L1definition
sva-pakṣe darśanaṁ hetor dṛṣṭāntaḥ sādhya-siddhaye ||
sva-pakṣein a like case on one's own side — a corroborating instance where the reason is already seen to hold locative naming where the showing happens; the sva-pakṣa (nyāya's sapakṣa), an agreed parallel that backs the arguer's sideअपने पक्ष में — अर्थात् जिस समान उदाहरण को दोनों पक्ष मानते हों, उसी सपक्ष में (सप्तमी, दर्शन का आधार बताती हुई)
darśanaṁthe pointing-out, the displaying — this showing is what the definition predicates as dṛṣṭānta nominative; the subject-term being definedदिखाना (दर्शन) — यही वह पद है जिसकी परिभाषा दी जा रही है
hetoḥof the reason (hetu) — it is the hetu that gets shown at work in that like case genitive with darśanam: the showing is a showing of the hetuहेतु का — अर्थात् जिस साधक कारण का दर्शन कराया जाता है, उसका (षष्ठी, दर्शन के साथ)
dṛṣṭāntaḥis dṛṣṭānta — 'the example', the illustrative instance held up in the speech nominative predicate; the ornament being namedदृष्टान्त — यही वह भूषण है जिसका नाम रखा जा रहा है
sādhya-siddhayein order to establish the point to be proved — to make the sādhya good sādhya 'what is to be proved' + siddhi 'establishing'; dative of purpose stating why the reason is shownसाध्य की सिद्धि के लिए — अर्थात् जो सिद्ध करना है उसे स्थापित करने के प्रयोजन से (चतुर्थी, हेतु दिखाने का कारण बताती हुई)
sādhya-siddhaye — in order to establish the point to be proved; sva-pakṣe — in a like case on one's own side; hetoḥ darśanam — the showing of the reason; dṛṣṭāntaḥ — is dṛṣṭānta.
Now Rūpa defines dṛṣṭānta, 'the example', the fourth of the thirty-six ornaments. You want to establish some point (the sādhya). So you point to the reason (hetu) at work in a parallel case on your own side — an instance everyone already grants. Showing the reason operating in that agreed case, in order to secure the point you are after, is dṛṣṭānta. In short: to prove your claim you display the reason holding good in a like example. The next unit (v035) illustrates it — Kṛṣṇa argues that even a steady person can be shaken, and points to the all-enduring earth, which is seen to quake, as his example.
dṛṣṭānta is one of the ṣaṭ-triṁśat bhūṣaṇāni — the thirty-six lakṣaṇas or 'marks' of dramatic speech listed at nc.8.17-8.20 — and stands fourth in the running sequence being defined here: śobhā (158), saṁśaya (159), dṛṣṭānta (160), abhiprāya (161). Its definition is lifted straight from nyāya, the logic of inference. There the dṛṣṭānta is the familiar corroborating example — the kitchen where smoke and fire are always seen together — that anchors an inference: the hetu is the probans (smoke), the sādhya the probandum (fire), and the sapakṣa (sva-pakṣa) the like case where the two are known to go together. Home meaning (nyāya): the example that grounds a logical proof. Meaning here (nāṭya): a turn of dramatic speech in which a character, to carry a point, displays the reason at work in just such an agreed parallel case.
sādhya-siddhaye sva-pakṣe hetoḥ darśanam dṛṣṭāntaḥ [iti].
The showing of the reason (hetu) at work in a like case on one's own side — an agreed parallel instance where it already holds — undertaken in order to establish the point to be proved (sādhya): this is called dṛṣṭānta, 'the example'.
Rūpa's defining kārikā of dṛṣṭānta, the fourth of the thirty-six bhūṣaṇas of dramatic speech — the nyāya-borrowed device of proving a point by displaying the reason operating in an agreed corroborating case.
