५३- चादयोऽसत्त्वे।53. cādayo'sattve.चः आदिर्येषां ते चादयः, बहुव्रीहिः।cādayaḥ means those which have ca at their beginning — a bahuvrīhi compound.न सत्त्वम्- असत्त्वम्, तस्मिन् असत्त्वे।na sattvam is asattva (non-substance); asattve is the locative, ‘in non-substance’.चादयः प्रथमान्तम्, असत्त्वे सप्तम्यन्तं, द्विपदमिदं सूत्रम्।cādayaḥ ends in the nominative (prathamā), asattve ends in the locative (saptamī); this sūtra has two words.प्राग्रीश्वरान्निपाताः से निपाताः का अधिकार चल रहा है।The governing rule (adhikāra) of nipātas is running on from ‘prāg rīśvarān nipātāḥ’.
द्रव्य अर्थ न होने पर च आदि निपातसंज्ञक होते हैं।When the meaning is not a substance (dravya), ca and the rest take the name nipāta (nipāta-saṁjñā).
लिङ्गसङ्ख्यान्वयित्वं द्रव्यत्वम्।liṅga-saṅkhyānvayitvaṁ dravyatvam — the state of being connected with gender and number is substance-hood (dravyatva).जिस शब्द में लिङ्ग और सङ्ख्या का अन्वय अर्थात् सम्बन्ध हो अथवा जिस शब्द में लिङ्ग और सङ्ख्या हो, उसे द्रव्य कहते हैं।That word in which gender (liṅga) and number (saṅkhyā) have connection — that is, relation — or that word which possesses gender and number, is called dravya (substance).उससे भिन्न अद्रव्य हैं।What is other than that is adravya (non-substance).जैसे च, वा, हि, आ, ये अद्रव्य हैं और पशु, मनुष्य, पुस्तक, घर आदि द्रव्य हैं।For example, ca, vā, hi, ā — these are adravya, while animal, man, book, house, and the like are dravya.यह सूत्र चादिगण पठित शब्दों की निपातसंज्ञा करता है, यदि उनमें द्रव्यवाचकता न हो तो।This sūtra assigns the nipāta-saṁjñā to the words recited in the cādi-gaṇa, provided they do not denote a substance (dravya).निपातसंज्ञा के अनेक फल हैं, उनमें से एक फल प्रगृह्यसंज्ञा भी है।The nipāta-saṁjñā has many fruits, and among them one fruit is also the pragṛhya-saṁjñā.
