rūpamrūpa — the garbha-sandhi limb now being definedरूप (नामक अंग) यह है —
vākyamis a speech, a statementएक वाक्य (कथन), जो
vitarkavatthat carries vitarka — one that weighs things back and forth, reasons a matter out -vat = 'marked by, having'; the differentia: a vākya possessing vitarka (deliberation, conjecture)वितर्क से युक्त हो — अर्थात् जिसमें ऊहापोह, तर्क-वितर्क अथवा सम्भावना का विचार भरा हो
rūpam — rūpa; vitarkavat vākyam [asti] — is a statement marked by deliberation.
This line defines rūpa, another of the limbs (aṅgas) of the garbha-sandhi, the 'germ' juncture of a play. It follows mārga, just defined. The definition is short: rūpa is a speech that carries vitarka. vitarka is a weighing back and forth — deliberating, conjecturing, reasoning a matter out. So when a character's line argues a point through, turns a question over, or reasons among possibilities, that speech is the limb called rūpa. (The '…' at the head marks text carried over from the preceding kārikā, which paired rūpa with mārga.)
rūpa — a technical term of Sanskrit dramaturgy (nāṭya-śāstra): one of the limbs of the garbha-sandhi, coming right after mārga (defined in the lead-in as tattvārtha-kathana, 'telling the true meaning'). vitarka here means deliberation or conjecture — a speech that reasons or debates a matter, weighing it from more than one side. The standard treatises define it the same way: a statement joined with reasoning.
vitarkavat vākyam rūpam [iti nāma garbha-sandhy-aṅgam]
The garbha-sandhi limb called rūpa is a speech charged with vitarka — a statement in which a matter is weighed back and forth, reasoned out, or turned over as a conjecture.
Rūpa's defining kārikā: it defines rūpa, a limb (aṅga) of the garbha-sandhi coming just after mārga, as a vākya marked by vitarka (deliberation).
