dhātugrahaṇam kimartham .
For what purpose [is] the mention of 'dhātu' (dhātu-grahaṇa)?
iha mā bhūt: lūñ lavitā lavitum pūñ pavitā pavitum .
So that [it] may not [apply] here: lūñ — lavitā, lavitum; pūñ — pavitā, pavitum.
ārdhadhātuke iti kimartham .
For what purpose [is] 'ārdhadhātuke'?
tridhā baddhaḥ vṛṣabhaḥ roravīti .
'The bull, bound threefold, bellows (roravīti).'
kim punaḥ idam ārdhadhātukagrahaṇam lopaviśeṣaṇam : ārdhadhātukanimitte lope sati ye guṇavṛddhī prāpnutaḥ te na bhavataḥ iti , āhosvit guṇavṛddhiviśeṣaṇam ārdhadhātukagrahaṇam : dhātulope sati ārdhadhātukanimitte ye guṇavṛddhī prāpnutaḥ te na bhavataḥ iti .
But now (kim punaḥ), is this mention of ārdhadhātuka a qualifier of the lopa (lopa-viśeṣaṇa) — 'the guṇa and vṛddhi that would apply, when there is a lopa occasioned by an ārdhadhātuka, do not occur' — or rather (āhosvit) is this mention of ārdhadhātuka a qualifier of the guṇa-and-vṛddhi (guṇavṛddhi-viśeṣaṇa) — 'when there is a dhātu-lopa, the guṇa and vṛddhi that would apply as occasioned by an ārdhadhātuka do not occur'?
kim ca ataḥ .
And what [follows] from this (kim ca ataḥ)?
yadi lopaviśeṣaṇam upeddhaḥ preddhaḥ atra api prāpnoti .
If [it is] the qualifier of the lopa, [then] in upeddhaḥ, preddhaḥ too [the prohibition] would apply.
atha guṇavṛddhiviśeṣaṇam knopayati iti atra api prāpnoti .
If (atha) [it is] the qualifier of the guṇa-and-vṛddhi, [then] in 'knopayati' too [it] would apply.
yathā icchasi tathā astu .
Let it be as you wish.
astu lopaviśeṣaṇam .
Let it be the qualifier of the lopa.
katham upeddhaḥ preddhaḥ iti .
How then [are] upeddhaḥ, preddhaḥ [obtained]?
bahiraṅgaḥ guṇaḥ antaraṅgaḥ pratiṣedhaḥ .
The guṇa is bahiraṅga (external); the prohibition (pratiṣedha) is antaraṅga (internal).
asiddham bahiraṅgam antaraṅge .
A bahiraṅga [operation] is asiddha (as though not accomplished) with respect to an antaraṅga [operation].
yadi evam na arthaḥ dhātugrahaṇena .
If so, there is no purpose in the mention of 'dhātu' (dhātu-grahaṇa).
iha kasmāt na bhavati: lūñ lavitā lavitum .
[Then] why does [the prohibition] not apply here: lūñ — lavitā, lavitum?
ārdhadhātukanimitte lope pratiṣedhaḥ na ca eṣaḥ ārdhadhātukanimittaḥ lopaḥ .
The prohibition [holds] when the lopa is occasioned by an ārdhadhātuka; and this is not a lopa occasioned by an ārdhadhātuka.
atha vā punaḥ astu guṇavṛddhiviśeṣaṇam .
Or else (atha vā) again, let it be the qualifier of the guṇa-and-vṛddhi.
nanu ca uktam knopayati iti atra api prāpnoti iti .
But surely (nanu ca) it was said: 'in knopayati too it would apply' — [thus]?
na eṣaḥ doṣaḥ .
This is no fault.
nipātanāt siddham .
It is established by nipātana (irregular formation).
kim nipātanam .
What [is] the nipātana?
cele knopeḥ iti
'cele knopeḥ' — thus.
