Vṛtti Patañjali
ṛkāraḷkārayoḥ savarṇavidhiḥ .
The prescription (vidhi) of the savarṇa-relation for the ṛ-sound and the ḷ-sound [must be stated].
ṛkāraḷkārayoḥ savarṇasañjñā vidheyā .
The savarṇa designation (saṁjñā) of the ṛ-sound and the ḷ-sound is to be enjoined (vidheyā).
hotṛ , ḷkāraḥ , hotṝḷkāraḥ .
[Example:] hotṛ, ḷkāraḥ, hotṝḷkāraḥ.
kim prayojanam .
What is the purpose (prayojana)?
akaḥ savarṇe dīrghaḥ iti dīrghatvam yathā syāt .
So that lengthening (dīrgha) may take place by [the rule] 'akaḥ savarṇe dīrghaḥ' (an ak-vowel becomes long before a savarṇa).
na etat asti prayojanam .
This is not the purpose.
vakṣyati etat .
He will state this [elsewhere].
savarṇadīrghatve ṛti , rṛvāvacanam ḷti , lḷvāvacanam iti .
namely: 'in savarṇa-lengthening, before an ṛ the mention of rṛ (optionally); before an ḷ the mention of lḷ' — thus.
tat savarṇe yathā syāt .
so that it may take place before a savarṇa.
iha mā bhūt : dadhi , ḷkāraḥ , madhu , ḷkāraḥ iti .
so that it may not [apply] here: 'dadhi, ḷkāraḥ; madhu, ḷkāraḥ' — thus.
yat etat savarṇadīrghatve ṛti iti etat ṛtaḥ iti vakṣyāmi .
That which [was put as] 'in savarṇa-lengthening, before an ṛ' — this I shall state as 'ṛtaḥ (in place of an ṛ)'.
tataḥ ḷti .
then, 'before an ḷ'.
ḷti ca vā lḷ bhavati .
and before an ḷ, optionally lḷ occurs.
ṛtaḥ iti eva .
'ṛtaḥ' — just [that recurs, by anuvṛtti].
tat na vaktavyam bhavati .
That does not have to be stated.
avaśyam tat vaktavyam .
That must necessarily be stated.
ūkālaḥ ac hrasvardīrghaplutasañjñaḥ bhavati iti ucyate .
It is stated: 'a vowel (ac) measured by the duration of ū is designated short (hrasva), long (dīrgha), or protracted (pluta)'.
na ca rṛkāraḥ lḷkāraḥ vā ac asti .
and neither the rṛ-sound nor the lḷ-sound is a vowel (ac).
rṛkārasya , lḷkārasya ca actvam vakṣyāmi .
I shall state the vowel-hood (actva) of the rṛ-sound and the lḷ-sound.
tat ca avaśyam vaktavyam plutaḥ yathā syāt : hotṛ , ṛkāraḥ hotṝkāraḥ , hotṛ3kāraḥ , hotṛ , ḷkāraḥ , hotḷkāraḥ , hotḷ3kāraḥ .
and that must necessarily be stated, so that the protracted vowel (pluta) may occur: hotṛ, ṛkāraḥ → hotṝkāraḥ, hotṛ3kāraḥ; hotṛ, ḷkāraḥ → hotḷkāraḥ, hotḷ3kāraḥ.
kim punaḥ atra jyāyaḥ .
But which here is preferable (jyāyas)?
savarṇasañjñāvacanam eva jyāyaḥ .
The statement of the savarṇa designation is itself preferable.
dīrghatvam ca eva hi siddham bhavati. api ca ṛkāragrahaṇe ḷkāragrahaṇam sannihitam bhavati .
For lengthening too is thereby established (siddha); and moreover, when the ṛ-sound is taken up (grahaṇa), the taking-up of the ḷ-sound is close at hand.
yathā iha bhavati : ṛti akaḥ: khaṭva ṛśyaḥ , māla ṛśyaḥ idam api saṅgṛhītam bahavati : khaṭva , ḷkāraḥ, māla , ḷkāraḥ iti .
