L1definition
daṇḍas tv avinayādīnāṁ dṛṣṭyā śrutyā ca tarjanam ||
daṇḍaḥdaṇḍa — the term now being defined, the sandhy-aṅga named 'the rod'दण्ड नामक सन्ध्यंग
tunow, in turn — moving on to the next limb after bheda tu here just steps the list forward, not a real 'but'और अब (यहाँ 'तु' केवल गणना को आगे बढ़ाता है, सचमुच का 'परन्तु' नहीं)
avinaya-ādīnāmaimed at misconduct and the like — insolence, bad behaviour, and so on objective genitive: the thing rebuked, not a possessorअविनय आदि दोषों का — अर्थात् जिसकी भर्त्सना की जाती है (यहाँ षष्ठी उस वस्तु को बताती है जिसे झिड़का जाता है, स्वामी को नहीं)
dṛṣṭyāby a stern look instrumental of meansकोपभरी दृष्टि के द्वारा
śrutyāand by a spoken rebuke — by what is said out loud instrumental of means; śruti = 'what is heard' → the spoken wordतीखे वचन के द्वारा (श्रुति अर्थात् 'जो सुना जाता है' — बोला हुआ शब्द)
caand — pairing the two means, the glance together with the wordऔर
tarjanamis the threatening, the chiding — this is what daṇḍa isधमकाना, भर्त्सना करना
daṇḍaḥ tu — now daṇḍa; avinaya-ādīnām — of misconduct and the like; dṛṣṭyā — by a stern look; śrutyā ca — and by a spoken rebuke; tarjanam — is the threatening.
Now the limb called daṇḍa. daṇḍa is a rebuke aimed at misconduct and the like. It is delivered two ways — by a hard, threatening look, and by a spoken chiding — and 'ca' pairs the two. So daṇḍa is simply the threatening or scolding of a wrongdoer, whether by glance or by word, or both together.
daṇḍa in ordinary usage means a rod, staff, or punishment; here it is a technical sandhy-aṅga (a limb of the dramatic junctures) — the moment a character checks another's misconduct with a threatening look or a sharp word.
avinaya-ādīnām dṛṣṭyā śrutyā ca tarjanam tu daṇḍaḥ
Daṇḍa, in turn, is the threatening rebuke of misconduct and the like — a checking delivered both by a stern, hard look and by a sharp spoken word.
The lakṣaṇa of daṇḍa, the sandhy-aṅga 'the rod', among the limbs of the dramatic junctures: a rebuke of a wrongdoer by glance, by word, or both.
