Now bheda. The name and the work say the same thing: bheda is bheda-kalpanā, the contriving of a split. The means is kapaṭa-ālāpa — deceitful talk, false words. The target is suhṛdaḥ, friends or allies. So onstage bheda is the moment a character uses tricky speech to drive a wedge between two who are close, breaking their bond and so turning the plot.

bheda is one of the twenty-one sandhy-antaras (the extra junction-limbs listed in 7.2-3), coming next after dāna (7.6). Notice the name echoes the definition: the limb is bheda ('division') and its work is bheda-kalpanā ('the contriving of division'). In statecraft bheda is the third of the four upāyas (sāma, dāna, bheda, daṇḍa); here it is narrowed to the dramaturgical limb — false words that split two friends. The Prakrit passage quoted in the lead-in (Mādhavī and Candrāvalī over the strung garland) illustrates the limb in action.
