Now Rūpa defines dūtya, the office of the go-between. It is being a helper in a matter that is hard to bring off. When the aim — say, arranging a meeting of the lovers — cannot be reached by ordinary means, someone steps in and co-operates to make it happen. That co-operating in the difficult task is dūtya. The stress falls on durghaṭa, 'hard to accomplish': helping with an easy errand does not make one a dūtī; it is lending a hand where the goal would otherwise fail that earns the name.
दूत्य का अर्थ है सहकारिता — किसी प्रयोजन की सिद्धि में साथ देना। परन्तु यह हर सहायता नहीं है। जिस कार्य का सिद्ध होना कठिन हो, बिना ऐसी सहायता के जो घटित न हो सके, उसी में दिया गया सहयोग दूत्य कहलाता है।
dūtya is the function of the dūtī, the go-between who works to unite the hero and heroine. Rūpa defines it not by who does it but by what it does — sahakāritva, co-operating toward an end — and narrows that to the durghaṭa case, the goal that could not be reached without such help. This is a taṭastha-style marker: the office is recognized by the difficulty it serves, not by the messenger's rank or method.
दूत्य वह कार्य है जिसे दूती करती है — वह मध्यस्थ जो नायक और नायिका के मिलन के लिए यत्न करती है। रूप गोस्वामी इसका लक्षण इससे नहीं करते कि इसे करने वाला कौन है, अपितु इससे कि यह करती क्या है — सहकारिता, अर्थात् किसी प्रयोजन की ओर साथ देना; और उसे दुर्घट अवस्था तक सीमित करते हैं, अर्थात् वह लक्ष्य जो ऐसी सहायता के बिना प्राप्त ही न हो सकता। यह तटस्थ-लक्षण जैसा चिह्न है — यह कार्य अपनी उस कठिनता से पहचाना जाता है जिसकी वह पूर्ति करता है, न कि दूती के पद या उपाय से।
