Hindi commentary Govind Prasad Sharma · śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī
Among a collection of letters, whichever is the final letter, the letter preceding it receives this upadhā-saṁjñā.
For this sūtra to operate, there is no requirement of a pada, a non-pada, a dhātu, a prātipadika, an āgama, an ādeśa, or the like; rather, in any collection of letters whatsoever, there is only the requirement of the letter preceding whichever is final. For example, in rāma the final letter is the akāra after the makāra, and the letter preceding it is
the makāra; therefore the makāra will receive the upadhā-saṁjñā, but there is no result in assigning the upadhā-saṁjñā to the makāra. Therefore the saṁjñā too is not made. Because 'yā yā saṁjñā sā sā phalavatī' — whatever saṁjñā is made, it has some purpose or other. If, even after making a saṁjñā, no purpose is accomplished, then the very making of the saṁjñā is futile. Therefore in many places in the Mahābhāṣya the statement of the Bhāṣyakāra occurs: prayojanābhāvād it-saṁjñāpi na — 'owing to the absence of purpose, even the it-saṁjñā is not made'. In the same way it should be understood everywhere.
