133. yasmāt pratyayavidhis tadādi pratyaye’ṅgam. Prescription (vidhāna) is vidhi. The vidhi of a pratyaya is pratyayavidhi — a ṣaṣṭhī-tatpuruṣa. That word-form which has that (namely the prakṛti-form) at its beginning is tadādi — a bahuvrīhi. yasmāt ends in the fifth (ablative) case, pratyayavidhiḥ ends in the first (nominative) case, tadādi ends in the first (nominative) case, pratyaye ends in the seventh (locative) case, aṅgam ends in the first (nominative) case; this sūtra has several words.
A word-form which has at its beginning that word from which a given pratyaya is prescribed, when that pratyaya follows, takes the name aṅga (aṅga-saṁjñā).
When the pratyaya that comes from a certain prakṛti follows, then whatever prakṛti is prior, together with any āgama, ādeśa, and the like in the prakṛti, or even if before the pratyaya prescribed from that prakṛti some other vikaraṇa pratyaya such as śap, śānam and the like has occurred, that prakṛti qualified by the vikaraṇa śap and the rest is likewise called aṅga. Hence such an entire prakṛti takes the aṅga-saṁjñā. By the use of the word tadādi, when that pratyaya follows, even if at the time of the pratyaya the prakṛti was something else, and after the pratyaya again some other vikaraṇa pratyayas or āgamas, ādeśas and the like have occurred, then too the prakṛti together with that āgama, ādeśa takes the aṅga-saṁjñā. For example, in the tiṅanta section, when the mip pratyaya comes from the root bhū, then when mip follows, bhū takes the aṅga-saṁjñā; and after śap, the elision of the anubandha, guṇa of bhū, and the av substitution, bhava + mi is formed, and then too, when mi follows, the bhava present in the prior likewise takes the aṅga-saṁjñā. In the science of grammar, when one says aṅga, one should understand the prakṛti that is prior while a pratyaya follows. For example, in rāma + su, the pratyaya su comes from the prakṛti rāma. Hence, while su follows, the word rāma takes the aṅga-saṁjñā.
In rāma su and the like, while the su pratyaya follows, by vyapadeśivadbhāva rāma too is treated as tadādi and takes the aṅga-saṁjñā.
