Here is the definition of upasaṁhāra, the closing limb of the play's final juncture. It is kṛtārthatā — the moment the goal is reached and the aim stands fully accomplished. Its mark is plain: everything the characters longed for has now been won. When you see every desire fulfilled at the end, that summing-up is the upasaṁhāra.
upasaṁhāra ('summing-up, conclusion') is a sandhy-aṅga — one of the named limbs of a dramatic juncture, here of the nirvahaṇa-sandhi, the play's final knot. It marks the point where the mukhya-kārya, the main goal, stands fully attained. Though set as a kārikā in NC, it is quoted from the general dramaturgy tradition (origin: quoted): the lead-in's example (Kṛṣṇa's going himself in Act 3) served the preceding limb, and this line adds upasaṁhāra to the same run of sandhy-aṅgas. The word upalakṣita flags a recognition-mark (upalakṣaṇa): the winning of all one desired is the sign by which you spot the aṅga — a token that points it out, the way 'the house with the crow on it' points out a house, not a trait that constitutes its essence.
sarva-abhīṣṭa-upalakṣitaḥ upasaṁhāraḥ kṛtārthatā [iti]
The closing limb called upasaṁhāra is kṛtārthatā — the reaching of the goal, the state in which the aim now stands fully accomplished; and you recognize it by this one sign, that everything the characters had longed for has now been won.
Defines the sandhy-aṅga upasaṁhāra, the summing-up limb of the play's final (nirvahaṇa) juncture: it is the attainment of the main goal, marked by the winning of all that was desired.
