tunow, as for — turning from the last topic to this new oneपरन्तु (पूर्व अंग से भेद दिखाकर अब नए अंग का लक्षण आरम्भ)
jīvita-droha-kriyāis the act of striking at [someone's] life predicate; jīvita 'life' + droha 'assault, doing harm' + kriyā 'act'जीवन पर द्रोह (आक्रमण) करने की क्रिया — यही उसका लक्षण है
syātis said to be optative doing the defining work — 'X is (defined as) Y'हो — यह विधिलिङ् 'अमुक अंग अमुक है' ऐसा लक्षण-कार्य कर रहा है
ātatāyinaḥof an ātatāyin — an aggressor, an assailant who has it coming genitive: it is his life the violence is done againstआततायी का — जीवन पर यह आक्रमण उसी के प्रति किया जाता है
vadhaḥ tu — now, as for vadha; ātatāyinaḥ jīvita-droha-kriyā — the act of striking at the life of an aggressor (ātatāyin); syāt — is said to be.
Now the element called vadha. Vadha is the act of striking at the life of an ātatāyin — an aggressor. So 'vadha' on the stage is not killing in general; it is violence aimed at an assailant, one who has brought it on himself. Defined here, it is shown in the verse that follows.
vadha is a technical element of dramatic construction (a nāṭya element), defined here and then illustrated in the next verse (ref 134q1). ātatāyin is a term carried over from Dharmaśāstra: an 'aggressor', traditionally reckoned as one of six — an arsonist, a poisoner, one who comes with a weapon raised, a stealer of wealth, of land, or of one's wife — whom one may lawfully strike down. By pinning vadha to the ātatāyin, the definition restricts it to violence dealt out to a deserving assailant, not to killing at large.
ātatāyinaḥ jīvita-droha-kriyā tu vadhaḥ syāt.
vadhaḥ tu ātatāyinaḥ jīvita-droha-kriyā syāt
As for vadha: it is the act of striking at the life of an ātatāyin — an aggressor who has brought it on himself; this alone, on the stage, is what counts as 'slaying'.
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā of the vadha subsection: it defines the dramatic element vadha ('slaying, violence') by restricting it to violence dealt against an ātatāyin (a deserving aggressor), setting up the illustration that follows.
