carcāṁ siñcati śoṣayaty api mitho vispardhate vāsakṛt
carcāṁthe cooling sandal-paste smeared on the body accusative object — the one thing both eyes and chest work onअंगराग को — शरीर पर लगे चन्दनादि लेप को (कर्म; इसी एक वस्तु पर नेत्र और वक्ष दोनों काम करते हैं)
siñcati[the tear-filled eyes] keep wetting it(एक) सींचता है, गीला कर देता है
śoṣayaty apiand [the sigh-hot chest] dry it right up again api 'and even' — the opposite act laid beside the firstऔर (दूसरा) सुखा भी देता है — 'अपि' से विपरीत क्रिया पहले के साथ रखी जाती है
mitho vispardhateso the two keep vying against each otherदोनों आपस में स्पर्धा करते हैं, होड़ लगाते हैं
vāsakṛtover and over, not just once vā + asakṛt ('or rather, not-once') — read as 'again and again'वा-असकृत्, अर्थात् 'अथवा एक बार नहीं' — इसलिए बार-बार, पुनः-पुनः
carcām — the sandal-paste; siñcati — [the eyes] wet it; śoṣayati api — and [the chest] dries it up again; mithaḥ vispardhate — the two vie with each other; vā asakṛt — over and over.
Picture the cooling sandal-paste smeared on the body for relief. One thing keeps wetting it, another keeps drying it out, and the two never stop competing — again and again. Who the two are comes in the next line: the weeping eyes wet the paste with tears, and the burning chest dries it with the heat of longing. The paste can never settle.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of the first of the two senses of prasaṅga defined in the previous kārikā (nc.6.84, ref 98): prastutārthasya śamanam, 'the calming of the matter at hand.' The lead-in's tatrādyam ('the first of these') points to that first definition. Here the whole torment of separation — the eyes, the chest, the sleepless longing — is the prastuta, the matter under way; it is stilled at the close by Rādhikā's unexpected arrival in his lap (L4). Spoken by the lover — Kṛṣṇa, longing for Rādhā — and quoted from the eighth act (8.3) of the same play quoted throughout this section.

netra-dvandvam uraś ca yad-virahato bāṣpāyamāṇaṁ mama |
netra-dvandvammy pair of eyes nominative — the first of the two rivals of L1 (the one that wets the paste)मेरे दोनों नेत्र (कर्ता — L1 के दो प्रतिद्वन्द्वियों में पहला, जो लेप को गीला करता है)
uraś caand my chest the second rival (the one that dries it)और वक्षःस्थल (दूसरा प्रतिद्वन्द्वी, जो लेप को सुखा देता है)
yad-virahatobecause of separation from her ablative of cause; yat- = Rādhā — the whole state flows from her absenceजिसके — अर्थात् राधा के — विरह के कारण (पंचमी; यह सारी दशा उसी की अनुपस्थिति से बहती है)
bāṣpāyamāṇaṁare welling over — the eyes with tears, the chest with the steam of its own heat denominative participle from bāṣpa, which means both 'tear' and 'hot vapor' — one word covering both rivals at onceबाष्प से भरता हुआ — 'बाष्प' शब्द आँसू और गरम भाप दोनों का वाचक है, एक ही शब्द दोनों प्रतिद्वन्द्वियों पर घटता है
mamathese are mineमेरे
mama — my; netra-dvandvam — pair of eyes; uraḥ ca — and chest; yad-virahataḥ — because of separation from her; bāṣpāyamāṇam — are welling over.
Now the two rivals are named: my two eyes and my chest. Both are welling over because she is gone. The single word bāṣpāyamāṇam carries the whole trick: bāṣpa means both 'tear' and 'hot vapor,' so the eyes brim with tears and the chest gives off the steam of its burning — and that is why one wets the sandal-paste while the other dries it.
The verse turns on the double sense of bāṣpa: 'tear' for the eyes, 'hot vapor / steam' for the sigh-scorched chest. One denominative verb, bāṣpāyamāṇam, is made to fit both, which is what lets the eyes moisten the paste and the chest parch it in the same breath.

preyasīmy dearest beloved nominative — the subject carried over into the next lineप्रेयसी (कर्ता — जो अगली पंक्ति में भी चलती है)
hanta — alas!; svapna-śate api — even in a hundred dreams; durlabhatara-prekṣya-utsavā preyasī — my beloved, even a glimpse of whom is a festival harder than ever to win.
Then comes the cry: 'Alas!' Even in a hundred dreams he cannot catch sight of her. Just to see her would be a festival — and that festival has grown more unreachable than ever. This is my dearest beloved, he says, naming her at last, and the sentence runs straight on into the next line.
prekṣā-utsava, 'the festival of being seen': merely beholding her is spoken of as a holiday of the heart — the measure of how starved of her he is.

And then the turn: out of nowhere, past all expectation, she has come into my very lap. How is she now — that Rādhikā, come all unlooked-for into my embrace? After the burning eyes and chest, after the beloved a hundred dreams could not reach, the whole torment is suddenly stilled by her arrival. That settling of the matter that has run all through the verse is exactly prasaṅga in its first sense — prastutārthasya śamanam, 'the calming of the matter at hand.'

Because I am parted from her, my two eyes and my chest are both welling over — the eyes brimming with tears, the chest steaming with the heat of its own sighs — so that the one keeps wetting the cooling sandal-paste smeared on my body while the other dries it right up, the two rivals vying against each other again and again. Alas — she whom I cannot glimpse even in a hundred dreams, my dearest beloved, the mere sight of whom is a festival now harder than ever to win: that very Rādhikā has come, all unlooked-for, into my very lap. How now does she fare?

An udāharaṇa (move: example) for the first sense of prasaṅga defined in the previous kārikā (nc.6.84), prastutārthasya śamanam, 'the calming of the matter at hand': the whole torment of viraha — eyes, chest, sleepless longing — is the matter under way, stilled at the close by Rādhikā's unexpected arrival; spoken by Kṛṣṇa and quoted from the eighth act (8.3) of the play cited throughout this section.
