vastu sarvaṁ dvidhā sūcyam asūcyam iti bhedataḥ |
vastuthe vastu — the plot-matter, the stuff of the storyवस्तु — नाटक की कथावस्तु, प्रतिपाद्य विषय
sarvaṁthe whole of it, every bit adjective agreeing with vastu — 'all subject-matter'समस्त — सारी की सारी कथावस्तु
dvidhāfalls into two kinds adverb: 'in two ways'दो प्रकार की — दो भेदों में बँटी हुई
sūcyamthe sūcya — what is only to be hinted at, reported, not enacted on stageसूच्य — जो केवल संकेत से जताई जाए, रंगमंच पर न दिखाई जाए
asūcyamand the asūcya — what is to be shown directly, played out before the audienceअसूच्य — जो प्रत्यक्ष अभिनय से दिखाई जाए
itinamely — these two, ends the naming of the pairइस प्रकार — 'सूच्य और असूच्य' इन नामों से
bhedataḥby this splitting into kinds ablative of manner: 'by way of the distinction'भेद के कारण — इस विभाजन के अनुसार
sarvaṁ vastu — all plot-matter; sūcyam asūcyam iti bhedataḥ — by the distinction into sūcya and asūcya; dvidhā — is of two kinds.
All the plot-matter of a play splits into two kinds. One is sūcya — what is merely to be hinted at, reported through a device rather than acted out. The other is asūcya — what is to be shown directly on stage, played out before the audience.
This is the classical nāṭya-śāstra rule on what belongs on stage. Some matter is dṛśya/asūcya — enacted in front of the audience; other matter is sūcya — kept off stage and only intimated, whether because it cannot be staged (a battle, a death, a long journey, the passing of time) or because it would spoil the mood. Rūpa places this kārikā under the arthopakṣepakāḥ, the intimating devices (viṣkambhaka, praveśaka, cūlikā, aṅkāsya, aṅkāvatāra) — the very tools by which sūcya matter is conveyed. The next line tells us which matter counts as sūcya.

atra — here; yat vastu rasa-hīnaṁ bhavet — whatever plot-matter turns out to be empty of rasa; tat — that; sūcyam ucyate — is called sūcya.
Now which matter is sūcya? Whatever plot-matter carries no rasa — no devotional flavour — that is the kind called sūcya. Because it adds nothing to the mood, it is kept off stage and merely intimated by a device, rather than acted out.
The test is rasa, not mere stageability: matter that would feed no rasa is the matter to be hinted rather than shown. By implication the asūcya — what is enacted — is the rasa-bearing matter, the scenes worth playing out in full.

Rūpa's defining kārikā, placed under the arthopakṣepakāḥ (intimating devices): it splits all dramatic vastu into sūcya and asūcya, and fixes rasa-lessness as the test for what counts as sūcya.