As it holds here: by 'ṛti akaḥ' — 'khaṭva ṛśyaḥ, māla ṛśyaḥ' — this too becomes included: 'khaṭva, ḷkāraḥ; māla, ḷkāraḥ' — thus.
vā supi āpiśaleḥ : uparkārīyati , upārkārīyati , idam api siddham bhavati : upalkārīyati, upālkārīyati iti .
By the 'vā supi' of Āpiśali: 'uparkārīyati, upārkārīyati'; this too is established: 'upalkārīyati, upālkārīyati' — thus.
yadi tarhi ṛkāragrahaṇe ḷkāragrahaṇam sannihitam bhavati uḥ aṇ raparaḥ , ḷkārasya api raparatvam prāpnoti .
If then, when the ṛ-sound is taken up, the taking-up of the ḷ-sound is close at hand, [then] by 'uḥ aṇ raparaḥ' (an aṇ-substitute for ṛ is followed by r), being-followed-by-r (raparatva) would also result for the ḷ-sound.
ḷkārasya laparatvam vakṣyāmi .
I shall state the being-followed-by-l (laparatva) of the ḷ-sound.
tat ca avaśyam vaktavyam asatyām savarṇasañjñāyām vidhyartham .
and that must necessarily be stated — when there is no savarṇa designation — for the sake of the prescription (vidhi).
tat eva satyām rephabādhanārtham bhaviṣyati .
That very [statement], when [the savarṇa designation] does obtain, will serve to set aside the repha (r).
iha tarhi raṣābhyām naḥ ṇaḥ samānapade iti ṛkāragrahaṇam coditam mātṝṇām , pitṝṇām iti evamartham .
Then here, by 'raṣābhyām naḥ ṇaḥ samānapade' (n becomes ṇ after r or ṣ within one word), the mention of the ṛ-sound is prompted, for the sake of [forms] like 'mātṝṇām, pitṝṇām'.
tat iha api prāpnoti : kḷpyamānam paśya iti .
That would apply here too: 'kḷpyamānam paśya' — thus.
atha asatyām api savarṇasañjñāyām iha kasmāt na bhavati : prakḷpyamānam paśya iti .
Now, even when there is no savarṇa designation, why does it not occur here: 'prakḷpyamānam paśya' — thus?
cuṭutulaśarvyavāye na iti vakṣyāmi .
I shall state 'not [when there is] the intervention of cu, ṭu, tu, la, śa (cuṭutulaśa)' — thus.
aparaḥ āha : tribhiḥ ca madhyamaiḥ vargaiḥ laśasaiḥ ca vyavāye na iti vakṣyāmi iti .
Another says: 'I shall state — not when there is intervention by the three middle classes (varga) and by la, śa, sa' — thus.
varṇaikadeśāḥ ca varṇagrahaṇena gṛhyante iti yaḥ asau ḷkāre lakāraḥ tadāśrayaḥ pratiṣedhaḥ bhaviṣyati .
And [since] 'the constituent parts of a phoneme (varṇaikadeśa) are grasped by the mention of the phoneme (varṇagrahaṇa)', that la-sound (lakāra) which is within the ḷ-sound — the prohibition (pratiṣedha) resting on that will operate.
yadi evam na arthaḥ raṣābhyām ṇatve ṛkāragrahaṇena .
If so, there is no need for the mention of the ṛ-sound in the ṇatva [rule] 'raṣābhyām'.
varṇaikadeśāḥ ca varṇagrahaṇena gṛhyante iti yaḥ asau ṛkāre rephaḥ tadāśrayam ṇatvam bhaviṣyati .
[Since] 'the constituent parts of a phoneme are grasped by the mention of the phoneme', that repha (r) which is within the ṛ-sound — the ṇatva resting on that will occur.
