L1definition
vastunas tu samastasya sādhyaṁ kāryam iti smṛtam |
vastunas tunow, turning to the plot (vastu) — the story-matter the play dramatizes tu marks the shift to the next item in the running list of plot-elements (arthaprakṛti)परन्तु सम्पूर्ण वस्तु (कथावस्तु) का — 'तु' शब्द अर्थप्रकृतियों की चलती हुई गणना में अगले अंग की ओर मोड़ देता है
samastasyataken as a whole, in its entirety genitive agreeing with vastunaḥ — 'of the entire plot'समस्त का, अर्थात् पूरी कथावस्तु का — यह षष्ठी 'वस्तुनः' के साथ अन्वित होती है
sādhyamthe aim that is to be accomplished, the goal the whole action works towardजो साध्य है, अर्थात् जिसे सिद्ध करना है वह लक्ष्य
kāryamis the kārya — the final Result, the consummationवही कार्य कहलाता है — वह फल जिसके लिए सारी कथावस्तु रची जाती है
iti smṛtamso the authorities teach smṛtam — 'is handed down / remembered' in the dramaturgical traditionऐसा (नाट्य-परम्परा में) स्मृत है, अर्थात् माना गया है
vastunaḥ samastasya — of the entire plot; sādhyam — the goal to be accomplished; kāryam iti smṛtam — is taught as the kārya.
Now we come to the plot as a whole. The goal that the whole story is working to reach — its final aim — is what the tradition calls the kārya, the Result. It is the consummation the entire action drives toward.
kārya is the last and culminating of the five plot-elements (arthaprakṛti), following bīja, bindu, patākā, and prakarī (the two just defined in v005–v006). Where the others are means, the kārya is the end they all serve — the fruit the plot is built to attain.
L2example
rādhā-mādhavayoḥ saṅgo yathā lalita-mādhave ||
rādhā-mādhavayoḥof Rādhā and Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa), the two of them together genitive dualराधा और माधव — इन दोनों का (षष्ठी द्विवचन)
saṅgaḥtheir union, their coming-togetherसंग, अर्थात् मिलन
yathā lalita-mādhaveas it stands in the Lalita-Mādhava (Rūpa's own play)जैसा कि ललित-माधव नाटक में (दिखाया गया है)
rādhā-mādhavayoḥ saṅgaḥ — the union of Rādhā and Mādhava; yathā lalita-mādhave — as [seen] in the Lalita-Mādhava.
For the example, take the Lalita-Mādhava. There the union of Rādhā and Mādhava is the kārya — the final result the whole play is built to reach. Every earlier turn of the plot exists to bring it about.
The illustration of kārya, the culminating Result just defined: in the Lalita-Mādhava the entire plot is directed toward the union of Rādhā and Mādhava, so that union is its kārya. Mādhava is a name of Kṛṣṇa, echoing the play's own title.
samastasya vastunaḥ tu yat sādhyaṁ, tat kāryam iti smṛtam; yathā lalita-mādhave rādhā-mādhavayoḥ saṅgaḥ.
samastasya vastunaḥ tu yat sādhyaṁ (लक्ष्यं), tat kāryam iti smṛtam; yathā lalita-mādhave rādhā-mādhavayoḥ saṅgaḥ (kāryasya udāharaṇam)।
The goal that the whole plot works to accomplish — this the tradition hands down as the kārya, the final Result; as, for instance, the union of Rādhā and Mādhava in the Lalita-Mādhava.
Defines kārya, the fifth and culminating arthaprakṛti (the Result the whole plot drives toward), and illustrates it with the union of Rādhā and Mādhava in Rūpa's own Lalita-Mādhava.
