L1definition
nāṭakaṁ khyāta-vṛttaṁ syāt kḷpta-vṛttā tu nāṭikā |
nāṭakaṁthe nāṭaka — the full-length play — is what is now being fixed nominative neuter, the subject the syāt predicatesनाटक (जिसका लक्षण किया जा रहा है)
khyāta-vṛttaṁtakes a khyāta-vṛtta — a plot already well known, drawn from famous traditionजिसका कथावृत्त प्रसिद्ध हो — अर्थात् शास्त्र से लिया हुआ और लोकविख्यात
syātshould be — the rule laid down optative of vidhi, prescribing the typeहोना चाहिए (विधि के रूप में यह भेद बतलाया जाता है)
kḷpta-vṛttātakes a kḷpta-vṛtta — a plot the poet invents feminine, so it agrees with nāṭikā, not the neuter nāṭakaजिसका कथावृत्त कवि का गढ़ा हुआ हो — यह स्त्रीलिंग है, इसलिए नाटिका का विशेषण
tubut — turning from the nāṭaka to the contrasting genreपरन्तु (नाटक से भेद दिखाने के लिए)
nāṭakaṁ — the nāṭaka; khyāta-vṛttaṁ syāt — should take a well-known (khyāta) plot; tu — but; nāṭikā — the nāṭikā; kḷpta-vṛttā — takes an invented (kḷpta) plot.
Rūpa now assigns the three plot-types he had just defined (khyāta, kḷpta, miśra) to the dramatic genres. The nāṭaka — the full-length play — should take a khyāta-vṛtta: a plot that is already famous, drawn from known tradition. But the nāṭikā — a lighter, shorter play — takes a kḷpta-vṛtta: a plot the poet makes up.
This picks up the three itivṛtta (plot) types defined in the previous kārikā (3.2): khyāta (drawn from śāstra and famous), kḷpta (fabricated by the poet), and miśra (a mix). The nāṭikā is a recognized minor genre — a short, light romantic play — and the feminine kḷpta-vṛttā marks that the invented plot belongs to it, not to the neuter nāṭaka.

nāṭyāṅga-bhāṣitamso it has been stated in the Nāṭyāṅga — the authority on the limbs of drama Rūpa is followingनाट्य के अंगों के विषय में जो कहा गया है, उसका कथन — अर्थात् प्रमाणभूत परम्परा
īhāmṛgaḥ — the īhāmṛga; miśra-vṛttaḥ — takes a mixed (miśra) plot; iti — thus; nāṭyāṅga-bhāṣitam — it has been stated in the Nāṭyāṅga.
And the īhāmṛga — another dramatic type — takes a miśra-vṛtta: a mixed plot, part drawn from famous tradition and part invented. Thus, Rūpa notes, these three assignments have been laid down in the Nāṭyāṅga, the treatise on the limbs (aṅga) of drama.
nāṭyāṅga names the received teaching on the aṅgas — the constituent limbs and topics — of nāṭya; Rūpa cites it as the authority for pairing each plot-type with its genre (khyāta→nāṭaka, kḷpta→nāṭikā, miśra→īhāmṛga). The īhāmṛga is a four-act mixed-plot drama in the classical lists of rūpakas.
nāṭakaṁ khyāta-vṛttaṁ syāt; kḷpta-vṛttā tu nāṭikā; īhāmṛgaḥ miśra-vṛttaḥ iti nāṭyāṅga-bhāṣitam.
The nāṭaka — the full-length play — should take a khyāta-vṛtta, a plot already famous and drawn from known tradition; but the nāṭikā, a lighter short play, takes a kḷpta-vṛtta, a plot the poet invents; and the īhāmṛga takes a miśra-vṛtta, a mixed plot part-famous and part-invented — thus, Rūpa notes, it has been laid down in the Nāṭyāṅga, the treatise on the limbs of drama.
