bhāva-jñānaṁ kramo yad vā cintyamānārtha-saṅgatiḥ ||
bhāva-jñānaṁis the discerning of [another's] hidden inner feeling or intention nominative predicate; tatpuruṣa bhāva-jñāna, 'the knowing of the bhāva' — reading what someone truly feelsकिसी के हृदय के भाव को जान लेना — अर्थात् दूसरा वस्तुतः क्या अनुभव कर रहा है, इसे पहचान लेना (यही क्रम का एक लक्षण है)
kramaḥkrama — the sandhy-aṅga now being defined nominative subject; visarga becomes -o before the following yadक्रम नामक सन्ध्यङ्ग (यही कर्ता है, जिसका लक्षण कहा जा रहा है)
yad vāor else — a second definition, offered and left standing beside the first yad vā opens a suspended alternative lakṣaṇa, held alongside bhāva-jñāna, not chosen over itअथवा — यहाँ एक दूसरा लक्षण खोला जाता है, जो पहले के साथ-साथ रखा गया है, उसके स्थान पर चुना नहीं गया
cintyamānārtha-saṅgatiḥis the hitting-upon of the very thing one had been pondering nominative predicate; cintyamāna (present passive participle) 'being thought about' + artha 'aim, object' + saṅgati 'coming-together, meeting'जिस अभीष्ट अर्थ (वस्तु) का चिन्तन किया जा रहा था, उसका मिल जाना — चिन्त्यमान अर्थ की सङ्गति
kramaḥ — krama; bhāva-jñānaṁ — is the discerning of [another's] inner feeling; yad vā — or else; cintyamānārtha-saṅgatiḥ — [is] the arriving at the very object one had been pondering.
This line defines krama, and gives it two marks, both left to stand. First: krama is bhāva-jñāna — discerning someone's hidden inner feeling or intention. When a character reads what another truly feels, that is krama. Or else, on a second reading: krama is cintyamānārtha-saṅgati — coming upon the very thing one had been turning over in the mind. When the object of one's thoughts is suddenly met with, that too is krama. Rūpa sets both definitions side by side and chooses neither.
krama is a sandhy-aṅga — a named limb of a dramatic juncture — whose lakṣaṇa (defining mark) this kārikā gives; the subsection heading kramaḥ names the term. The two readings are not idle: the treatise's own lead-in to the illustration (at nc.6.64) applies each in turn — Navavṛndā's discerning of Rādhā's inner state answers to bhāva-jñāna, while Rādhā's catching sight of the sign of Hari (hari-cihna) that she had been thinking of answers to cintyamānārtha-saṅgati.
bhāva-jñānaṁ kramaḥ, yad vā cintyamānārtha-saṅgatiḥ [kramaḥ]
Krama is the discerning of another's hidden inner feeling; or else, on a second reading, krama is the coming-upon of the very thing one had been turning over in the mind.
