yat tu vacanaṁ sotkarṣaṁ [asti] — the speech which carries self-exaltation; tad — that; udāharaṇaṁ matam — is held to be udāharaṇa.
Now the definition of udāharaṇa. A speech that carries a note of self-exaltation — words pitched with pride, or with a sense of one's own eminence and triumph — is what the dramaturgists reckon as udāharaṇa. It is one of the technical limbs (aṅga) of a dramatic juncture (sandhi). Notice how the phrasing works: 'the speech which is sotkarṣa — that is called udāharaṇa.' The next unit will give the illustration that shows this limb in action.
udāharaṇa here is a technical nāṭya term — a named limb of a sandhi, defined as a boastful or self-exalting utterance — not the ordinary sense 'example.' This line is the standard lakṣaṇa of that limb, quoted from the dramaturgical tradition (cf. the parallel 'utkarṣavad vaco yat tu tad udāharaṇaṁ viduḥ').
yat tu vacanaṁ sotkarṣaṁ [bhavati], tad udāharaṇaṁ matam.
yat tu sotkarṣaṁ vacanaṁ (भवति), tad udāharaṇaṁ (nāma aṅgaṁ) matam।
But that speech which carries a note of self-exaltation — words pitched with pride, with a sense of one's own eminence and triumph — is what the dramaturgists reckon to be udāharaṇa.
The lakṣaṇa of udāharaṇa, one of the technical limbs (aṅga) of a dramatic juncture (sandhi), defined as a self-exalting utterance; the lead-in supplies its illustration — Kṛṣṇa marvelling that Candrāvalī's anklet-music seizes him as though heard before.
