sthūlas tāla-bhujonnatir giri-taṭī-vakṣāḥ kva yakṣādhamaḥ
sthūlaḥhulking, coarse-bodied — a gross mass of a creature nom., describing yakṣa-adhamaḥजो स्थूल है — भारी-भरकम, विशालकाय
tāla-bhuja-unnatiḥhis arms towering tall as palmyra palms bahuvrīhi describing the yakṣa: tāla 'palmyra palm' (proverbially very tall) + bhuja 'arm' + unnati 'height, rising up'जिसकी भुजाओं की ऊँचाई ताड़ के वृक्ष जैसी है — ताड़ अपनी अत्यधिक ऊँचाई के लिए प्रसिद्ध है
giri-taṭī-vakṣāḥhis chest broad and steep as a mountain-slope bahuvrīhi: giri-taṭī 'mountain ledge, hillside' + vakṣas 'chest'जिसका वक्षःस्थल पर्वत की ढलान (चट्टान) के समान है
kvawhere is there any comparing — the first arm of the kva… kva… idiom: two 'where?'s set side by side voice not a place but a vast incongruity — 'what possible likeness between this and that?'
yakṣa-adhamaḥthis vile yakṣa, the lowest of his kind nom.; adhama 'basest, meanest' — a yakṣa (a hulking demigod-ogre) of the worst sortऔर कहाँ यह नीच यक्ष — अधम अर्थात् निकृष्ट कोटि का, विकराल यक्ष
kva yakṣa-adhamaḥ — where [stands] this vile yakṣa, sthūlaḥ — hulking, tāla-bhuja-unnatiḥ — his arms tall as palm trees, giri-taṭī-vakṣāḥ — his chest broad as a mountain-slope; [and where, on the other side, the child — L2].
The voice sets up a measuring of two figures that will not measure. On the one side: a vile yakṣa, an ogre of the lowest sort — a hulking, coarse mass of a creature, his arms rising tall as palmyra palms, his chest broad and steep as a mountain-slope. 'Where is he,' the speaker begins, 'and where —' The kva… kva is not asking a place. It is saying: what likeness could there ever be between this monster and the one named next? The disparity is the seed of the doubt.
An udāharaṇa of saṁśaya (sandeha), 'doubt,' the sandhy-aṅga defined just before in nc.8.32 (159): 'aniścayāt tu yad vākyaṁ sandehasya nigadyate' — a speech uttered out of non-determination (aniścaya) is what is called sandeha. saṁśaya is one of the sixty-four sandhy-aṅgas, the 'limbs of the junctures' of Sanskrit dramaturgy; as this limb it names the beat where a character voices uncertainty aloud. Here an off-stage voice, unable to reconcile the two figures before it — a monstrous yakṣa and a tender child — and seeing no one at hand who could help, breaks off into 'we do not know' (na jānīmahe): speech born of uncertainty. Quoted from the second act (2.29), spoken off-stage (nepathye).

kvāyaṁ bāla-tamāla-kandala-mṛduḥ kandarpa-kāntaḥ śiśuḥ |
kvaand where, set against him, the second arm of the kva… kva pair — it completes the measuring of the gulf between the twoऔर कहाँ — यह दूसरा 'कहाँ' दोनों के बीच की खाई को नाप देता है
ayaṁthis one right here nom., the child, pointed to in contrast with the yakṣaयह — यक्ष के विपरीत जिस शिशु की ओर संकेत किया जा रहा है
bāla-tamāla-kandala-mṛduḥtender as the fresh shoot of a young tamāla tree bahuvrīhi: bāla 'young' + tamāla (a dark-barked tree) + kandala 'new sprout, shoot' + mṛdu 'soft, delicate'जो नये तमाल-वृक्ष के नवीन अंकुर-सा कोमल है — तमाल गहरे-श्याम रंग का वृक्ष
kandarpa-kāntaḥlovely as Kandarpa, the god of love himself kāntaḥ 'charming, beautiful'; Kandarpa = Kāmadeva, the byword for beautyजो कामदेव-सा मनोहर है — कन्दर्प अर्थात् कामदेव, सौन्दर्य की उपमा
śiśuḥthis little child nom.; the delicacy of the word is itself the point against the ogre's bulkयह शिशु — 'शिशु' शब्द की कोमलता ही यक्ष के स्थूल विकरालपन के विरुद्ध बात कह देती है
kva ayaṁ śiśuḥ — and where [stands] this little child, bāla-tamāla-kandala-mṛduḥ — soft as a young tamāla's fresh shoot, kandarpa-kāntaḥ — lovely as the god of love?
Now the second side of the impossible comparison. 'And where,' the voice goes on, 'is this child?' — a boy tender as the fresh shoot of a young tamāla, delicate, easily bruised; and lovely as Kandarpa, the god of love himself. Set the two together and the mind refuses them: the mountain-chested ogre with palm-tree arms, and this soft, beautiful little boy. That is what the two kva's have built — not a question of where, but a gulf the speaker cannot cross. How could these two ever be brought to a reckoning?

