kāntiṁ pītāṁśuka-sphītāṁ bibhratī vikṣitā vane |
kāntimthe radiance — the thing she carriesकान्ति (दीप्ति) को
pītāṁśuka-sphītāma radiance grown full and golden — describing that kānti the śleṣa turns on this compound: cut it pītām + [he] śuka, 'a yellow [radiance], O parrot', and it is Kṛṣṇa's question; keep it whole, pītāṁśuka, 'clad in yellow', a vocative to Kṛṣṇa himself, and it is the parrot's answerपीले वस्त्रों से खिली हुई (ऐसी कान्ति को) — अथवा श्लेष से तोड़ने पर 'पीत (कान्ति), हे शुक', जो कृष्ण का प्रश्न बनता है; और अखण्ड रखने पर 'पीताम्बरधारी' (हे कृष्ण) — यह सम्बोधन शुक का उत्तर बनता है
bibhratīshe who is wearing itधारण करती हुई (वह स्त्री)
vīkṣitāhas she been seen? — and, read back, 'she has been seen' the source writes vikṣitā for vīkṣitā, 'seen, beheld'; the single verb serves the question and the answer alikeदेखी गई (मूल में वीक्षिता के स्थान पर विक्षिता लिखा है; यही एक क्रिया प्रश्न और उत्तर दोनों में काम आती है)
vanein the forestवन में
kāntim — the radiance; pītāṁśuka-sphītām — grown full and golden; bibhratī — she who wears it; vane — in the forest; vīkṣitā — has [she] been seen / [she] has been seen.
This is Kṛṣṇa speaking as he steps up to a pomegranate in front of him. Read one way the words are his question to a parrot: 'That girl who wears a full golden glow — has she been seen here in the forest?' Read the other way the very same words are the parrot's reply. The whole pivot is pītāṁśuka. Cut it pītām + śuka and you get 'a yellow glow, O parrot' — Kṛṣṇa asking. Leave it whole, pītāṁśuka, and it means 'O you in the yellow cloth' — the parrot answering Kṛṣṇa, who wears the yellow garment.
पीले वस्त्रों से खिली हुई कान्ति को धारण करने वाली वह (मृगनयनी) वन में देखी गई। ठीक यही शब्द-पंक्ति श्लेष के बल पर एक साथ दो अर्थ देती है — 'पीत, हे शुक' पढ़ने पर यह कृष्ण का प्रश्न बनती है, और 'हे पीताम्बरधारी' पढ़ने पर वही शुक का उत्तर बन जाती है।
An udāharaṇa of pṛcchā, the sandhy-aṅga defined just above at 181q2 (v077): 'praśna evottare yatra sā pṛcchā parikīrtitā' — 'when the question stands inside the very answer, that is called pṛcchā.' The point being illustrated is that one and the same string of words is at once Kṛṣṇa's question and the parrot's answer; the next unit (182, v079) writes the two readings out in full.

sāshe — that oneवह (स्त्री)
tvayāby you — paired with 'seen' in the question, with 'sought' in the answerतुम्हारे द्वारा
mṛga-vilocanāthe doe-eyed girl mṛga-vilocanā, 'having deer-like eyes'; mṛga echoes mṛgyamāṇā and the mṛgayā, the 'hunt/search', running through the whole verseमृग जैसे नेत्रों वाली (मृगनयनी) — 'मृग' शब्द मृग्यमाणा (खोजी जाती) और पूरे पद्य में चल रही मृगया (खोज/आखेट) की प्रतिध्वनि करता है
sā mṛga-vilocanā — that doe-eyed girl; adya — today; mayā mṛgyamāṇā — sought by me, tvayā [vīkṣitā] — seen by you? (the question) // tvayā mṛgyamāṇā — sought by you, mayā [vīkṣitā] — seen by me (the answer).
mayā — मेरे द्वारा; adya — आज; mṛgyamāṇā — खोजी जाती हुई; sā — वह; tvayā — तुम्हारे द्वारा; mṛga-vilocanā — मृगनयनी। अर्थात् — आज मेरे द्वारा खोजी जाती हुई वह मृगनयनी (क्या) तुम्हारे द्वारा (वन में) देखी गई?
The doe-eyed girl I am hunting for today — even the search-word mṛgyamāṇā echoes mṛga, the deer and the hunt. Now swap who does what and the sentence flips speaker without changing a word. 'Sought by me... seen by you?' is Kṛṣṇa's question. 'Sought by you... seen by me' is the parrot's reply. Only mayā and tvayā trade places; every other word stays put. That one set of words carrying both the asking and the answering is exactly the pṛcchā the kārikā at 181q2 just defined.

That doe-eyed girl who wears a full, golden radiance — the one I am searching for today, here in the forest — has she been seen by you? Read through the śleṣa the very same words become the parrot's reply rather than Kṛṣṇa's question: the one you are searching for has been seen by me. The whole turn rests on pītāṁśuka: split as pītām + śuka it is Kṛṣṇa asking a parrot about 'a yellow glow, O parrot'; kept whole as pītāṁśuka it is the parrot answering 'O you clad in yellow'. Only mayā and tvayā trade places; every other word stays fixed, so a single string of syllables carries both the asking and the answering.
An udāharaṇa of pṛcchā (a sandhy-aṅga), quoted from Lalita-Mādhava act 9: one and the same śleṣa-line is at once Kṛṣṇa's question and the parrot's answer, illustrating the definition given just above at 181q2 (v077) that the question stands inside the very answer.
एक ही श्लिष्ट पद्य जो एक साथ प्रश्न और उत्तर दोनों बनता है — इसी लक्षण का उदाहरण।
