Vṛtti Patañjali
pratyekam vṛddhiguṇasañjñe bhavataḥ iti vaktavyam .
It must be stated (vaktavyam): the two terms (saṁjñā) vṛddhi and guṇa apply severally (pratyekam).
kim prayojanam .
What is the purpose (prayojana)?
samudāye mā bhūtām iti .
So that the two may not apply in the aggregate (samudāya) — thus.
anyatra sahavacanāt samudāye sañjñāprasaṅgaḥ .
[Vārttika] Otherwise (anyatra), because ‘saha’ is [separately] pronounced [elsewhere], there is the contingency (prasaṅga) of the saṁjñā [applying] in the aggregate (samudāya).
anyatra sahavacanāt samudāye vṛddhiguṇasañjñayoḥ aprasaṅgaḥ .
Otherwise (anyatra), because ‘saha’ is pronounced [elsewhere], there is non-application (aprasaṅga) of the two saṁjñās, vṛddhi and guṇa, in the aggregate (samudāya).
yatra icchati sahabhūtānām kāryam karoti tatra sahagrahaṇam .
Where one wishes to perform an operation upon things taken jointly (saha-bhūtānām), there is the use of the word ‘saha’ (saha-grahaṇa).
tat yathā .
That is, for instance:
saha supā .
‘saha supā’ (‘together with a sup-form’).
ubhe abhyastam saha iti .
‘The two together (saha) [are termed] abhyasta’ — thus.
pratyavayavam ca vākyaparisamāpteḥ .
[Vārttika] And [the operation applies] to each individual member (pratyavayavam), because the sentence is completed [in each] (vākya-parisamāpteḥ).
pratyavayavam ca vākyaparisamāptiḥ dṛśyate .
And the completion of the sentence (vākya-parisamāpti) is seen with respect to each individual member (pratyavayavam).
tat yathā .
That is, for instance:
devadattayajñadattaviṣṇumitrāḥ bhojyantām iti .
‘Let Devadatta, Yajñadatta, and Viṣṇumitra be fed’ — thus.
na ca ucyate pratyekam iti .
And ‘severally (pratyekam)’ is not stated.
pratyekam ca bhujiḥ parisamāpyate .
And the eating (bhuj) is completed with respect to each one severally (pratyekam).
nanu ca ayam api asti dṛṣṭāntaḥ samudāye vākyaparisamāptiḥ iti .
But surely (nanu ca) there is also this [contrary] example, [namely one] where the completion of the sentence is in the aggregate (samudāya) — thus.
tat yathā .
That is, for instance:
gargāḥ śatam daṇḍyantām iti .
‘Let the Gargas be fined a hundred’ — thus.
arthinaḥ ca rājānaḥ hiraṇyena bhavanti na ca pratyekam daṇḍayanti .
And the kings are desirous of the gold (hiraṇya), and they do not fine [them] severally (pratyekam).
sati etasmin dṛṣṭānte yadi tatra sahagrahaṇam kriyate iha api pratyekam iti vaktavyam .
This example being available, if there (tatra) the word ‘saha’ is employed (saha-grahaṇa), then here too (iha api) ‘severally (pratyekam)’ must be stated.
atha tatra antareṇa sahagrahaṇam sahabhūtānām kāryam bhavati iha api na arthaḥ pratyekam iti vacanena .
Or (atha), if there — without the word ‘saha’ (antareṇa saha-grahaṇam) — an operation upon jointly-taken things (saha-bhūtānām) takes place, then here too (iha api) there is no need (na arthaḥ) for the statement ‘severally (pratyekam)’.
