Vṛtti Patañjali
yat adhītam .
yat adhītam (‘what has been studied’) —
yat adhītam avijñātam nigadena eva śabdyate anagnau iva śuṣkaidhaḥ na tat jvalati karhi cit .
What has been studied but not understood, and is merely sounded out by recitation — like dry fuel where there is no fire, that never blazes at any time.
tasmāt anarthakam mā adhigīṣmahi iti adhyeyam vyākaraṇam. yat adhītam .
‘Therefore may we not recite to no purpose’ — thus (iti) vyākaraṇa is to be studied. yat adhītam.
