This kārikā defines gotra-skhalita, literally 'the slip of the name'. It is when someone speaks one name in place of the right one — nāma-vyatyaya, the name interchanged. Rūpa glosses the skhalita ('slip') of gotra ('name') simply as this: uttering a name swapped for another. That mistaken naming is what he calls gotra-skhalita.

gotra ordinarily means 'clan, family name'; in this dramaturgical term it stands for the personal name, and skhalita is a slip or stumble of the tongue. gotra-skhalita is the received name for a lover's slip in which the wrong name is spoken in place of the beloved's — the definition here fixes only that it is nāma-vyatyaya-bhāṣaṇa, the uttering of an interchanged name.
