125. sarūpāṇām ekaśeṣa ekavibhaktau. Those whose form is the same are sarūpa; of them, sarūpāṇām — a bahuvrīhi compound. That which remains is śeṣa; and it is a single remainder, ekaśeṣa — a karmadhāraya compound. And it is a single case-ending, ekavibhakti; in that, ekavibhaktau — a karmadhāraya. sarūpāṇām ends in the sixth (genitive) case, ekaśeṣaḥ ends in the first (nominative) case, ekavibhaktau ends in the seventh (locative) case; this sūtra has three words. When there is a single case-ending, there comes to be a single remainder (ekaśeṣa) of forms that are alike.
In the domain of a single (that is, of any one, and hence of every) case-ending, among all the words that appear exactly alike, only one remains — that is, the elision (lopa) of the remaining words takes place.
In one and the same case-ending, among all the words that are of like form and are uttered in the same form, only one remains and the rest are elided. The one that remains becomes the expresser of the meaning of the elided phonemes as well — yaḥ śiṣyate sa lupyamānārthābhidhāyī.
One whose form is the same is sarūpa; of them, the sarūpas, there is a single remainder (ekaśeṣa). If in one and the same case-ending several words that are exactly alike are uttered, then only one word among them remains and the rest do not remain. For instance, for two Rāmas the word Rāma will be uttered twice; for many Rāmas, Rāma, Rāma, Rāma, Rāma and so on — the many Rāmas — will be uttered. If all these Rāmas and the like are in one and the same case-ending, then only a single Rāma will remain and the rest will be elided. The one that remains will be the expresser of the elided ones too. In this way, from a single Rāma many Rāmas will be understood. This sūtra belongs to the ekaśeṣa section (prakaraṇa). In this section too it is indeed an ekaśeṣa that has taken place.
