sūtradhāro naṭīṁ brūte svakāryaṁ prati yuktitaḥ |
sūtradhāraḥthe sūtradhāra — the stage-director who opens the playसूत्रधार (नाट्य का संचालक, जो प्रस्तावना कहता है)
naṭīmto the naṭī, the actress acc.; she is the one he addresses — the partner in the opening dialogueनटी से (जिससे वह प्रारम्भिक संवाद में बात करता है)
brūtespeaksकहता है
svakāryaṁ pratiwith reference to his own business prati + acc. 'with regard to'; sva-kārya is the director's own affair — ostensibly he talks about his own stage-work, and that talk quietly carries the play's subject inअपने कार्य के विषय में (ऊपर से रंगमंच का अपना काम, जिसमें नाटक का विषय छिपकर आ जाता है)
yuktitaḥby an apt device, fittingly adverbial -taḥ from yukti, 'a fitting contrivance'; the speech is not idle chatter but purposefully arrangedयुक्तिपूर्वक (सोच-समझकर रचे हुए ढंग से, व्यर्थ की बात नहीं)
sūtradhāraḥ yuktitaḥ svakāryaṁ prati naṭīṁ brūte — the sūtradhāra, by an apt device, with reference to his own business, speaks to the actress.
Rūpa is defining the āmukha, the play's opening. Picture the stage-director, the sūtradhāra, speaking to the naṭī, the actress. On the surface he is talking about his own business — the work of getting the performance going. But the talk is arranged with a purpose, by an apt device; it is not idle. The second line tells us what that device does.
The sūtradhāra is the 'holder of the thread,' the director who runs the performance and speaks the prologue; the naṭī is the actress who partners him in the opening exchange. Their apparently casual chat about backstage matters is the frame within which the play is introduced.

prastutākṣepi citroktyā yat tad āmukham īritam ||
prastutākṣepihinting at the matter about to be presented nom. sg. neut., agreeing with yat/tat/āmukham; prastuta = the subject at hand, the play to come, ākṣepin = drawing it in, alluding to it — the opening talk slips the coming drama into viewप्रस्तुत विषय (आने वाले नाटक) को भीतर खींच लाने वाला — बातचीत में ही आगामी नाटक की झलक आ जाती है

yat prastutākṣepi citroktyā [bhavati], tat āmukham īritam — that [opening exchange] which, by an artful turn of speech, hints at the matter about to be presented — that is declared to be the āmukha.
Now the point of the device. Through an artful, striking turn of speech, that opening exchange hints at the matter about to be presented — it lets the coming play show through the director's chatter. When the sūtradhāra's talk with the actress does this, that whole opening is what we call the āmukha.
āmukha (also called prastāvanā or sthāpanā) is the prologue of a Sanskrit play — the framing dialogue before the drama proper begins, in which the director introduces the theme. prastuta-ākṣepin, 'alluding to the matter at hand,' is what makes it a prologue rather than mere preamble: the clever line does double duty, sounding like backstage talk while quietly announcing the play to come.
sūtradhāraḥ yuktitaḥ svakāryaṁ prati naṭīṁ brūte, yat prastutākṣepi citroktyā [bhavati], tat āmukham īritam.
sūtradhāraḥ svakāryaṁ prati yuktitaḥ naṭīm brūte, (evaṁ ca) citroktyā prastutākṣepi yat (vacanam) tat āmukham īritam।
When the sūtradhāra, the stage-director, purposefully — by an apt device — speaks to the naṭī, the actress, with reference to his own backstage business, and that opening exchange, through an artful, striking turn of speech, quietly draws in the drama about to be presented: that whole opening is what is declared to be the āmukha, the prologue.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the āmukha (prologue): the sūtradhāra–naṭī opening dialogue whose clever speech alludes to the coming play.
