iṣṭārtha-siddhi-paryantā cintā dhīr iti kathyate ||
iṣṭārtha-siddhi-paryantālasting right up until the desired goal is actually won bahuvrīhi in -paryantā, 'having ... as its far limit'; feminine, describing cintāजिसकी अन्तिम सीमा अभीष्ट अर्थ की सिद्धि तक फैली हो — अर्थात् वह चिन्ता जो इष्ट फल की प्राप्ति होने तक बनी रहती है (बहुव्रीहि, स्त्रीलिंग में चिन्ता का विशेषण)
cintāan anxious, sustained thinking-it-over — the state being definedचिन्ता — किसी विषय का बार-बार मनन, सोच
iti kathyateis what one calls it — the naming formula that closes the definition iti + passive kathyate marks this as a quoted lakṣaṇa, 'X is termed dhī'इस प्रकार (धी) कही जाती है — 'इति' के साथ कर्मवाच्य क्रिया लक्षण को उद्धृत करती है, कि इसे 'धी' नाम से कहते हैं
iṣṭārtha-siddhi-paryantā cintā — the anxious thought that lasts right up until the desired goal is won; dhīḥ iti kathyate — is what is called dhī.
Take an anxious, working-it-over thought — cintā. When that concern holds on and keeps working all the way until the goal one wants is actually reached, it is called dhī, 'resolve'. The one mark that makes it dhī and not mere worry is that it stays fixed on the goal until success comes.
cintā by itself is ordinary anxious brooding (one of the passing bhāvas); dhī is that same brooding raised to a steady quality of the nāyaka by one added feature — it runs 'iṣṭārtha-siddhi-paryantam', up to the very winning of the goal. So the definition is cintā-plus-persistence: a blue lotus is still a lotus, only marked blue; dhī is still cintā, only marked by its holding out to the end. This kārikā defines dhī in the run of the hero's qualities, just after ojas (7.14).
iṣṭārtha-siddhi-paryantā cintā dhīḥ iti kathyate
The anxious, sustained thinking-over that holds on right up until the goal one wants is actually won — that is what is called dhī, steady resolve.
Lakṣaṇa (definition) kārikā: it defines dhī, a quality of the nāyaka, as cintā that persists until the desired end is attained — placed just after ojas (7.14) in the run of the hero's qualities.
