This defines the next of the twenty-one sandhy-antaras: pratyutpanna-mati, 'presence of mind'. It is a pratibhā — a sudden flash of wit — but of one particular kind. Not wit in general, but the kind that fires off then and there, right at the moment the situation demands it. Quick thinking that arrives on time, unrehearsed, is what Rūpa means by pratyutpanna-mati.

pratyutpanna-mati is one of the twenty-one sandhy-antaras that this seventh vibhāga names and defines (see 7.1-2). Its distinguishing mark is the timing: not cleverness at large but pratibhā that is tāt-kālika — sparked at that very instant, quick-thinking that meets a sudden turn on stage. The lead-in remark 'atra śaṅkha-cūḍa-tarjanaṁ daṇḍaḥ' closes off the previous device, daṇḍa (with the threatening of Śaṅkha-cūḍa as its example), just before this kārikā opens the new one. pratibhā is itself a term of Sanskrit poetics — the intuitive, spontaneous genius of a poet or speaker — narrowed here to on-the-spot readiness of mind.