nāsty anyaḥ sahakāritā-paṭur iha prāṇī na jānīmahe
na astithere is not —नहीं है
sahakāritā-paṭuḥone apt to lend a hand — capable of giving help nom. describing prāṇī: sahakāritā 'being a helper, rendering assistance' + paṭu 'skilled, competent'जो सहायता करने में कुशल हो — सहकारिता अर्थात् सहायता देना, पटु अर्थात् निपुण
ihahere, in this placeयहाँ
prāṇīa single living creature, one soul nom.; with na asti — 'not one being exists here who…'
na jānīmahewe simply do not know [what to make of it] 1st pl. of √jñā; this is the load-bearing phrase — the aniścaya (non-determination) of the definition surfacing as spoken words, the very mark of saṁśayaहम नहीं जानते — यही भार उठानेवाला वाक्य है; परिभाषा का अनिश्चय ही यहाँ शब्दों में फूट पड़ा है, जो संशय का ठीक लक्षण है
iha sahakāritā-paṭuḥ anyaḥ prāṇī na asti — here there is no other creature apt to give help; na jānīmahe — we do not know [what to think].
And the reason the doubt cannot settle: there is no one here to turn it. Not a single other creature in this place is fit to lend a hand — no helper stands by the child against the monster. So the voice arrives at the words that name its own state: na jānīmahe, 'we do not know.' This is the hinge of the whole verse for its purpose here. The kārikā defined saṁśaya as a speech born of aniścaya, non-determination; and here that non-determination is spoken outright — 'we do not know.'

hāalas! — a cry of dismay opening the anxious addressहाय — व्याकुल पुकार खोलनेवाला विषाद का उद्गार
goṣṭheśvariO queen of the cowherd station voc.; goṣṭha 'the cattle-settlement' + īśvarī 'mistress' — the matriarch of the cow-village is being called uponहे गोष्ठेश्वरी — गोष्ठ अर्थात् गोकुल, ईश्वरी अर्थात् स्वामिनी; गोकुल की स्वामिनी को पुकारा जा रहा है
kīdṛkof what kind — for good or for ill? interrogative adjective agreeing with pākaḥ; this word carries the doubt: the outcome could go either way and the speaker cannot tell whichकैसा — यही शब्द सन्देह ढो रहा है: परिणाम किसी भी ओर मुड़ सकता है और बोलनेवाला बता नहीं पाता कि किस ओर

pākaḥthe ripening, the fruit now coming due nom.; pāka 'maturing, cooking to readiness' — the moment a long-stored merit yields its resultपरिपाक — पाक अर्थात् पककर तैयार होना; वह क्षण जब चिरसंचित पुण्य अपना फल देता है
tavayour gen., with tapasāṁ — the austerities are hersतुम्हारी — तपस्याओं के साथ; वे तप उसी के हैं
unmīlatiis opening up, unfolding before our eyes un-√mīl 'to open (as eyes, a bud), come to light' — the result is just now dawning, its shape not yet clearप्रकट हो रहा है — उद्-मील् अर्थात् (नेत्र या कली का) खुलना, प्रकाश में आना; फल अभी-अभी उदित हो रहा है, उसका रूप अभी स्पष्ट नहीं
hā goṣṭheśvari — alas, O queen of the cowherd station, adya — now, tava tapasāṁ — of your austerities, kīdṛk pākaḥ — what kind of fruit, unmīlati — is unfolding?
The doubt breaks into a cry. 'Alas, O queen of the cow-village!' — the child's mother is called on by her standing as the matriarch of Vraja. 'What kind of ripening of your austerities is unfolding today?' The fruit of her long penances is coming due at this very moment, before everyone's eyes — but its shape is not yet clear. Will it prove a blessing or a ruin? kīdṛk, 'of what kind,' holds the whole uncertainty: the speaker cannot tell, and says so. The verse closes on the same note it was chosen to illustrate — saṁśaya, a speech that cannot come to rest because its outcome is not yet determined.

And there is not one other living soul here fit to lend a hand — so we simply do not know what to make of it. An udāharaṇa of saṁśaya (sandeha), 'doubt,' the sandhy-aṅga defined just before in nc.8.32 — a speech born of aniścaya (non-determination); here an off-stage voice (nepathye) in Act 2 (2.29), unable to reconcile the monstrous yakṣa with the tender child and seeing no helper at hand, breaks into 'we do not know.'
