This kārikā defines the viṣkambhaka, the first of the intermediary scenes. Its one job is to hint (sūcaka). What does it hint at? A portion (aṁśa) of the plot-matter (vastu) — either what is already past (bhūta) or what is yet to come (bhāvi). So the viṣkambhaka is a short interlude that points to off-stage events, past or future, and threads them into the main action.

viṣkambhaka (also viṣkambha) is a term of Sanskrit dramaturgy from the Nāṭyaśāstra: the first of the five arthopakṣepakas — the 'intermediary devices' (viṣkambha, cūlikā, aṅkāsya, aṅkāvatāra, praveśaka, all named in the lead-in) that condense and report plot events which fall between or outside the acts and so are not staged in full. Rūpa here gives its lakṣaṇa: it foreshadows or recalls a slice of the story that is past or yet to come.
विष्कम्भक (जिसे विष्कम्भ भी कहते हैं) नाट्यशास्त्र का पारिभाषिक शब्द है। यह पाँच अर्थोपक्षेपकों में प्रथम है — ये 'बीच के साधन' (विष्कम्भ, चूलिका, अङ्कास्य, अङ्कावतार, प्रवेशक — सभी उपक्रम में गिनाए गए) हैं, जो अङ्कों के बीच या बाहर पड़ने वाली, अतः पूरी तरह रंगमंच पर न दिखाई जाने वाली कथा-घटनाओं को संक्षेप में सूचित कर देते हैं। रूप गोस्वामी यहाँ इसका लक्षण देते हैं — यह कथा के भूत अथवा भावी अंश का पूर्वसंकेत या स्मरण कराता है।
