karaṇa is one of the aṅgas (limbs) of the mukha-sandhi, the opening juncture of a play, and this line is its received lakṣaṇa (definition). It follows on the aṅgas just treated (udbheda, bheda): once the seed of the plot has been broken open and disclosed, karaṇa is the act of putting that disclosed matter into motion.
