itivṛttaṁ — the plot; tridhā bhavet — is threefold; khyātaṁ kḷptaṁ miśram iti — namely khyāta, kḷpta, and miśra.
Now the itivṛtta — the plot, the story-matter a play is built on. It comes in three kinds. Khyāta, the celebrated story everyone already knows. Kḷpta, the one the poet makes up himself. And miśra, a blend of the two. The next lines define each in turn.
itivṛtta ("as-it-happened") is the standard dramaturgical term for the plot or fable. This defining verse is quoted into the Nāṭaka-candrikā from the received nāṭya-śāstra tradition (the three-fold prakhyāta/utpādya/miśra division of the plot is the common inheritance of Bharata's followers); Rūpa adduces it to fix what itivṛtta means before treating its parts.

khyātaṁ — the khyāta plot; śāstra-prasiddhaṁ syāt — is what is well-known in the śāstras; kḷptaṁ — the kḷpta plot; kavi-vinirmitam — is fashioned by the poet.
Take the two simple kinds first. The khyāta plot is the story already famous in the authoritative texts — one the audience half-knows before the curtain. The kḷpta plot is the poet's own making, built up by him from nothing.

Now the third kind. When the celebrated and the invented are interwoven, that blend is the miśra plot. But there is a caution for the nāṭaka in particular: whatever the poet invents in it should be made charming and delightful — the made-up part must please, not merely fill space.
itivṛttaṁ khyātaṁ kḷptaṁ miśram iti tridhā bhavet; [tatra] śāstra-prasiddhaṁ khyātaṁ syāt, kavi-vinirmitaṁ kḷptaṁ [syāt], tayoḥ saṅkulatā miśraṁ [bhavet]; nāṭake tu kḷptaṁ ramyaṁ [syāt].
The itivṛtta — the plot on which a play is built — is of three kinds: khyāta, kḷpta, and miśra. The khyāta plot is the one already famous in the authoritative texts; the kḷpta plot is the poet's own invention; and the interweaving of these two is the miśra plot. But in a nāṭaka, whatever the poet invents should be made charming and delightful.
A definition-kārikā, quoted here under 'athetivṛttam—' from the received nāṭya-śāstra tradition, that fixes the itivṛtta (dramatic plot) as threefold — khyāta, kḷpta, miśra — before its parts are treated, adding the counsel that the invented matter of a nāṭaka be made ramya.
