणता अपेक्षित है
paṇḍitaḥthe learned playwright nominative subject — the skilled dramatist who knows the craftपण्डित, अर्थात् कुशल नाटककार जो इस कला को जानता है — कर्ता
paṇḍitaḥ — the learned playwright; etat — this matter; arthopakṣepakaiḥ — by the explanatory interludes; suṣṭhu sūcayet — should aptly indicate.
The skilled playwright should get that matter across by means of the arthopakṣepakas — the explanatory interludes. He does not stage it; he indicates it, gives a clear sign of it. And he does so deftly, with craft. So the rule across both lines: whatever cannot be shown in the act but must still be told, the learned poet conveys through these devices — the five of which the following verses define in turn.
arthopakṣepaka — literally 'that which throws in (upa-kṣepa) the matter (artha)'; the technical name for the group of five devices that supply what the stage cannot display. suṣṭhu, 'aptly', flags that the choice among the five is itself a matter of dramatic skill: each suits a different kind of off-stage content, as the definitions from v097 onward will show.
tad aṅke adarśanīyam, avaśyam eva vācyam ca cet, [tarhi] paṇḍitaḥ etat arthopakṣepakaiḥ suṣṭhu sūcayet.
If some piece of the story cannot be shown directly in the act, and yet, come what may, it truly must be conveyed to the audience, then the learned playwright should get that very matter across deftly by means of the arthopakṣepakas — the explanatory interludes — hinting at it rather than staging it.
The operative kārikā for the arthopakṣepakas: it names the two conditions that make off-stage matter sūcya (unshowable in the act, yet needing to be told) and prescribes the five explanatory devices — viṣkambhaka, praveśaka, cūlikā, aṅkāsya, aṅkamukha — defined one by one from v097 on.
